History of the Class of 1953 One fatal morning in September, 19141, the doors of East Washington Grade School opened to admit a group of budding geniuses, our class Some of us were lucky enough to attain the honor of playing the sticks :Ln the school orchestra The outstanding mcident of the year was when Vincent Luppino righteously informed Miss Iams that Pat Shannon had his eyes open during the Lord's Prayer and got sent to the cloak room for his trouble In second grade Harilou Jones had the dubious distinction of being the one most often to sit in the punishment chair In third grade we became embryonic astronomers under the guidance of Miss Borland We were suppose to hold a flashlight under a paper full of pin holes to show us the location of the different stars Later on, we discovered another use for a flashlight In fourth grade we had Sharing Period every Friday afternoon at the instigation of Miss Hawkins One of the members of the class brought a little bottle of Coty's perfume, which he insisted came from the Egyptian pyramids Miss Hawkins was not convinced Fifth grade introduced us to our wonderful grade school library with it marvelous stock of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys A feud arose among the girls over the relative attributes of Cornel Wilde and Van Johnson In sixth grade we acquired two new members Linda Lee Blayney and Bob Fleming This was also the year of the founding of that epic organization, The Hot Licks Dramatic Society ' a brilliant production of As You Like It Needless to say, it never progressed much beyond the planning stage Jimmy Boyd came to us in seventh grade and immediately found eight girl friends We were exposed to the finer things of life via our Arthur Murray Dancing Class After these orgys, we descended on some poor, unsuspecting parents and ate them out of house and home W also learned a few new parlor games In eighth grade we instigated the annual Bazaar and Bake Sale This function was to raise money for the big event of the year, the Eighth Grade Dinner Dance We also had a tea to bid adieu to our old teachers and greet our new high school teachers This concluded our grade school days In 19149, we arrived an hour before the first bell for the purpose of getting desurable lockers This was easily accomplished, since we our first project was of Joyce Ramsey, Catherine McCartney, Elsle Powell, Patty Smith, Yvonne Anthomr, Tom Thomas, and Bob Lane We bewildered freshmen were guided through the year by Andy Knestrick, our math teacher Mr Jack received us w1th open arms our Sophmore year, but on the first day of the second semester, he delivered his famous lecture, which began, I hate Sophomores ' During Biology class, when we were disecting everything but each other, Joyce achieved prestige by skinning a frog Mrs Gilmore suffered with us through our Junior year while we slaved to pay for the Prom We were famous for our delicious hot dogs and our membership in the High-School Stocking Club of America At our Junior dance, the only people you could ever be sure of finding on the dance floor were the three faithful Junior couples Our Senior year began with a revival of football, which, unfortunately, failed to revive itself with much gusto This year we added our renowned class, the last member, Becky Waugh We were kept busy dodging Freshmen as we saw HBH faces every day for a month However we survived and laid plans for the triumph of the year, our Senior Class Play Finishing the year in a blaze of glory, we each go our illustnous way ll Ni lxfx . n Q 0 9 were the only ones in the building.
