l l COACH WAYNE M. MCGRATH Coach Wayne McGrath unveiled the wraps on his 1961-62 version of the basketball Monsters against Davis-Monthan AFB on the college court November 27-28 and when the smoke cleared, Eastern had a pair of victories to its credit, 95-61, and, 81-63. The Air Base boys never had a chance as the fleet and nimble hosts buried them in a barrage of baskets. Ioe Acker and Him Douglas shared scoring honors in the set with Acker sluicing in 21 in the opener and Douglas setting the pace the following night with 26. Eastern then embarked on its initial road tour, a two game series with Palo Verde IC at Blythe, and got their first taste of things to come. PV triumphed twice, 65-57, and 78-76. Freddie Lewis pumped through 31 points in the second encounter. The Monsters returned home and succumbed to the Arizona Frosh, 87-71. The next evening, the Eastem cagers met up with the powerhouse Phoenix College Bears and lost a basket trading ses- sion 104-92. Acker and Lewis bagged 33 and 25 markers for the losers but the up-state rivals were just too big. The Monsters carried their four game loss string into Texas and before they left, it was six. Howard County JC jolted Eastern 74-61 at Big Spring to initiate the Lone Star junket and Odessa IC pinned the vis- itors with an 83-65 defeat. Douglas and Lewis were high men in both contests for the losers netting a total of 31 tallies apiece. The Monsters hardly had time to catch their breath as they met New Mexico Military Institute a day later after arriving at Thatcher. Both contests of the two game set were played right down to the wire but the Broncs clung to first half leads to wreak out 77-71 and 84-76 conquests. Acker paced Eastern the first evening with 20 tallies and Douglas led the squad with 23 in the following encounter. The Monsters took their eight game losing streak with them to Dixie Tournament at St. George, Utah, December 20. Rickis College of Rexburg, Idaho, defeated the Eastern cagers in the tourney lidlifter, 86-80. Douglas snared individual scoring honors with 28 markers. The Monsters snapped the none game dry spell the next day and at the same time gained partial revenge against Palo Verde IC for two- early season losses with a 66-50 victory. Eastern was treated to a rude farewell as the host Dixie five whomped the Monsters, 93-71.
