edication the year lQ70 will see the Locust, and the entire Department of Journalism and Graphic Arts, move to new expanded quarters in a three-story, 48,000 square foot building located east of the present site of Dealey Hall, The old structure, made up of two army buildings, moved on campus from Camp lvlaxey. lt has housed yearbook, newspaper, journalism-related activities, speech, theatre, and printing since 1950. Dealey Hall is named in memory of the late George Bannerman Dealey, publisher of The Dallas Morning News. But, in spite of new academic homes and all the change the world fosters, some things still remain static, the prime example being a gentleman known throughout the campus, and more especially to inhabitants of Dealey l-lall, as Pappy. He signs the university payroll as Coy Carothers, but most journalism graduates from past years still only know him by his given name: Pappy. Students and faculty members have been coming in from cold, rainy East Texas mornings for years to find that the man in charge of maintaining Dealey Hall has been there first to fire up the boiler heating system, and, even more important, to brew another pot of his coffee. Patience, a decidedly bright outlook on life and a genuine concern for students and faculty alike mark this man's philosophy in working with people. Ask any apprehensive photography student who has dropped a bottle of film developer on a freshly-mopped floor. Pappy is always there with a smile, a word of wit, and a mop especially for the purpose of cleaning up such accidents. Any member of the journalism faculty who has somehow neglected to bring his keys to work will say that Pappy never fails to be where he is needed at the appropriate time. He is on the job long before anyone arrives in the morning for a 7:30 class, and he often sees the last student leave after a late lab session. The routine will continue when we begin operations in the new building. This yearbook, then, is dedicated inthe honor of two campus hallmarks: Dealey l-lall and Pappy Carothers. The former will, of necessity, be torn down someday, but the later will, we hope, continue as he has for at least another few years.
