Dean Nellie Lee was Club Advisor. I First on the calendar of events was the annual Faculty Tea given in the home of Mrs. W. H. Harless. 'This tea was a lovely initiation into college life. The Las Amigas Ball came next as we advanced along the calendar. November 11 was the date and Orienta1e was the theme. On the final day before Christmas vacation the Las Amigas girls were guests of the Safford Womens Club at their Christmas Tea. A White Elephant party was the first activity of the second semester. In April, Las Amigas honored its mothers at their annual Mother and Daughter Tea. s0' f' 93' Cel ,QQ i , LAMBDA DELTA SIGMA Lambda Delta Sigma is a religious, honorary fraternity of Latter-Day Saint students enrolled at Gila College andother- colleges and universities Where an LD.S. Institute of Religion is established. Two chapters of this organization function at Gila College: Tau Alpha, boys' Chapter, officered this year by Wendell Bryce, Pres., Keith McRae, Vice-Pres., and Graydon Crabtree, Sec.-Treas., I'au Omega, Girls' chapter, headed by Bernadine Gibson, Pres., Gwendolyn Judd, Vice-Pres., and Olive Ferrin, Sec.-Treas. Orlando McBride, Director of the Institute, acts as adviser to both chapters As suggested in the preamble to its constitution, the purpose of Lambda Delta Sigma shall be to promote in the lives of its members, and on the campus, ideals of Religion, Fellowship, Intellectuality, Culture, and Leadership. The outstanding social and cultural events of this year have been the formal Sweet- heart's Ball, a Valentine-season affair, and the informal banquet held in the spring as a fond farewell to missionaries, parting friends, and classmates., Other events of the-year never to forsake memory were the Corn Roast of the Hills, the Xmas party for Fun, the Spanish Supper by the girls, and the Range party by the boys. ' l l DELTA PSI QMEGA y P uuuu in l The Dramatic Fraternity of the Campus Pledging their support to the dramatic department of G.j.C., Delta Psi Omega welcomed eleven new members into their organization with two outstanding initiations. Various events included in the ceremony were wild bronc busting, a new version of V Peter Peter, Pumpkin Eater, fset to the music of Gila's school songj and several masterful orations delivered by those desiring admission to this association. Climaxing the eventful year, led by Spencer Palmer, Presidentg Ulban Chavez, Vice presiclentg and Nelda Larson, Secretary, was a picnic held at Marijilda Canyon. It is with 'these activities in mind that we feel this honorary fraternity has been one of the outstanding of the year. fxfxi 1 .lab Mgr K Q9 I X X 669965 O Q39 Q9 9 X y .j'-.1VYf:..,-.-,,-::, ,,,,Y V r lr , , QTHEJR ACTJIVILTUIJES ' v, I S X ' P T TFP? How- ever, all music on the campus does not originate in the Music Cottage so that a composite picture of Gila's music makers would include almost any imaginable combination of performers produc- ing almost any imaginable combination of sounds. Groups from the Music Department performed throughout the year at various school and community functions. At the end of the year the classes in Harmony presented a program of original compositions in conjunction with an exhibit by students of the Art Department with the aid of the entire school served as hosts to the Eastern Arizona High School Music Festival. Perhaps the high points of the year were the band trip to Phoenix and El Centro, and the choral groups' performance of the Messiah and H. M. S. Pinafore. Another year promises richer harmonies, more exciting rhythms, and increased tempo for music at Gila. CHEER LEADERS Colleen Layton, Olive Perrin, Carol Ellsworth. 7 1- mares, .-...--. V.. A return game at El Centro with the Arabs was a hard fight with the local squad barely edging the California team 14 to 7. The last game of the season, played at Thatcher on Thanksgiving day, was perhaps the hardest game the Gila eleven played all year. This game against the Mustangs of Silver,City, New Mexico, saw a team that had been beaten by Gila earlier in the season out for revenge, and the local team, who were' determined to close the season with only one loss. Only after a hard drive in the closing minutes and a spectacular completed pass, were the Monsters able to beat the Silver City team, 12 to 6. ,Y-yt ,fn 7,.1Yl4,,g,, J 15, VY.. 4,2 : ' - ' -. 3-zo, ,mx-.E ,, , .........- ..,-.-...M .im,.-,.. l in 'Y' l'fi 2:3 .,-M I . l , , ' 4 F Y . . Out of ten games played, the Monsters won nine, their only loss being on a snow covered field, in Ogden, Utah. In the first game played the Gila squad beat an Army team from Beaumont Hos- pital El Paso, Texas, 12 to 6. Next came the Silver City Mustangs who went down H 21 to 12. The reserve squad from Flagstaff State College came next and bowed to the Gila eleven 12 to' 7. Then came El Centro junior College from California who lost to the Monsters 15 to 0. The following game with the Tempe State reserves was an easy 3 win for Gila, 26 to 6. I Traveling by plane to the Utah city of Ogden set a precedent, but the trip proved fatal for the Gila squad by losing to Weber Junior College 21 to 12. 4 .ae 1, .5 ii: 1 A ' M A 4 it 23:55. , r., ,. .L ,YM AHA. At the beginning of this school year there were about one hundred and fifty freshmen. A Since there were nearly three times as many freshmen as there are sophomores initiation was not held. In the early fall the freshman class threw their first big party. It was held in the early evening at Red Knolls. The refreshments included corn and ice cream. The following spring, the freshman assembly was presented I0 the Gila College Student body: It was given on April 25. L The most important function of the ,year was held April 3, Thursday before Easter. The theme was Easter Parade. Decorations, refreshments and floor shows followed right in step with the theme. Early in the year, class elections were held which resulted in placing Tommy Jarvis, I a post graduate and pre-medical student, as president. Voted to assist him were Harry Dees of Duncan as Vice-President, and Melva Butler of Eager as Secretary. V The Sophomores, boasting a membership of only 55 to the Freshmen's 208, had to forego some of the annual interclass activities. Faced with the gigantic task of so few Sophomores initiating so many Freshmen, plans for the initiation somehow got mixed up with a maze of school assignments, and the initiation never ,did materialize. Likewise, the annual Freshman-Sophomore Tug o'war went unaccomplished by virtue of the fact that so few faced so many.
