The Eastern High School Mixed Chorus at rhe fall concert. FALL CONCERT An oulslanding success was +he verdicl on +he fall concerf, which was presenled on November 24 and 25. The lhree soloisls, Emile Simonel, Donald Hosfeller, and Shirleyan Cook, were lhe highlighls of +he occasion. Shirleyan played Lisz+'s Rhapsody No. ll like a professional, encoring wifh Valse Op. 64 by Chopin bolh nighrs. Don sang fhe Pilgrim's Song by Tschaikowsky, offering as an encore Wil'houl' a Song by Youmans. Emile performed 'rhe lirsl' movemenl' of Rieding's Concer+ino in D and Play Fiddle Play by Deufsch, lhe laHer being his encore on bolh nighls. Needless ro say all rhree were applauded long and enfhusiaslically. The mixed chorus opened fhe concerf wi+h Klemm's Lei There Be Song , arranged by Mr. Apfekar. The Girls' Glee Club presenled Nighl' Song by Clokeyg The Gay Ranchero by Hopping GrefchaninoFl's On lhe S'l'eppe g and Take Joy Home by Basset The orcheslra, under Mr. Paul Weiland's clirecfion, did a fine job of inferpreling lhe Lyric Overlure by Taylor and +he Bouree from Bach's Second Violin Sonala. Song of fhe Open Road by Malo'H'e was sung by lhe Boys' Glee Club. The boys also sang Friendship by Haesche and lhe much-beloved arrange- menl of Malol le's The Lord's Prayer , in which Clyde Weber's solo voice was very e'FFecl'ive. l Am fhe Wind by Dawson, Madam JeanneHe and Sing, Heigh-Ho , by Murray and McKay respecfively, were sung by l'he choir. The finale was Ode fo America by Cain, performed by 'rhe chorus and orcheslra combined. Miss Grace Jones, Mr. Paul Weiland, Mr. Millon Aplekar, and Miss Lois Dearing deserve much praise for l'he excellenl' performance. T enfy-four

?7 MUSIC Under fhe direclion of Miss Grace Jones, Eas+ern's music depar+men+ has faken a viral pari' in our war acfivify here a+ school by reaching fhe songs and music of our own counfry, our Allies, and our Lafin American neighbors. Perhaps fhe musicians 'irained af Easfern will some day enierfain our soldiers ai' U.S.O. organizaiions, can+eens, or clubs. Music liffs 'ihe hearfs and spirifs of war-+orn counfries, eases +he ragged edges of war nerves, and fakes us in+o a world of lovely melody and song. For fhese reasons, music will always enioy a high place in any school cur- riculum. Even wi+h fhe war program, however, +he music deparfmeni' has noi neglecfed i+s fradifional concer+s nor 'lhe singing of 'I'he familiar carols ai' Chrisimas fime, +o which all Eas+erni+es look forward as one of +he mos+ impressive and beaufiful 'iradifions of our school. The band, in fheir snappy uniforms, added a gay nofe +o +he foofball season wifh rendi+ions of 'ihe game's +radi+ional pieces and fhe ever-preseni corps of preffy drum maiorefies s+ruH'ing dramaiically a+ +he head. The orchesfra performed well a+ +he senior plays and +he concerfs, and should be commended especially for i+s fine music a+ +he commencemeni' exercises. All ihe vocal classes, fhough less well known +han +he special groups, are fraining sfudenis' voices and are fruly adhering +o +he moH'o, Keep America Singing . The value of music during war fime cannoi' be over- looked, and our music deparfmeni' is doing an especially fine job af fhis fime.
