The '81 Yifaeksters Row one: Jeff Glidden, Bill Clutter, Kasey Swan, Kelvin Strehlou, Ernie Aguilar, Duke Batchelor, Mike Flvrtn, Dan Owens. Row two: Tracy Johnson, Coleman Carle, Don Haweld, David Clutter, Mark Porter, Jim Misterek, Ryan Deakins, Dennis Fay, Paul Dolan, Russ Rexroat, Todd Lock, Todd Nordling, Ron Porter, Brad Cunningham. Standing: Coach McCarty, Richard Goggin, Kevin Powell, Mike Zellmar, Chris Lonam, Dave Bolton, Kenton Strehlou, Rick Bennett, Don Morgan, James Aguilar, Len Pederson, Dennis Glidden, Clark Combs, Coach Dolphin. The 1981 track season was not a successful one as-far as 1611171 competition goes. However, there were a number ofbright spots that make the 1982 team look exciting. Junior distance runners Duke Batchelor and Don Hatfield turned in outstanding efforts. Kasey Swan tied the school record in the highjump at 6'4 . Tracy Johnson was outstanding in the pole vault at l2'9 and Dan Owens didajinejoh in the throwing events. Oursophomores didan excellentjoh with Ernie Aguilar in the distances and Russ Rexroat being outstanding. - Coach Howard Dolphin. The 1981 track season was theyear that oursophomores did lhejohjor us throughout the season. The upperclassmen did their job as usual hut the younger competitors exemplified the hard work and dedication needed in this sport to succeed hy improving every week therehy establishing themselves as the nucleus offine teams to come. This year was also differentfrom past years in that it was theyear oftht distance men rather than the weightmen that got the headlines. Overall the season was a little disappointing with key injuries hurting out chances at placing higher in the standings, hut the positive side was the harc work and dedication shown hy all those who can proudly state that thej were a part of the 1981 East Valley track team. Standing: Coach Thacker, Ann Porter, Janet Dowty, Debra Leslie, Cora Aguilar, Vicki Carlsen, Shelly Deboer, Heather Arnold, Coach Gunderson. Girls track had their IHOSI successful season since beginning the sport in 1976. They were 8-4 in dual meets, 5th in the Mooberry Relays, 2nd in the Central Valley Invitational and 7th in the State Meet. Cora Aguilar set a State Record ofl45'7 in the discus, and was 2nd in the shot put. Debra Leslie placed 4th at state in the discus. There is an excellent group of sophomores andjuniors returning for the 1982 season. - Coach Glenn Gunderson. 771e girls track program at East Valley has benefited by both the track coaches, that 2 of Howard Dolphin, the boys track coach, and Glenn Gunderson, the girls track coach. It has been through this well conditioned program that the-1' achieved success. The girls team came a long way and there was vast improvement by all the girls involved and especiallv our State AA Champion, Cora Aguilar. Glenn sling' Gunderson has himself' built an excellent girls program and with the success and improvement of the junior high programs, the Girls Track team at East Valley should have excellent teams, non' and in the-future. - Coach Mike Thacker. 98
