Language Department The Foreign Language Department, headed by Dr. Gladys Dorsey, is an interesting part of the academic curriculum at Eastern High School. A variety of foreign languages is offered, including French, Spanish, German, and Latin. The Julius Hoffman Memorial prize is awarded to the outstanding German student, and a medal is also given to a worthy Spanish student. The best French scholar is awarded a medal of honor at graduation. Eastern's Foreign Language Department holds several social functions during the year, at times inviting other schools to participate. Among these affairs is the St. Catherine's Day Festival, where girls show their clever imagination and artistic touch by wearing extravagant hats that they have made. The subjects that are offered by this department include general mathematics, plane and solid geometry, intermediate and advanced algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and analytical geometry. The Mathematics Department also helps juniors and seniors to review math for college board examinations. These reviews are greatly appreciated by the students as many of them do not take math in their junior or senior years.
