Look, she had even changed her name Trom Sarah To Sara. Didn'T iT look more-arisTocraTic-The new way? Oh, she was modern in a loT oT diTTerenT ways, Too. Une oT her peT schemes was whaT her Triends had nicknamed The SaTurday lVlaTinee lRelTreaT, Tor This was The Time when The gang oT girls wenT down To The Commodore Tor an early show, and aTTer ThaT, To Diamond's Tor a luscious banana spliT- wiTh plenTy oT whipped cream on Top, Too. NaTurally, Sara had To sneak ouT oT The house beTore her TaTher saw her. Sara used To say, Dad's iusT an old religious Tool. AcTs so silly abouT an old Tashioned Thing! Why! BuT Then, maybe old-Tashioned dad did suspecT someThing. l.asT week, when she had come in Trom The show wiTh a nonchalanT Lo, dad, The beseeching, paTheTic look he had given her had almosT done some- Thing To her. BuT only-almosT. ATTer all, religion was an old-Tashioned Thing, wasn'T iT? For old people, CK.-or in Europe . . . BuT l'm a modern American girl. Why boTher wiTh such an old Thing, anyway . . . So, you see, Sara was modern. The high holiday season was on and almosT over. Try as she did To resisT, some oT The spiriT was geTTing inTo Sara and she decided To do someThing abouT iT. So she and The girls made a plan To celebraTe- and To go on a liTTle spree To The Chink's around The corner and have a liTTle Tun- To celebraTe Yom Kippur, The mosT sacred oT all holy daysl l-lal l-la! ThaT's a good one-'sacred'-isn'T iT a scream? Some Tun . . . And oT course, RiTa,iT you drop a genTle hinT To your broTher To drop around wiTh The gang . . . iusT a genTle hinT mind you, well, we can have some Tun, huh! And so They wenT and had a good Time, so good, in TacT ThaT iT puT Sara in a good mood. So she said, Well, l may as well humor dad along and drop inTo The synagogue Tomorrow aTTernoon. lT's an old- Tashioned idea, buT I'II humor The old guy along. AT abouT halT pasT Tive The Tollowing day, Sara TipToed inTo The old, rickeTy synagogue. The place consisTed oT one big room. In The cenTer was The wooden pulpiT and all around ThaT were rows oT benches, upon which were siTTing men and boys. ln The back was a curTain, cuTTing oTT a secTion Tor The women. Sara sTood TlaT againsT The wall, Trying To caTch a glimpse oT her TaTher, To show him ThaT she had come, and as she waiTed, she waTched and saw. 9 AlThough The room was crowded, iT did noT appear so. On The plaTTorm were a Tew men reading aloud and The men were siTTing, slumped murmuring To Themselves, praying guieTly. The enTire aTmosphere was one oT guieT prayer, resTrained and subdued ouTwardly, buT ever anxious, pushing Trom The inside ouT. From The women's secTion came a sTeady low sobbing, guieT desperaTe prayer. The men also unashamedly wepT and prayed aloud. There was a spiriT oT humble men, humble yeT hope- Tul, despairing yeT anxious, eager, repenTing. And Sara sTood There, and ThaT spiriT oT humbleness swepT Through her. The lasT rays oT sun resTed in This guieT aTmosphere againsT The wall, blushed wiTh shame when caughT peeking inTo This eThereal scene. And, alThough wanTing To linger here, TelT humbled and crepT away. And Sara sTood s+iII. lT was nearing The end oT This TasT day. Time was growing shorT. SenTence was soon To be pronounced Tor The deTendanTs. And The whole congregaTion was praying as if iT were one voice. A surging wave Tlowed Trom The core oT each soul, ran over The cracks and ruTs oT each sobbing breasT. lT was The voice oT a guilTy deTendanT pleading To a Judge Tor mercy. And Sara sTood and her hearT prayed Too. And Then, The clear call oT The ShoTar, The ram's horn-The call oT The TaiThTul shepherd To his wandering sheep, calling, Taking Them back To The Told. The TasT was over, l.eshona haba biyarushalayumu-The cry oT a hungry people-hungry Tor mercy, hungry Tor Their land, and, more prac- Tically, hungry Tor Tood. And everyone was hurrying home. Sara hur- ried home, Too. The nexT morning, when Sara woke up, iT was raining, a good, clear, brisk rain. BUT Sara woke up Tired and lazy. She lay in bed Thinking Tor a while. Wasn'T iT Tunny? She had almosT become religious yesTerday -she, oT all people! Queer how iT happened. Lucky she hadn'T been Taken in wiTh all ThaT senTimenTal old sTuTT. Thank heavens l'm a modern girl and can'T be Tooled wiTh all ThaT TornToolery. O. K., mom. l'm coming. Yes, ma'am. Sara sure was a modern girl. I0 The STorm By Charles Ancrum All was silenT, hoT, and heavy, NOT a rusTle, noT a rnurrnurg SilenT as The ghosTly midnighT, STill and guieT as The norThland. Then wiTh lowly muTTering rumbles Growing louder, dense in volume, Came The norThwind and iTs broThe Thunder and The Tlashing lighTningg Man and loeasT boTh Tied in Terrorq Trees were Tossed as children's pIayThings And The rain came down in TorrenTs Drenching all ThaT lay loeneaTh iT. Then The Thunder passed To wesTward WiTh iTs rurnlole growing TainTer And The black clouds slowly Tollowed, Giving way To glorious sunshine. rs, s 'I 1 f' P 'mf A I 1 il-',,1f1.Ax v T hw! fi I J' 'EW Y -Sur 'ZIV 1 ,Sgt Mqiqw 1, 4x ami w W ft YP' We il 1 nhu x-'QI 'NM '91 170 rlmlfl NWMWWEWK QM IBTA fy-5, U' -S 'wx In' mawi W IAN F W sw 93,5 'f imwn 4418 63 F, P Ji. vfi r xi' 'Jlv il 1 p Y :Gila if ai' rf N ,J 4-lf' wi . fl' 1. ,Q MIA 9' ffY'1swwv,-JTMM: T uf- ' Iwf 1: VTWWH1 451 fem-I lf TV' ' U J f QE-jI Y 'N W Irusgbr M9-'L l xc ru-Y W. KI HALF WISE SAYINGS By HYMAN DANOWITZ IT is mosT inTeresTing To noTe in our body oT proverbs how conTradic- Tory many oT These adages can be. The basic reason Tor These con- TradicTions lies in The Two opposing schools oT ThoughTg one advocaTes, Make way Tor Tomorrow g The oTher, Be merry Tor Tomorrow you die. LeT us look inTo The banTer ThaT arises Trom conTlicTing proverbs. The SToics, especially Beniamin Franklin, would say, A penny saved is a penny earned, and Save Tor a rainy clay. To wha+ avail? The Epicurians will answer, A Tool and his money are soon parTed. For The proverb, Never puT oTT Till Tomorrow whaT you can do Today, There is The answer, There is always Tomorrow. We have learned many a lesson Trom The Table oT The anT and The grasshopper, buT along sTanding moTTo among The lTalians has been, IT is charming To be idle. A Ta- mous Frenchman once said, IT is worse Than a crime: iT is a blunder. Did he TorgeT ThaT To err is human? I-low silly iT.is To Look beTore you leap, when I-Ie who hesiTaTes is IosT. I now come To The greaT Thinker, DescarTes, whose moTTo was, I Think, ThereTore I am. To him, mind was The criTerion oT living. YeT, Tor all his ThoughTs, he did noT change The world. ArgumenTs and Theories perTaining To philosophical poinTs oT view have never changed The world despiTe The TacT, The pen is mighTier Than The sword. In The words oT The immorTaI Khayyam: MyselT when young did eagerly TrequenT DocTor and SainT and heard greaT ArgumenT AbouT iT and abouT-buT evermore Came ouT The same Door as in I wenT. I would like To close wiTh a Trilogy which runs beyond The ridiculous: TruTh conquers all, Love conquers all, and Work conquers all. GeomeTrically speaking, Things equal To same Thing are equal To each oTher. ThereTore TruTh musT be love, and love musT be TruTh: work musT be TruTh, and TruTh musT be work, sTrangesT oT all, however, is The remain- ing equaTion, love musT be work. I2 April Snow By Philip Lerner Days were soTT, young blood began To sing, Quickened TresheTs bursT inTo a run, And swiTT, new liTe, placing TrusT in Spring, Too soon worked upward in The sun, Too soon The sTiTTened earTh, grown Tree, ThrusT TorTh sTark blades oT curious green, Blinking in The lighTg Too soon The Tree Awakening, drew liTe-blood, Tresh and clean. And whiTe magnolias, bursTing wiTh suspense, Bared Their pale Taces in counTless rows, Too soon They Throbbed, To lie a vain expense WilTed exTravagance on rooT-whiTe boughs. A swiTT shroud, slipping soTTly To The earTh, CuT deep and piercing wiTh a chilling blow: FragranT blossoms Tringing Spring's new birTh, l-lalT-open buds ranged sTill-born in The snow. Life By Abraham Elfenbein I dropped The Tilm inTo The Tray, And waTched The acid eaT iTs way Through gelaTine and celluloid, UnTil Trom ouT The blackesT void A My Tace appeared and sTarecl aT me- And blurred inTo inTiniTy . . . It is rumored that some famous names will be present. S100 a plate. OBITUARY ment to the press. Lerner's message to the people has a familiar ring to it. He says, I promise a football in every backyard if the citizens cooper- ate with the new administra- tion. Fliiwefr wishes Lerner loads of luck! We also wish to extend our condolences to those plucky la- dies, Yolande Scibelle and Pearl Newirth, the defeated candidates. At their campaign headquarters yesterday, Elean- or Bromer, their manager, and chairlady of the Women-for- Offices Party, spunkily said in a humorous imitation of a haughty voice, 'tYolanda and Pearl now have the double hon- or of being the first women to run for such offices in the United States and also the first women to be defeated for this. Hush, and I'll tell you a secret: There are rumors going around that this staid old conservative start- ed his political career on a soap box while still attending high school in Brooklyn, New York. However, all rumors are denied. Can it be that his friendly po- litical rival, Ruth Geiger, start- ed it all? Antonio Serino, motion pic- ture magnate, is Secretary of Theaters and Motion Pictures. Edward Spierer, noted surgeon, is Secretary of the Interior, ap- propriately enough. FLASH Flash! Frankie Turner copped the National Basketball Cham- pionship and the International Handball Championship at the Athletic Meet today.
