W! 1447 'yy-f Q -A 4 ' J VI Page Z1 ' 1.1! ' INE degree classes of the East Texas State Teachers College - have preceded you into the great profession of teaching in Texas and the Southwest. It is now your opportunity to receive the honors and distinctions of this institution and to make for yourselves a place in the educational world as your predecessors have done. ln beginning your professional careers it is felt that the training which you have received in this institution, the culture with which you have been endowed and the spiritual devotion which has characterized you throughout your entire college career eminently fit you for service in. your chosen profession. ' It is now your responsibility to make some contributions to the great profession in which you have chosen to work. You are reminded that teachers ought not to be mere automatons, but they should be real dynamic forces in the communities where they work and should inspire the young life of America with the highest ideals for service to mankind. This service we confidently expect you to render. Your lives will no doubt be in keeping with the high ideals and standards of living you have seen exemplified on the campus of your Alma Mater. You should feel, therefore, a personal re- sponsibility in living up to the ideals in which you have thus far been schooled. A further suggestion is made relative to the con- tributions which you may make in life as the years come and go. The traditions of the college are made up of incidents taken from your lives. You should see to it, therefore, that the traditions of this college are made as rich and valuable as it is possible for human efforts to make them. The East Texas State Teachers College sends you forth with sympathy and love 'and.we trust that you may in return evince an abiding interest in and a loving devotion for the college in which you have received your training. REVIEW OF THE SEASON LTHOUGH Winning only half of their games, the Train- V, ing School Cubs Hnished the season in a blaze of glory on Thanksgiving Day by defeating Commerce Hi to the tune of ,7 to 0. This was by far the most thrilling game of the season, and the victory proved the Cubs city champions for the second consecutive year. I Coach Parsons started the season with several inex- perienced men, both in the line and the backfield, but by the end of the season the line and the backheld were functioning to perfection. If the Cubs could have gone into each game without injuries the season would have been somewhat different, but in almost every game the team Was injured in some way. Games were lost to Texarkana, Greenville, Celeste, Forney and Dallas Academy, While defeats were handed' Cooper, Ladonia, Leonard, Whitewright and Commerce Hi. Mayo, the founder of what is now the East Texas State Teachers College, was formally unveiled on June 3, 1926. This memorial was obtained through the combined efforts of the Memorial Com- mittee, however, Mr. J. M. Bledsoe, treasurer of the Committee is due credit for most of the Work. The funds for this monument came largely from students of the Mayo school. Other sources of income were clubs of the town, interest from money loaned and others. Un June 3, 1926, the treasurer's report gave as the total receipts 33,440.60g the total expenditures, QHS3,391.95, leaving a balance of 354865. Since the erection of the monument, numbers of things have been done to beautify the place around the tomb- flowers, shrubs, walks, and other things, to add to its attractiveness. The monument is of an unusual character, both in material and make-up. It is made of Minnesota Sunset red granite. En- graved upon it are sayings and beliefs of Mr. Mayo. It is a most imposing memorial. Everyone comes in costu-,me fitting for the occasion. The party is held in the old gymnasium, which is decorated in the seasons colors. The people are led through all sorts of spooky places into scare things. Unfortunately the atmosphere created this year caused one lady to faint as she was led by the man lying in the casket, p-resumedly dead. After the long voyage through the dwelling place of death and ghosts the party returns to the gym where refreshments are served. There is always music during the entire party. The college band furnished the music this year. One of the features of the program given is the awarding of the prizes to the two people who have the most appropriate and out- standing costumes. The program was a varied one, including some Spanish songs, Spanish dances, a short Spanish play. and, lastly, the feature of the program, a pantomime. This latter was a farce on the court life in the time of Queen Isabella, confused with modern life. It con- sisted of three scenes, the connecting thought being Columbus and his plea to the Spanish court for help, in order that he might discover a new World. The members of the King's cabinet are too busy with Charleston contests and other interests of modern l1fe to pay any attention to the pleas of the great discoverer. One of the best established traditions in the East Texas State Teachers College is that of the Christmas Carol service, held a few days -before Christmas, Linder the direction of the Music Department. The service is held in the College Auditorium, where hundreds of people of the school, the town and the surrounding country gather to hear the carols of praise and joy at the birth of Christ. The auditorium is darkened except for two candles and the soft Hood lights on the stage, where there is a Christmas tree. The Hood lights reveal a big star of silver on the top of the tree. The unusual thing about the star is that it is the same one that has beenused ever since the first carol service. The most impressive part of the Christmas Carol service is the processional, which enters from the back of the auditorium and marches quietly down the aisles singing O, Come All Ye Faithful. After this numbers of the Carols are sung, led by Miss Katherine Murrie and the girls of the Choral Club. Page 99 The C hristmas Tree StCHUlL.ARSHllllLlHlUNUR ROLL RECEPTIUN f , . MILIN' Through, the Commencement Play to be given on May 27, promises to be a fitting close for the third year of the Commerce Community Theatre. A smile-a tear-- a bit of sentiment-a lovely setting-good amateur acting- surely these will make an acceptable program. The theatre has had an interesting year! The plays produced have varied in their appeal. Flavin's Children of the Moon, tensely dramatic in spots, was well received. It was regarded by the majority as the best play of the year fthe Commencement Play excludedl. Emerson and Loos were up to their amusing and popular average in The VVhole Town's Talking. Every- one enjoyed the comedy. Volmer's Sun-Up, a compelling study of mountain life, was highly interesting. A group of one-act plays included Green Chartreuse, a thriller, Red Carna- tions, and Pierrot, the Dreamer. The Citamard Play had so many Little Theatre members in the cast that it might be included in our dramatic season. The Theatre celebrated Drama 'Week by presenting a one- act play before each of the Federated Clubs of the city, and two plays, one of which was by our Estelle Taylor, before the County Federated Clubs at Greenville. At the P. T. A. Convention, held in Commerce April 20-22, the Theatre presented f'On Ven- geance Height, by Davis. A loving cup was presented by the Theatre to Forney High School players, who on March 11, won the Interscholastic One- Act Play Contest in the district meet. Our Little Theatre had been organized with one purpose in view-to promote spoken drama in Commerce. Such a plan in- volves several factors: The equipment, director, actors, producing staff and the audience. iWe have all of these, but their blending into a unihed organization is not yet fully accomplished. We realize, however, that since real growth must come from within, rather than be superimposed, the future seems to promise that our enterprise will be a permanent, stable and valuable part of our com- munity life. I remain, Yours for spoken drama, lMlAUD WEBSTER, Dfireczor Pa e 105 CHILDREN UF THE MOUN B y FLAVIN 1 ,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,, ,, ,,...,,,,,,,,.. Page 171 PROSPECTS FOR 1927 ITH the return of Fargason, Sandlin, Gill, Stroud, Musick, Morris and Arthur, all lettermen of 1926, as il nucleus for the team of 1927, prospects are favorable for a winning season. These lettermen will be ably assisted by Z1 number of those who were members of last year's squad but failed to make their le-tter. This latter group includes some good men. Also, a number of men are showing up well from among the new material, and it is expected that men can be found to fill quite efficiently those places which were left vacant by those graduating or dropping out to teach school. However, some strong contenders for the conference title are looming up on our schedule and if we attain the rank and success that the Lions attained in the course of the 1926 season, it will be after a strong fight. The strongest teams that the Lions will oppose this season will be Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, and also Daniel Baker, conference title holders of the 1926 season. T., for the year before there had been only two or three lone boys out for 'track and that was more than there had been the year before. The '26 squad was composed of some very good material, however, and gave a good account of itself despite the lack of a Cinder path. With the return of two of the lettermen of '26 and several members of the '26 squad who did not letter, prospects should be bright when training starts early in the spring. T The men are handicapped by lack of a cinder path for a period of rainy weather under present circumstances seriously interferes with training. It is hoped that in the near future we shall have a cinder path, and it is a certainty that track will soon become a major sport at E. T., just as it has grown popular lately at our sister institutions. Page If! 1 Page 175' 9. it Xa f - 1 5 I . .. N v . Q SEARCY NEAL GARDNER Yix sox Distance H ab'-mile H urdles IJIISIIIHN' E. The Lions took 3 first places and 7 second places, while the Kangaroos copped 12 Hrsts and 7 seconds. THE T. I. A. A. MEET The Lions had little success at the T. I. A.
