Keep your eye on the ball! Phys ical Educ ation Department Refereeing an inter-squad basketball game, instructing a group of would-be swimmers at Mervo pool, and locating the owners of or- phaned gym suits are all in a day's work for the members of Eastern's Physical Education Depart- ment. Since physical training is a vital part of the curriculum, Miss Alice White and her staff strive to meet the needs of every student in the development of personal fitness and co- ordination. For girls who are interested, the de- partment offers a variety of extracurricular sports. Climaxing the intramural program is the selection of varsity teams for interscholastic com- petition. One, two, three, sing! is the familiar signal to which Eastern girls in music groups respond. Appreciation of good music, both vocal and in- strumental, is part of the many-sided instructional program undertaken by Mrs. Masson and her staff. Enthusiasm for music shows itself in the assembly programs and in the popularity of spe- cial concerts. Besides the general course for all students, the music maior course and the music curriculum program afford to students with special musical interests more extensive training and study. These groups are evidence of the success of the staff in developing musical talent.

'Qi137l Science Department The barking explosion of hydrogen gas, the colorful diffusion of the spectrum, or the pungent aroma of formaldihyde indicates that another Eastern student by way of her senses has dis- covered more about the mysterious world of science. Working with Miss Helen Lentz, the physics, chemistry, and biology teachers instruct the girls in the living world around them and its composition. Dissecting a frog, preparing strange tuming concoctions, and producing simulated sun- sets allow the girls to discover facts through ex- perimentation. ln addition to classroom studies, Eastern girls read in special fields, engage in science club activities, and through individual re- search seek answers for life in the space age. lf at first you don't succeed, . . 27
