Quit old men Dear Girls of '63, The wisdom used in the selection of your class motto-knowledge and courage are elements of greatness-indicates that from the beginning of your association with Eastern you have been aware ofthe two most important characteristics that an individual can possess. Although knowledge and courage have always played a significant role in the drama of human life, their value is increased by the speed and complexity of the twentieth century. There is so much to know! The finite mind of man cannot contain or recall all the ideas which are easily ovailableg there are other concepts which lie entirely outside the realm of human comprehension. Man's recognition that he can never know all things is in itself, knowledge. Knowledge without courage is useless, for one must be willing to challenge those who evade, oppose, or scoff at the truth. Courage takes many forms, and sometimes the individual finds that his hardest task is to make an independent decision, to stand alone behind his convictions, or to emerge from personal defeat or disappointment without cynicism. It is my hope that each of you will discover that Eastern has contributed to your knowledge of yourself and the world about you, that you will be filled with a desire to continue to learn, and that you will have the courage to defend the truth.
