PHYSICAL FITNESS The fheory fhaf hisfory repeafs ifself was sfrengfhened fhis year as fhe January semesfer saw fhe revival of fhe physical fifness program which was so popular in World War I. During fhaf war if became apparenf fhaf physical educafion would have fo be sfressed in fhe schools in order fo condifion 'Ihe boys for dufy in fhe armed services upon graduafion. Wi+h women now doing a fair share of winning fhe war, girls are now also included in fhis course. The purpose of Ihe physical fifness program foday is fo prepare high school sfudenfs for greafer service in fhe war efforf. Because of fhe greaf demand for fhe course and limifed gymnasfic facilifies, fhe sfudenfs are grouped info fhree unifs, one sfaying in fhe gym, anofher going fo fhe pool, and a fhird faking firsf aid. The course has been made as inferesfing as possible fhrough consfanf variafion of acfivifies. No day can be classed as fypical, because differenf exercises are done each day. However, all workoufs include calisfhenics, some of which are being led by sfudenfs. The exercises are such fhaf no parf of fhe body is leff idle. The aim is fo have all parfs of fhe body become, fhrough consfanf use, a perfecfly coordinafing unif. For boys, calisfhenics are usually followed by ever-varying relays, of which fhe obsfacle race is probably fhe mosf sfrenuous. Every imaginable obsfrucfion is used. Parallel bars are rigged fo resemble walls, and hurdles are placed fo form a funnel. Ropes are climbed, walls scaled, and hurdles iumped. Af fhe end of fhis fype of race fhe sfudenf may wonder whefher fhe course was designed fo make or break him. In place of fhe more rigorous relays, fhe girls have baskefball or ofher games. Nexf follow many acfivifies for fhe boys. Ju-iifsu, wresfling, frack, and boxing are faughf by falenfed, fime-sacrificing sfudenfs known as fhe Leader Corps. Running on fhe frack or free-for-all games, followed by a welcome, refreshing shower, may end fhe day's workouf. The sfudenf is faughf nof only how fo develop his body, buf how fo repair if. The firsf aid course is ouflined by +he American Red Cross and prepares one for any emergency which may arise. Hygiene, nufrifion, and safefy are also sfudied. The knowledge accumulafed in fhis course will be of benefif fo fhe boys and girls in war or peace. Skills of value fo fhe person on shipboard are faughf in fhe swimming pool. Breasf, side, and back sfrokes are sfressed, along wifh underwafer swimming. Because fhe back is profecfed by fhe skelefal sfrucfure while fhe abdomen and sfomach are no'r, sfudenfs are insfrucfed fo swim on fheir backs if in fhe wafer during fhe firing of depfh charges. How fo leap from a ship deck fo fhe wafer wifhouf iniury, how fo swim fhrough burning oil in groups and come oul' unsinged, surface diving-all are included in fhe all-ouf efforf fo prepare American youfh for fhe iob ahead. In a course of such varied acfivifies, one remains inferesfed fhroughouf, besides benelifing by fhe building of physical sfamina. Thirfeen
