Deem as head, strives to instil in the students some basic skills vital to the complicated life of today. The department has two very important aims. The first is to prepare students for col- lege. This is done by developing a thorough mastery of the fundamentals of composition, reading, and speaking. Students are given the opportunity to express themselves in both'crea- tive and formal writing. They also learn to ap- preciate literary classics and the works of great modern authors. The second aim is to prepare girls who are planning careers immediately after graduation. These girls are taught correct us- age, reading skills, literature appreciation, and clear, effective writing and speaking. The Eng- lish Department takes its place as one of the most important departments at Eastern.
