The ability to use words, the tools of communication, to express ideas with accuracy and effectiveness is a skill which must be constantly emphasized and care- fully cultivated. Eastern's English Depart- ment, under the capable leadership of Miss Miriam E. Deem, is ever alert to each stu- dent's problems and talents in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listen- ing. It is this department which teaches the skills required of all students in all sub- jects, also, iournalism, creative writing, and speed reading are oltered to some iuniors.

The past and present are brought together so that the students can see relationships in the long stream of history's events. Careful attention is given daily in Modern World History, in U.S. History, and in Modern Problems classes to the evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of many kinds of materials.
