A PORTRAIT UF FATHER Dear old Dad! I really don't blame him for sprawl- ing in his armchair, snoring quite loudly, for I guess he really has had a hard day. Sure, Mother and I pressed and put on our dresses, but who zipped zip- pers, snapped snaps, and buttoned buttons? Why, dear old Dad, of course! Then too, no one would question that Mother put the dinner on before she left for church, but who rushed down to turn off the rapidly-boiling lima-beans, and, while he was down- stairs, washed the breakfast dishes and gathered to- gether the Sunday papers? Who called the dog in and 'put her down the cellar because we were afraid that she would leave hair on my skirt oi drool on Mother's dress? Naturally, dear old Dad! t 'f course, Mother, supposedly, does all the church work, and so, while she was working, Dad, merely to while away the time, delivered envelopes, counted money, and dropped a few helpful hints on how to build the new church. Surely it was no strain for ufather dear to sit through the church service listening to my oli- key singing, and my subtle hints of going to a double- header later on in the afternoon, and afterwards to listen to me hum my rendition of Take me out to the Ball Game? all the way home in the car. Besides all this, who, taking my hint about going to see the Orioles play, helped get the lunch dishes together and thus got stuck with the menial task of taking out the garbage? Yes indeed, dear old Dad. And who paid for the tickets to the ball game, and treated me to an orange crush during the tenth inning of the first game? fWhoops, my mistake, I did.J But who has forgotten to give me my change? Certainly, Daddy dear. And who, after sitting through four hours of baseball, sun, and me, has a better right to come home and go to sleep in his easy chair? And who, even now, is squinting to read the funnies because I am sitting in the only chair with a good light and Mother is stretched out on the couch? Three guesses. But who wouldn't I trade for all the money in the world? You've guessed it. Dear old Dad!! P.S.-Father, after hearing this heart-warming, true- to-life Cso he saysl story, gave me back the 32.50 I spent at the ball game. fWhich I knew he would have done anyhoW.J A not so dear daughter, Pat fAtenl
