SPELUNKING Then, a low, flat room with 0 flat slob in the middle, notes had been left where someone had camped here. I had trou- imogining sleeping with 10,000 tons of rock over my rising off of flommoble Ponic: we began to run back the way we had come, trip- ping and stumbling over the worrying about where we put our feet or honds; just running. We werenit thinking about bots, or mud, or scraped honds, we were only thinking about getting back through the cove. Further ponic was added to our flight when our lights began to dim. The gas in our lomps was running low, and all our spore corbide had been left by the stream. The flashlight bot- teries were going too. I didn't wont to imagine try- Off to one side of this room, we found the stream again, this time it ran way up ahead, with no end in sight, and it looked like there was 0 solid beach to walk on the entire woy. Then disaster struck. While crossing the stream on some rocks, l slid off into the water, almost entirely submerged in water. I wasn't worried about getting myself wet, but l had 0 plastic bog full of calcium cor- bide in my pack backpack. We could all hear it hissing. The flashlight batteries were getting dim, so l suggested we shut them off and paused to let them regother their power. If Hoire-Willioms worse come to worst, we could get out using Lono's camera flash unit. As we sot panting in the dork, hoping the flashlight would lost, we realized that it would lost and that it wasn't totolly dork. We were within 100 feet of the entrance, and the light from outside wos shin- ing around the corner. We laughed and climbed back up to the light of day, breathing in great lungfuls of clean, fresh air. Later we took core to rinse the cove spores out of our throots. Some people soy Listerine or Scope kills them foster, but l prefer the slower method: Budweiser. lt took several hours to kill them all, but I think it was worth the ex- tro effort, just to be on the safe side. - Ralph Dosser SPELUNKlNG 29
