A 3-Qu LIE SOUVIENIUR Annual Publication of the Eastchester High School SIXTEENTH EDITION Eastchester High School Tuckahoe, New York 1940 Foreword The old family album is a beloved book that becomes more cherished as the years go by. Each page brings back recollec- tions of some joyous, sorrowful, or humorous situation that occurred in a day when our hearts were filled with the lightness and freedom of youth. If we are of the sentimental type, we may allow a tear or two to shed itself unnoticed, or, if we are not inclined to such tender sentimentalism, we may permit a smile to flicker across our lips, as some particularly dear memory is brought back to us by a picture or note. It is with this thought in mind that we create our Eastchester album-a permanent record of our friends, classmates, and activities. We hope that, like other family albums, this album will help recall these endeared scenes of our youth long after we have left our school, and have entered a world of new friends and of different aspects. lLlE SOUVENIR . CLASS OF 1940. Dear Seniors: lust as your book depicts the olden times as compared with the present, your lite, during the next few years, will unconsciously be colored with the same thought-your high school days versus your present days. In high school, you have been under the rather close supervision and guidance of your teachers. We have tried, however, to help you to stand upon your own feet, we have tried to teach you to be honest, tolerant, opti- mistic, conscientious, trustworthy, loyal and understanding. The world has always needed men and women with these traits of character. The world ot today, however, with conflagration, striie, distrust and discontent running rampant, needs, perhaps more than ever, men and women who possess such traits. It is my earnest hope that you will go out in the world and take a place in it that will make you proud of yourself and us proud ot you. The school has grown to such a size that time has not permitted me to know each one ot you as well as I should like, it is my loss. So, as a class, may I congratulate you and wish you every success in your post-high school lite. Sincerely yours, Enya J Munn .Jac ins sopvisivrn .st X Literary 66lLo Souvonirgg Staff CLAIRE SPARAClN, Editor-in-Chief Art Typists Dolores DePavo1is-Foglietta Ida Marocco Frances Herbermann Edith Wilshusen Virginia Buermann Doris Pearson Harold Page Eileen Coughlin Margaret Wilson Photography Yahronie Kopooshian Norma Voelker Edith Moucha Blanche Nisbet Marianna Rocco Catherine Evangelista Mildred Gleason Annette Corradi Mary Sheehan Athletics Iohri Heavey Damaris Taussig Undergraduate Editors Wright Watson FRANCIS BREITER, Business Manager Advertising Managers Thomas Sette Spencer Scheiss Raymond Matteau Iames Brophy David Oppenheim Robert Puglisi Mildred Salvatore Emilio Santipadri Louise Mazzuchelli Ruth Becker Walter Smith Robert Betts Barbara Graefenecker Iokes Gloria Fusaro Mary Frances Gersen William Home Richard Garon Ieannette Stonehouse Ruth Groendyke Subscription Managers Donald Sparacin Iohn Alexander Bernard London Andrew Albanese Donald Alexander MISS MARGARET TRACY, Faculty Advisor LE SOUVEN IR Faculty Notes The Eastchester Teachers' Association re-elected Mr. Henry M. LIE SOUVIENIIR 5 I Page Twenty-eight I 1 Glee Club '37, '38, '39, '40, Italian Club '39, Prom Com- Cllaiss ll-llisttory 1940 As our Alma Mater watches Timeless Eternity, turning with routine periodicity, the Album of 1940, leaf by leaf, her thoughts wander back over all the events which have been recorded during these past four years. As this thought flashes in her mind, the pages of the album flutter un- cannily backward. For a second, the strains of Love In The Moonlight fill the air. Now listen! The boisterous laughter of the Prince of Pilsen is heard. As Robert Neukirch is seen .diagnosing his patients in l'Oh Doctor , our be- loved Alma Mater cannot help smiling. Remember those beautiful operettas? But wait, the pages still fly. The melodious voice of Marion Tarter is heard singing the gypsy refrain of Chonita . Pictures continue to flash into view. Now is seen the Glee Club at the New York World's Fair, now at the Mohawk Hotel, ready to return home with second place honors in the New York State Contest and Festival. Concert after concert passes into view. Now she hears Louise Mazzuchelli playing The Moonlight Sonata with the voices of 125 boys and girls humming the background. Here startling cheering is heard by our Alma Mater. There, down on the Football field, is the team of the Cardinal and the Blue. They come from game after game, victorious. ln 1939, 1938, and 1937, Eastchester captures the mythical Class B championship of Westchester County. The pages continue to go back. To the strains of l'Sunrise Serenade , couples are seen dancing at the 1939 Iunior Prom. ln a faster tempo comes a quick glimpse of the Collegiate Hop and then the Spring Swing. Back, ever backward, go the pages. A joyous strain of Sur Le Pont D'Avignon is heard for a moment by our Alma Mater as the puppet show, presented by the French Club, is brought before her eyes. Now the sound of the gavel is heard as Aldo Petrillo brings a meeting of the Italian Club to order. But lol This meeting is quickly broken in by another, a meeting of the Greggonian Eagles. The flash of pages continues. Basketball games, plays, track meets, orchestra rehearsals, tennis matches and band concerts all whiz by. Then almost abruptly the pages fall to rest. The album is now opened to its last page. On this page is the list oi honors of the Class of 1940. lt is only fitting that we notice carefully with our Alma Mater this, the last page of the class album. Thus Alma Mater wisely does advise. For now that you on life's unruly Ways Must tread, trust not too much in words of praise 'tSet out to be that which you rnost admire, Bel not defeated by your own desire. There is a difference, which is plain, you see, In what you are and what you'd like to be. Go to your work with all your might and Will, And it the road be rough, don't wait until The rocks are leveled, making progress clear- For such success, the penalty is dear. To build high hopes on hills of sand is vain, So follow close the straight and narrow lane, And you will find out much to your surprise That lasting tame comes when you 'stoop to rise.' Dolores De Pavolis-Foglietta lLlE SOUVENIIR Page Fifty-two Class Song Tune: Cornell Alma Mater From these noble halls oi learning Hence we now shall fare. Ol remember friends, with yearning, Days with ne'er a care. Forward strive with every effort With our eyes on Right. May we raise ourselves in worth to Bring the goal in sight.
