History The roots of the prese are deep in the past. The History Department, under the direction of Miss Mary Parker, helps Eastern girls to appreciate the rich herit- age that has come down to them, and to become better citizens by furthering their knowledge 'of city, state, na- tional, and world affairs. The courses offered by the depart- ment now include Modern World History, United States History, Modern Problems, and the college survey, West- ern Civilizations. To supple- ment the regular study pat- terns, the department spon- sors field trips, film strips, youth councils, panel discus- sions, and public address pro- grams commemorating holi- days and important historical occasions.

English Department Without the basic skills of English, it is impossible to in- telligently pursue other fields of learning. Therefore, a sound foundation in grantmar and literature is built by Eastern's English Depart- ment. Study programs cover basic grammar skills and de- velopment of ideas through writing, public speaking, and reading both classical and modern literature. More spe- cialized classes include crea- tive writing, journalism, speed reading, and a college. course in English literature. With her excellent background in Eng- lish, an Eastern girl can enter either college or a career with full confidence in her ability to express her ideas, and to comprehend and appreciate those of others. Miss Miriam Deem is department head.

Home Economics The Home Economics Department of Eastern, under the leadership of Miss Dorothy Ordwein, offers an ex- cellent preparatory course to girls in- terested in home-making careers. Cook- ing, sewing, housekeeping, child care, and the social graces are all part of the curriculum, for a good home-maker is a versatile one, a fact that Eastern's home economics teachers recognize and keep in mind while planning the courses of instruction. A home economics stu- dent has the opportunity of working in the fine cooking and sewing rooms and the fully furnished apartment, which are all located on the third floor, thus she receives valuable practical experi- ence in all three divisions of the course ffoods, clothing, and home-makingj while she is still in school. Seated: Miss Ordwein, Miss Burton, Mrs. Herzberg. Standing: Mrs. Sorrells, Mrs. Roten. 'S il!-J ,pf
