The aim of fhe deparfmenf is nof only fo 'leach fhe sfudenf fo speak and wrife his language correcfly, buf also fo enable him fo have a wider, more com- prehensive view of fhe war fhrough fhe sfudy of confemporary liferafure and currenf evenfs. The fenfh grade classes read fhe pamphlef You Can Defend America, which confains fwelve lessons on building up a new defense in which every American should fake a parf. The booklef is an inspiring fribufe fo American ingenuify and enferprise. Elevenfh graders are keeping posfed on fhe world af war by reading and discussing confemporary magazines and essays. In fhe classes, fhe building up of morale and fhe sympafhefic undersfanding of fhe world's problems are fhe aims. Twenfy Modern Americans is one of fhe books being used in fhe fwelffh grade. lf is a collecfion of fhe biographies of fwenfiefh-cenfury Americans who have added much fo fhe culfure of our counfry. The life sfories of Richard Byrd, J. Edgar Hoover, George Washingfon Carver, Amelia Earharf, Will Rogers, Pearl Buck, and ofher equally famous Americans give a frue cross-secfion of life in America fo fhe sfudenfs. The book Thus Be H Ever, used also in senior classes, confains sfories and poems depicfing fhe six phases of our presenf world condifion. If helps fo answer, fhrough fhe besf confemporary aufhors, sfudenfs' quesfions of why, whaf, and how we are fighfing. ln addifion fo fhe regular classes, fhe English Deparfmenf has several exfra-curricular acfivifies which are also on a war program. The Round Table Discussion Club has presenfed many fopics of vifal inferesf fo every sfudenf who desires fo be a well informed American. The Speakers' Bureau is in keeping wifh fhe fimes by incorporafing in ifs program of speeches such fopics as Helping Uncle Sam , Blood Donors , Pan-Americanism , War Heroes , and Refugees . The Radio Guild, always willing and able, has been called on from fime fo fime fo give broadcasfs. The members fhem- selves casf, produce, and direcf fheir programs, fhus giving valuable experi- ence fo fhose who desire fo furfher fheir knowledge of radio. Anofher group of Easfern sfudenfs who are oufsfanding for fheir confri- bufion fo fhe school is fhe Pierian Club. Easfern's poefry group has used many phases of fhe war as inspirafion for fine work. Under fhe direcfion of Miss Whife, fhe Pierians have complefed anofher successful year. Many advanced English sfudenfs enfered fhe cify-wide English confesfs. The Women's Auxiliary of fhe V. F. W. sponsored an essay confesf again fhis year. The fopic was Unifed We Win. The aim of fhe confesf was fo increase fhe pafriofic spirif of American youfh and fheir knowledge of con- femporary problems. Allan Balfer and Don Wines placed well in fhe dis- fricf confesf of fhe Michigan Exfemporaneous Group, and Dempsey Prappas enfered fhe Thomas Jefferson Oraforical Confesf. Twenfy-eighf

RADIO GUILD One of fhe very acrive organizalions a+ Easrern is fhe Radio Guild. Under +he guidance of Mr. Harold Rowley, fhe Guild produces all of fhe programs +ransmi'Hed over +he school public address sysrem, including +he popular Indian of fhe Air. The Radio Guild is governed by irs elecfed presidenf, vice-presidenr, and secreraryg Mary Cecil, Mariorie Lang, and Roberr Ralph: and all programs are under fhe managemenf of srudenf producers and direcfors. Various roles are porlrayed by sfudenrs specializing in characfer parfs, sound effecfs, or announcing. The Guild has a sranding membership of over forry sfudenfs on ready call for any assignment Some of rhe mosf acrive players are Mariorie Lang, Mary Cecil, Berry Ann Wolf, and Roberr Ralph. The Guild has provided 'the school wi+h many pleasanf diversions, ofren during record period. I+ has presenfed a variery of programs, from mysfery fo comedy, as well as programs in which Mr. Powels 'rallied fo 'rhe sfudenf body. The Guild has been firmly behind every school campaign wifh a suirable program. The Radio Guild is indeed one of Eas'l'ern's mosf progressive sfudenr organizafions, srressing good radio fechnique and providing enrerrainmeni for all.
