A laughing hoard came running out To greet the sun with hearty shout. Today they knew they'd travel on And must their caps of knowledge don, For they to greater heights would go And would their force and spirit show. Yet as they neared the place of Fate, They called to mind the Cam'lot gate, Where great King Arthur once had schooled His Knights by kindness to be ruled. And then they thought as had each Knight, CAll filled with wonder and with frightD Of what before them there would lie, And of their motto- Do or Die! So spirited, they opened wide Their Cam'lot gate-and marched inside. Before them there where all could see, Stood Arthur's symbol- Victory. It promised them a future bright If all would work and do the right. And there were trophies and the lore Of those who had been there before. A great bell rang and they were led To halls aboveg and, at their head Were three good Knights and Ladies three, Who were their future friends to be. -To help them with each trial and test -To help them do their very best. lnstructed then, they went to find The Holy Grail-an only kind. Twenty-five THE 1936 ARROW Twenty-six CLASS HISTORY 1 Continued w But in this search, a few would stop, And thus they'd fail to reach the top. Yet others swore they would not fail To search right on and find the Grail For it was Knowledge, and to sup Made greatest treasure of this cup. And when they'd found the long-sought cup They knew they'd never give it up. But still they'd share its precious drink With others who would learn to think. But very soon there came the day When Joy was King-all swords away! Instead the searchers each were knighted, -Blessings given-all wrongs righted. So thus prepared to leave the Hall, They met together for a ball, And there they feasted, danced and sang, And loud the hall with laughter rang. They talked of former games and balls, Of victories and even falls. Then there sounded to each ear A mighty note from bells so clear, Which signified the feast was o'erg They all must leave and close the door On former life. The future bright Was theirs for asking-their own right, To do with it as each saw fit, While paths with Knowledge would be lit. Not that these girls look as if they just got off the Mayflower, no sir, nothing old- fashioned about these gals. The nearest we have to a demure little Puritan maiden is Ruth Schaffnit. Her quiet and pleasant personality is liked by all of her followers. As the president of the house, she, with all her quietness, rules the girls with a steady hand. A decidely noticeable opposite of Ruth is the Cleopatra of the house, Harriet Chace. Harriet always sees the funny side of life and can toss wise cracks from side to side with a flirty glance. She also leads the cheering at many gatherings and can arouse school spirit to a high pitch. Clara Doura, a cute little lower classman, has won the friendshi of many girls with her ready wit andp friendly ways. One of her many pals is Ruth CRufieD Bernhardt, a giggling Miss with a mischievious look. She can go forth into peals of laughter over anything the least bit humorous and often starts Clara into hysterics. Pleasingly plump Dot Kokx is one of those girls with big blue eyes and dainty bows on each side of her head. Dorothy takes the world as it comes and never seems to frown at anything. Marjorie Boyer with her red hair and sprinkling of freckles is a girl of beauty and joy orever. Gentlemen may pre- fer blondes, but many weaken when Marjorie comes along, and most parti- cularly, when she is with the delectable Nanette Muir, who is like a China doll. Her black locks and ivory complexion remind one of a magazine picture. Miss Nanette is the languid type with a slow gliding model's step. Pigtails, fantastic fashions, and an ideal comedienne-Joan Thibault is re- cognized by all these traits. Her hil- arious color-combinations would make any dress designer sit up and take notice. She's just a big little squaw among all the big Chiefs. Phyllis Colquitt with her husky voice is an ideal blues-singer, but her complete girlishness takes away that torch singer look. A good friend of hers is Joan Watkins. Although she rarely smiles, when she does, it is a treat. A bonny Scotch lassie, Pearl Still, is always seen with a perky grin on her face. Her musical talents are restricted to the boys' quartette only-and they oblige by seranading her to her heart's content. Another lass from the British Isles is Betty McCullough with her Irish brogue. Black hair and a blos- soming rose complexion plus freckles make Betty a pleasing sight for sore eyes. Ann Elizabeth Jonas is that curly haired minx who holds down the office of secretary in her house. But even with her heavy responsibilities she still finds time to go walking with two or three popular Romeos. Elsie Neeriemer des ite her spicey gossiping wins the affbction of both boys and girls. She isn't the wise- cracking type, but she has a keen sense of humor and always enjoys other peoples cracks. That well-known young lady, Anna Jane Cole, has a most delightful habit of sketching caricatures of unsuspecting culprits. The sketchs are masterpieces, even though the models don't think so. Tap, tap, tap,-Betty Jane Lamont, the nevvsboy tap dancer, is tapping her way into the hearts of many friends. As a paper boy Betty would drive any competitor out of business. We also have a dramatic star in our midst. Betty Blaske with her Oxford dialect, alpologetic air, and her charm- ing simp icity is acclaimed the girl, just like the girl who married dear old Dad. A rhythmic youngster, Margaret McGrain, is a snappy music maker. She can toot on the flute and play the piano with ease. Tall and stately like a queen, Thelma Muhly reigns among the honor students. Rising with the chickens is a habit of Thelma's, especially when she expects to have a test, but it has evidently been worth it. And so we could go on telling about Priscillas and more Priscillas, but time and space will not permit. Suffice it to close this year wit the most popular Priscilla, Miss E. Mae Browne, whom all the girls adore. Fifty ji1 e THE 1936 ARR OW Fifly-Six Tl-IE HGUSE OFFICERS OF ROOSEVELT MR. WARREN J. FRYE, house principal, has been an able guide to the boys of Roosevelt. They take the knocks of life with a coura eous smile, and Mr. Warrenj. Frye ridges along with his boys and takes all the bumps with them. One of the best known Rough Riders is Augie Bergamo, who pitches a base- ball with plenty of mean stuff behind it. His size belies his strength, but on the diamond his power is much in evidence. Track star and all around runner is Jack Pflanz. His blonde head goes round the track at a terrific pace, while another blonde Cfemininej head always watches him from the side lines. A cheerful little fellow is Frank Isca. He is a little man but has enough good humor for someone twice his size. He proved an able assistant to Mr. Frye as secretary of the house. He also carried out the duties of the student manager of the hockey team last year. When Anthony Guciardo fixes one of his iron stares, the toughest hombre will soon ask for forgiveness. But when all his loud clamor has waned and he grudingly allows himself a smile-why, then we know he is real and not just a cold statue. Music of his own making pleases Jack Davis, booming crooner. He is one-fourth of the boys' quartette and carries his part with a flourish. When girls stop to speak to Ivan Lodin, he blushes furiously, stutters profusely, and nervously tears a hand- erchief-WhyP Because he was elected the most bashful boy in thejanuary class. Not only do sportsters hail from Roosevelt, but even boys like Edward Frazier and Frank Raiford. Both are members of the Chiefs. Bill Edwards causes many feminine newcomers to look twice when they see him strolling along. The girls like him and the boys also find him a good sport and a real pal. Swimming is his favorite sport and most accomplished pastime. Loud clicking heels and a booming bass voice characterize Welby Kramer as he comes storming down the hall. He pretends to be a most severe disci- plinarian, but his commands are not always obeyed. Whenever one sees a bobbing male surrounded by a circle of attractive girls, it is Edward Herring, a veritable Don Juan. Robert Dewsbury spent much time on the ice with the hockey team a year ago. A pal of his who received many tumbles is the pig-skin carrier, James McManus. With a smudge of mud on his chin and an attractive black eye sleeved from playing, James can still smile. Bill Hoff, sports writer extra-ordi- nary, has acquired the terrific speed of five words an hour. Salsinger will probably be out of a job after Bill is graduated. He also has the reputation of being able to take the most razzing without ever losing his temper. Joseph Pacey, one of our handsome track stars, ran himself right into the class presidency with his inimitable friendly s irit. He makes many oor jokesters fdel good because he laugiis at anything. A heap big Chief, honor officer, and an official money atherer is Frank Monacelli. No neef to worry, he will see to it that the senior bills will all be paid. James Curry and David Tyo are two good swimmers. Both boys are hand- some King Neptunes in their own tall and short ways. Dave is a diver and James is a free styler. It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things, and boys of Roosevelt have won these honors because they believe in what Theodore Roosevelt said. Under the enthusiastic lead- ership of their respected guide, Uncle George Waterbury, the boys are taught the essentials of sportsmanship. Their pet mascot, Nickel-me-up is the boys' pal. No sum is too much for the boys of Webster to raise because there is always some one ready to part with a nickel to watch the monkey do his tricks. In a saucy suit of orange and black, Richard Ruppel toots along with thc school band, without his melodious toot the band would be in great dis- tress. Once he aspired to the position of sport editor of the Indian but recently has given his attention to the Chiefs and the House. The big shot of the Chiefs, Raymond Uhlig is quite a great personage, for he copped one of the six senior offices. His master mind is capable of everything but humor. A true gentleman is Don Hummel, who is a tennis enthusiast. As a haughty model in the Follies, he displayed al- most professional poise. On the frosty glistening ice, Lloyd Parr outshines all others, having won many honors and awards. When not making music on the ice, he sings with the Boys' Glee Club. Mariano Zito possesses a striking resemblance to Ned Sparks, although he does not follow the stage and screen. Mariano is quite a sportsman and is on several teams, but his outstanding in- terest is basketball in which he is a recognized star. The Apollo of the house, Bill Kirby, is a popular football player. In the Follies he was almost a show in him- self, posing as the dying Gaul, the archer, shotputter, boxer, and thinker. Baseball, football, track, and hockey are among the varied interests in Ed- ward Bahnke's life, and he has an en- thusiastic following. Many who are quite ignorant of the rules are said to enjoy seeing him play. Another sport participant is Louis Sage of the football, hockey, and base- ball squads. Because of his sportsman- ship and ability he was elected president of the house. He requires law and order under his rule. A complete lady's man is Jerry Kogel- schatz. He never seems to have a worry and is always heard loudly booming a melody. Bob Pine is on the tennis team, and it is said he hits the tennis ball so hard it whistles with speed. His bobbing curls and frilly frock made a hit in the Follies. The funny side of life is seen by Jay Smith, and he swaggers about with a big grin on his face. One never sees a blue Jay around these parts. He is usually interested in one girl at a time and is her constant companion. Harold Zimmerman is a gay, young music maker who spends his spare time to good advantage. If he can't be found Stringing along with the orchestra, he'll surely be found in some swimming pool splashing about. With his violin he will gain much fame and may perhaps be another Rubinoff. - Bill Martin has won his great fame for loudly warbling in the halls. His club sweater, which he won as a member of the football team is always in evidence. Many boys of Webster are leaders in the making, and we'll hear more from them next year. So with Nickel-me- up as a proud mascot, the Webster gang and Uncle George go merrily on. Fifly nme -T H ,, . I -I, , , A K1 ,I ,Q J, n ggi . Some people seem to think that all honor students are dull. They would soon change their minds, however, if they knew Georgina Larsen, the girl who hails from Florida. George is an enthusiastic sportswoman, and she always roots for the winning team unless her own hometown is fplaying. Chemical terms are rambled 0 by her with complete understanding, and she always is ready to tell you all about them. Sophisticated Caye Newton is a lov- able belle hailing from Kaintucky with a pleasing lazy drawl. Caye has a keen sense of humor and a grand personality, which enabled her to make a hit in the senior play. Another gal from way down souf is Mary johnson. She will be a prominent lea er by the time she is a senior. Giggling, giggling, and more gig- gling, will always remind us of Shirley Lane. Shirley peals forth with gay laughter at every opportunity and usually causes the crowd to either laugh with her or at her. Ruth Bremer, a little lady with high ideals, was a valuable aid to the Chiefs. Her ability to get along with other people was also one of the reasons for her being elected secretary of the senior class of january. A haughty stare-but not a haughty manner describes Charlotte Biske. She is famed for her perfume, which has such an elegant fragrance-it just kinda gets you. Sports are his major interest, and when not in classes, he can usually be found in the gym- nasium. A future Harvard freshman is Bob Urquhart. His scholastic record made him valedictorian of the January class. Those two enormous, gigantic Balls, Austin and Charles, can never have anything put over on them-they can see too much. Charlie, a very chival- rous young man is every girl's darling, but Austin confines his interest to school activities only. When not performing his duties as president of the house, he takes lengthy strides around the track. The lad who always makes you want to snap your fingers and dance around a bit is Eugene Fenby. He even has a musical look in his eye. Along with his music makers he should have Barton Sellon, the erfect stooge. His loud applause ancf, inimitable frog voice would certainly add to Fenby's growing popularity. Bob Guy, officer in the 'january class, the guy with the sporty air, is the friend of all girls and the pal to all of the boys. Teachers found him very helpful, and he particularly enjoyed having them reward him at card marking time. Good lookin Harold Kuhagen is not the least bit dead , even though his father is an undertaker, although he is a deadly shot on the basketball court. His constant teasing and ready laugh are sure signs of good humor and life. A tall lad is Neil Meyer, who has a flair for Shakespeare recitations. Quite a contrast to his Shakespearian role was his janitor part in the January play. Another poetic soul is Arnold Rose, the hit in two senior plays. His talents are many, dancing, writing, drawing, singing, and playing. He should be able to make his mark in the world. The boy with the mischieveous atti- tude is Bob Sosnowski, the imp. His pranks are remembered throughout the school, especially those he plays in chemistry ab. Collectin hairpins is the hobby of Marvin Nogz. He needs them to keep his hair out of his eyes, while he is dancing, because like the girls, after shampooing his hair, he can't do a thing with it. Donald E. Smith, the great GD orator, also is a Lincoln man. His argumentative nature and dictatorial attitude make all innocent bystanders cringe. Don will obligingly change his opinion just to be able to argue with someone, Benson Ginsburg being his favorite opponent. After a long session Benson usually sits down and writes an editorial filled with long unintelli- gable words for the Indian. John Shober is one who has never been caught off the honor roll. Radio building furnishes him his diversion, while John Hippen gets his by teasing and tormenting the girls. As R.O.T.C. sergeant, he makes the private walk the chalk line. The 12A honor officer of Lincoln is Robert Shoemaker. When not study- ing he may be found playing basket- ball. His friendly spirit has won him many friends. The question is whether Shortnin' Bread is bringing fame to Elmer Witzke, or he is bringing fame to Shortenin' Bread! But not only in music has he made a name, but in athletics as well, having been a valuable man on both the baseball and baketball teams. The spirit in this house is one for all and all or one, and as long as this lasts, Lincoln will ever be in the lead. S ixly-lhree THE 1936 ARROW HOUSE OFFICERS OF DIANA KATHERINE ROBERTS, treasurer January to June MARGARET VIVIANO, president September to january ELIZABETH FRADER, president January to June MARGARET YOUNG, secretary January to June VICTORIA ZAHLOUTE, vice-pres January to June Q Miss IRENE DUFFY, house principal of Diana, has fostered a sense of responsibility and loyalty in the girls of her house through her gift of sympathetic understanding and leader- ship. Sixty-jour THE 1936 ARROW DIANA'S SATELLITES A Diana was a great huntress, and the girls of her house also inherit this trait. Some hunt for scholarships and others hunt for recognition in sports. The leader of these modern Dianas, Miss Irene Duffy, is a charming huntress, who is ever alert to give her girls a helping hand. One of the leading Dianas is Jennie MacDonald. She is popular with many clubbers and 12A ofiicers. But for all her vampish ways Jennie has a heart of gold, and is always aiding others in distress. If ever in need of aid and com- fort send Jennie an S.O.S. and she'll come a-running. Black-haired Margaret Viviano was elected the most popular girl in the house and the prettiest girl in the January class. As the house president she was most efficient and proved a very able assistant to Miss Duffy. Marjorie Rittenhaus, a charming huntress, was also a member of the January class. She was vice-president and received a high distinction diploma. A year ago the house carried away the basketball honors of the school, and the indominable spirit of Eleanor Semkow, was the main reason. Perhaps the most loyal supporter Eleanor had was Virginia Hannan, who never missed a game. The rah, rah, rahs, led by Goldie Kocsis, varsity cheer leader, kept enthusiasm running high. Snickering and a suppressed giggle- and then Audrey Schilroth usually ap- peared on the scene. As the leading lady in theJanuary senior play, she was tops . The shyest girl in the house, Eliza- beth Frader, held the highest office from January to June. She is a little mite, but oh, my! - Baby face-but what a face. Pretty Victoria Zahloute may be the baby of Diana, but she can wheedle many young men around her little linger just by her baby talk. Without her rubber Marion Stock- ing is a sorry young miss and looks like an April shower. No one is a better patron of Wrigley's than she. But Cora Emke, a peppy little swimmer, can usually cheer her. When Cora is not paddling in the water, she dashes around with a tingling laugh, her eyes twink- ling with pseudo-naughtiness. Quiet Mary Deming was only slightly known in the house until she was given the feminine lead in the January play. Since then the Whole school knows about the honors she captured. Better than a Swiss guard was Ada Henry on hall duty. No one, no matter how large or small, could get past her without a permit. Sometimes she was surprised with a slap on the back by Barbara Conklin, who is not a court jester or a circus clown, but only a Wee lass with a keen desire for fun. There is something interesting to say about all the girls, and with Diana as their challenging leader, they are sure to continue to win their share of laurels. EVERYBODY-A BIG LOCOMOTIVE In respect to the number of championships won, this last year was not so great a success as could be desired, but in respect to the real purpose of s orts, that of de- veloping sportsmanship, getting exercise to improve health, andp makin friends, the year was a very successful one. The Indian thinclads lost the city indgoor track crown, which they won last year, but the tank squad partly made up for that by capturing the East Side Swimming title. This year's baseball team seems to be continuing where last year's squad left off. Last year's team tied with Northeastern and Denby for the city title, and this seasor1's squad has an excellent chance to better that performance. They have already won three games, dropping only one decision this season. Miller, Cass, and Commerce were the teams turned back with defeats quite easily by scores of 8 to 1, 7 to 6, and 12 to 4 in order. The game lost was a fiercely fought struggle with Denby, who in the last inning managed to score three runs, defeating the Indians by the score of 3 to 1. This defeat, however, by no means eliminates them from the title chase, although it does make it a little more difiicult. Mr. Hugo Matson, outdoor track coach this year, is very optimistic regarding the Indians chances for the city championship which will be decided in June. All of the members of last season's indoor track team are back, and Coach Matson has discovered several more potential point getters. Joe Pacey, who used to run the mile and two mile events, is back again this season after having been out of competi- tion for almost a year. He has been changed, however, from the distance events to the half mile and is developing into an excellent half-miler. Jack Pflanz, who is the city 220 champion, has returned to the squad as has Earl Redmond, who won the high jump event in the last indoor track finals. Joe Pacey and Joe Kramer have been elected co-ca tains for this season. As this goes to press, the team has won the only meet heldithus far, defeating Denby by a 74 to 38 score. Surly ezqhi THE 1936 ARROW In tennis the boys are not doing so well. So far they have lost two dual contests, dropping one to Southeastern and the other to Hamtramck. Dual meets, however, are invitational and do not count in the city title race. The city meet will be held sometime in June, and all of the schools will participate in a round-robin series, one defeat eliminating a team. The members of the team in the order of their rank are as follows: Don Hummel, captain, Bob Pine, Bob Shoemaker, Leonard Brodowitz, Walter Layman, Dick French, John Hippen, Dave Pippen, and Ray Dahlka. Last fall head Coach Erwin began an innovation in an attempt to get more boys interested in track. He organized a tenth Cgrade track team composed only of tenth graders. Each boy's house had a team an these teams started a round-robin series and those boys who did the best in these meets were invited to try out for the team. This team only held one dual meet, that one with Denby, which they won decisi- vely. Several of these boys have won positions on the varsity squad, and are show- ing quite well according to Coach Matson. Besides being a star basketball and baseball player, Augie Bergamo can play a fine game of ping pong as he demonstrated in the News ping pong tournament last fall. Augie won the district held at Eastern by defeating Dave Tyo, a swimmer. Both of these boys were in the finals of this tournament and, both lost their first round matches. The swimming team was undefeated for the full season of dual meet competition on the East Side this last season, and consequently this gave them the East Side Swimming Cham ionship because they were the only team undefeated. In the city meet, however, the best the Indians could do was to take one second lace and one fourth. Bob Gardner, the Indians star diver, laced second to Bill Erinke in the fancy diving event. Bob Allard, a free styler and captain of the squad, placed fourth in one of the free style events. Northwestern won the city meet just about as they pleased as they did the year before. One of the scrappiest basketball teams the school has had in several years placed fourth on the East Side, but that does not tell the tale. Four games were won, one tied and two difficult struggles lost. Owing to their lighting spirit they were able to hold Southeastern, city title runnerup, to a 22 to 22 tie. Augie Bergamo was the high scorer of the squad with Ed Parry, captain, a close second. The Indian's football team had a very peculiar and unusual season for an Eastern team. Although the football team came close to winning two different times, they ended the season without a win. Up until the final quarter of the Hi hland Park game, the Indians were ahead by a 7 to 6 score, but about the middle ofg that period the Parkers commenced a steady attack at the Indian's line and finally they were able to push across another touchdown. The only other touchdown they scored was in the Southeastern game in which they were defeated by the score of 7 to 6. Anthony Guciardo was captain of the team. Dropping two dual meets, one to Southeastern and one to Hamtramck, the indoor track squad placed fifth in the city finals, losing the crown to Hamtramck. With the hel of Jack Pflanz, the captain, the squad won the city 220 and Earl Redmond the higlfz jump, which Bernard Lucas won last year. The golf team has not made a very impressive record so far, dropping their first match with Denby by a 13 to 4 score. They trimmed Hamtramck 9 to 3, and tied with Pershing 6 to 6. The members of the team are Charles Hansing, Art Krause, Ray Wancour, Charles Swartzenburg, Bob Binder, Ray Uhlig, and Norman Nash.
