WELCH LOSS One whom I know Has let me dwell For many years In a cabin In the midst of a clump of trees On land He owns. And one day that One Came and cut down One of the clump of trees And hauled it away For His own purposes. Could I but have told that One How much I missed The tree He took away lim sure He might have left it. -Edward Maclfarlarzd -++H K++- AND NOW WE FEEL YOUR NEED We seldom miss lhe fire's warmth until the embers die, We seldom miss the candle's flame until it llickers out --we The fire dies, the candle dies And then we feel their need. The lndians gained a victory over Mackenzie in their lirst garlic liy a score of 56 to l0. ln succeeding games they scored a 22 to 22 tie with Miller. lost to Northeastern hy a score ol' 30 to 26. and despite their sevcn point lead at the half. they accepted defeat at the hands of the .lungaleers to the tune ol .30 to lil. The line-up for this season was l,citha l.assitcr, captain. lilcanor Semkow. Sussalean llolicrts, forwards: Madeline Strcil, Mar faret lxraclit, Blanche Moon. guards. , ..-1.1.4 The high Joint scorer for the season was f lfleanor Semkow with Sl points to her credit. giving her an average of twelve points per game. Although the girls' swimming team was de- feated in both of its regular competitive meets this season. Emily Baker. captain. placed lirst in the diving event in the Northwestern meet. first in the 50-yard free style event. and Grace Panti- 0 ledes was second in diving in the latter meet. A third meet was held with Southeastern's team. but it was a splash party rather than a formal meet. Veteran swimmers on the team this year are Mary .lane Wasinund. Johanna Wlierek. Grace Pantiledes. Kathryn Mvll. Murice Hotter. Virginia Hotter. Virginia Holly, and Grace Pantiledes. This semester's golf team, coached by Mrs. Mildred Cheney. is composed of Josephine lhrTfg?l'. captain. Winning the east side championship for the first time in the history of the school. Coach I ltlfflt'-fll'tl Arthur Erwin's hockey team. eaptained by Joe llubino. Closed a very successful season. T-li team did not triumph in the play offs. They lost. to Central 2-0, and to Mackenzie 2-1. Joe Ruhino made the position of right wing on the all city team, because of his skating ability and hard shooting. Edward Bloom should re- ceive much of the credit for t.he successful season. His outstanding goaling won for him a position on the second all city team. Three members of Coach Arbaugh's track team were successful in placing in the city meet. These three were Bernard Lucas. who tied for first place in the high jump. Clarence Wright. who placed in hurdles, and Jesse Corona in shot-put. Each of these members had much to do with Eastern's success when Captain Dorsey Gary led his team to five victories out of six meets. As a result of these victories Eastern placed second on the East side. With the breaks against her. Eastern's basket- ball five, under Coach MacDougal, made a desperate stand for second place against North- ern and Hamtramck. Both of these games were remarkably close, Northern winning by only one point while Hamtramck won by two. A short time before these playolfs the team had defeated Eastern's old rival, Southeastern. Louis Crespi. captain this year and also cap- r , tain-elect for next year, won a position in the third all-cit.y team. Under the coaching ol' Hugo Matson and the leadership ol' Captain Robert Backolf, Eastern's swimming team won four of her seven meets Northwestern, Cooley, and Southeastern being the only teams who were able to defeat her. A build-up team of which only four members were letter winners in 1933, they made a very good showing. Next year Robert Schellig, the high point man of 1934 will lead a team of veterans from which much may be expected. Coach Erwin is spending a large part of his time training his prospect's for this year's base- ball team. Although up to this time the team has not been definitely selected, Coach Erwin is quite sure who will make the team. 'Frank Pantalone is captain. Robert Tracy and Faye Hawkins, pitchers. and Louis Crespi and Glen Newkirk. catchers. will probably form the battery. Joe Rubino. Jimmy Catone. George Tuschak. Paul Angott, Samuel lppolito, and Edward Bloom are on the first string. Most of these players were members of last year's team and should have an excellent season. Coach Matson is getting his spring tennis team in condition. He has five players who won letters last year. These are: Robert Miller. Roy Collins, Charles Flis, Werner Hamann, and William Coleman. In addition to these he will have George Sell. Howard Rieck, Arthur Vollrath. and John McElroy. With this team Mr. Matson has high hopes for this year. Mr. Fred Beddow. of the Physics department. who has always shown a keen interest in sports. is coaching the golf team. William Warren. Arthur Gingell. and Howard Miller have their places assured on this team. Besides these Mr. Beddow has Arthur Herschbach as a prospect. The team will play Hamtramck. Northeastern. Southeastern. Pershing, and Dcnby. They will play oll' the city tournament on May 5. Approximately ninety per cent of the boys in school participated in the intramural sports program. Arthur Vollrath managed these events and also managed the teams in the House of Roosevelt. Yale Mclntyre. of the House of Lincoln, and Samuel D'Angello, ol' Webster, were house managers. Boys of the House of Lincoln captured the intramural trophy by winning ten out of the twelve meets held. They piled up a total of 1155 points against the House of 1Ycbstcr's 910 and Roosevelt's 810. Lincoln placed first in tennis, basketball. golf. indoor track. bowling, handball, foul shooting. swimming. water polo. skating, and water relay carnival. Webster placed first in ping pong, and Roosevelt in touch football. For! y-I I1 ree ' Emi, ,.
