Warren Knighf, Ieff half back, made a successful 60-yard run offer Elberf Richmond had plunged over from the seven yard line fo fie the score af six all. From fhere on, 'lhe Tribe employed some fancy foofball in winning fheir firsl' game. Thus, fhe old oaken buckef, symbol of fhe rivalry befween Easfern and Soufheasfern, remains on fhe oIe reservafion for af leasf anofher year. Warren Knighf and Frank Vesperini made All Ci?y and also received honorable menfion for AIl Sfaie. BOYS' TRACK A5 fhis book is being made ready fo go fo press, we see fhe boys' frack feam in fheir workoufs. The feam, under ihe leadership of Coach Donnelly, works auf daily in fhe gym. A large number of aspiranfs have furned ouf, making if easier for Coach Donnelly fo develop a ine feam. Good luck gang! BASKETBALL Easfern's quinfef won only fwo baskefball games fhis year, slapping Denby 36-26 and 'lrouncing Redford QL-29. The Tribe's oufsfanding player was Larry Colfer. Phil Gallo, a guard, was fap scorer. There are many pros- pecfs in fhe reserve ranks fhaf should bolsfer fhe squad nexf season. BASEBALL Easfern's baseball feam should be greafly improved over lasf year's nine. There are many refurning leffermen, along wifh some recruifs, who should make fhis year's feam a confender for fhe mefro league crown. The Tribe suffered a blow wifh fhe loss of Arf Derrick, oufsfanding pifcher and a member of lasf year's All-Cify feam, fhrough gradualion in January. However. Coach Erwin may come up wifh anofher oufsfanding player who can fill Arf's big shoes. BOYS' SWIMMING Easfern's wafer boys look fo a beffer season fhis year fhan fhe previous year. Wifh such sfars as Bob Rigby, Dick Scheufler. Louis Schneider, and Herman Van Baak. refurning, the Braves should prove sfiff compefifion for fheir opposifion. One of the boys, Louis Schneider, may furn up on fhe All Cify feam. Look fo fhe Braves fo pull some surprises fhis year. GIRLS' SWIMMING Easfern's Mermaids, under fhe direcfion of Miss Marfin and Miss Miller, are looking forward fo o good season. Many of fhe girls are back and should provide some fhrills in fheir meefs. Unless fhings go wrong, they should be righl' up fhere wifh fhe ofher schools. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Easfern's Squaws, alfhough showing feam spiril and lighf, wrapped up an unsuccessful baskefball season by losing fo Denby 27-14. Alfhough fhe girls did nal win a game, fhey played like sporfsmen all fhe way. We hope fha? nexf season fhe girls find fhe range of fhe baskefs and prove fhaf fhey are serious confenders for fhe championship. 35 9? f 6 I tg 5 1 F Q ' 7 J Q xi -+,'5f'f f QEFW ., wa 5.9 -Hwy--1 wwf ' mi NN YW if , if' Eiggggfbvi E-w,f:'f -o . ENGLISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The English and Foreign Language Department, under the direction of Mr. Alden Kumler, has completed another suc- cessful year. In addition to doing very good work, students in this department have won many scholastic awards, including an All-American rating won by the Indian as the outstanding high school publication in the Scholastic Press Association of America. That students find their work very interesting, in spite of the tact that English is compulsory, is proved by their work on such plays as Macbeth, Journey's End, and R.U.R., and outstanding authors such as Dickens, Thackeray, Burns, Poe, Irving, Tarkington, and Shakespeare. Recently a scholastic contest was held by The Detroit News. Entries included short stories, book reviews, essays, poetry, and humor. Ten students from Eastern received key awards or honorable mention and their entries will be entered in the national contest. Each week, Radio Workshop, a program designed to help students keep up with the news about the school, is presented by the Radio Speech Class. There are also programs put on when we are having Red Cross and clothing drives, and also when we are celebrating such events as National Brotherhood Week. f-if 7 I 9 N 'ig' .
