While many may recall in this phrase a re- cent popular album by The Moody Blues, others will find in it more than music and poetry. They will sense the rhythm of the campus and mood of college life. Seniors at Commencement will be re- minded that their days of future have passed, that their formal training for lifetime occupations has ended or at least entered a new phase. College as a stage base for future work has long been part of the American tradition. Past generations have filed through the exits of academy with wistful thoughts and sober looks knowing they would return, if at all, only as alumni at reunions, homecoming events, and fund solicitation drives. Now society permits such attitudes to per- sist, it will do so at its peril. Change today is so rapid that return to college for retraining will become a Way of life. Average age of col- lege students continues to go up and retirement age is generally dropping. Many individuals will pursue three or even four distinct careers in their working life times. These are the most obvious facts of the days of future present. Are our days of future passed past? What lies in store in the future future? PRESIDENT CHARLES WEBB ,M mm. The idea is part of a program, The Campus Life Support Plan, which re- flects ECSC commitment to the growing concern with our nation's ecology and environmental improvement. Designed to enhance the beauty of the campus for the use and enjoyment of the entire community, the Life Support Plan envisions a campus filled with shade trees and flowering shrubs. The Life Support Plan symbolizes the ecology of hu- man interrelationships and seeks through campus beautjication, to create an awareness of the need we have for expressing our appreciation for the contribu- tion others have made to our lives. 2l 1 'Hia f mi? 53452235 Taffy f M nf l ' vii .ig i V ., ' gif T Q , , , gM f V f 42 . 5 ff' Q . ?' f' Q3 , 4 mfg I J k ?x J 5,tjZrZ.S'fx 5 Qi , sg, .5 i W 5? iq Q 4' M fi K ..1 , r - nlwfi fs Al W 5 V . , 901.2 'f K vin ' W- . The soccer team won their way to St. Louis, Missouri for the NAIA national soccer tournament and jhnished seventh in the country. En route, three players were selected for the All-Conference team, Joel Boisfoert, Ruppert delosReyes, and Dave O'Conner. The cross-country team again turned in a performance which displayed that they, too, must be considered for post season competition. The team certainly deserves much the same of what the major sports receive. .HA.,,4T, my Q H I S Y 1 1 Q I c . , i 5 E o e I 1 5 . 2 i X Time is undebhnable and indistinguishable, however, it is the manner in which we jill that time that makes it so important In 4 - 1 1 1 1 1 4 J E r 1 i i 4 I 1 3 I 1 5 w 1 ' 5 I 1 e 1 1 9 m L 1 Z N s I30 ,gf . 1 M Ve w What is this thing called Life? This year we performed The M agnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach with soloists and a 21, piece orchestra, including our new Dlem- ish III Zuckermann Harpsichord. Under the direction of Dr. Eldon Downing, the concert was most enthusiastically received by a full-house audience comprised of college and community folk. In addition to the Magnijhfcat, the choir sang a program of challenging music by Poulenc, Vittoria, Buxtehude, and Berlioz. Another dynamic concert was given in the spring by chorus and choir. D In addition to these annual concerts, the groups also per- form at social college and community events. Each year the choir participates in an Intercollegiate Festival at South- ern Connecticut State College. Our new Harpsichord was built by Mr. Walter Johnson and Mr. Edward Rekk, from a Zuclcermann hit. We now are in a position to perform music fy' all periods without 'relying on a loan from other colleges. The harpsichord was dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. James Skmfington. From the successful outcome of this year's and past years choral performances, and the generous support from the SGA, the future music life at Eastern looks very promising. si sk P35 ' pg e 15 5 EE Q W ,Q J' ,M 5 .Mk 3 . State College feel we must sincerely ac- knowledge the devotion and determination of a former student. Throughout the years this student has greatly influenced the his- tory of this college. In the 1930's and 1940's several attempts were made to discontinue the operation of this institution. This one person was in- strumental in the continuation of Eastern Connecticut State College as it exists today. For this we are grateful. Without the sup- port and perseverance of this person thou- sands of students would not have had the op- portunity to attend this college, ' With this in mind, we the stajf of the 1971, Sustinet take great pride in dedicating this yearbook to Mrs. Margaret C. Hurley. f In the early ,30's, Mrs. cHurley was elected Democratic State Central Com- mitteewoman from the 29th district, ran for state office in 1935, encouraged by an attempt of the state to close the Normal'School in Willimantic. In 1943 and 19.45 she was elected to the state senate. While. in the senate she campaigned to save the school after it wassburned to the ground in 1943. Through her petitions, delegations to hearings and promoting local support, the school, now known as Eastern Con-t necticut State College, received .Z'.900,000 to rebuild the main building from the state legislature. For this reason the food service center on campus, is named Hurley Hall. - - is rf L15 c MN sl ff' Wm Qin? win '39 mm '. A A N: .. -I is, 3 'I- Qf in ,f , M36 N? O ANN RAFALO K CLASS PRESIDENT ,f f Z OPE THE DOOR Sometimes I remember the old days, When the world was filled with sorrow, You might have thought I was living, but I was all alone In my heart the rain was falling, The wind blew, the night was calling, Come back, come back, I 'm all you've ever known Open the door and come on in, I 'm so glad to see you, my friend, You're like a rainbow comin' around the bend. And when I see you happy, Well, it sets my heart free. I 'd like to be as good a friend to you As you are to me. There were friends who could always see me Through the haze, their smiles would reach me, Saying okay, saying goodbye, saying hello. Soon I knew that what I was after Was life, and love, tears and laughter. Hello my good friend, hello my darling, what do you know? Open the door and come on in, I 'm so glad to see you, my friend, You 're like a rainbow comin' around the bend. And when I see you happy, Well, it sets my heart free. I 'd like to be as good a friend to you As you are to me. I used to think it was only me, Feeling alone, not feeling free To be alive, to be a friend. Now I know we all have stormy weather, The sun shines through when we 're together, I 'll be your friend right through to the end. Open the door and come on in, I 'm so glad to see you, my friend, You're like a rainbow comin' around the bend. And when I see you happy, Well, it sets my heart free. I 'd like to be as good a friend to you As you are to me. Open the door and come on in, I 'm so glad to see you, my friends, You're all like rainbows comin' around the bend And when I see you happy, Well, it sets my heart free.
