Sigma Kappa ' s Triumph During Derby Day 75 Sigma Kappa Sorority took top honors in Sigma Chi Derby Day. Miss Susan Gray, a junior from Moun- tain City, representing Sigma Kappa was named Miss Derby Day. Other sororities placing in overall competition were Alpha Delta Pi, second place, and Kappa Delta, third place. Sigma Chi Fraternity annually sponsors Derby Week. The event is held to raise money for the fra- ternity ' s philanthropic projects. Nightly mixers and a dance are held to bring about greater Greek unity during the week. E. T. S. U. ' s seven sororities competed in such events as a derby steal, musical ice buckets, obstacle course, monkey business, and skin-the- snake. The derby steal was a subject of controversy during the week. The Panhellenic Council wrote a letter to the editor of the East Tennessean over this controversy explaining that a greater effort was being made for all sororities to work together in pro- moting Greek relations on campus and in the com- munity. The letter was written to apologize for any poor conduct exhibited by the sororities on campus during the derby steal. 1. Miss Susan Gray of Sigma Kappa was chosen Miss Derby Day. 2. Kim Harrison and Curly Malone urge the Phi Mu ' s on during Derby Day activities in the amphitheater. 3. Sigma Kappa ' s proudly display their first place Derby Day trophy.

Depart- ment of Speech and directed by Pro- fessor Robert O. Day. NRFT, as the show is better known, is a fast moving hour packed with fun and entertainment de- signed for children of all ages. The pur- pose of the show was to introduce chil- dren to fine literature at an early age and encourage them to read. Through the means of a reader ' s theater, chambc theater, choral speaking, fractured nur- sery rhymes, tongue twisters, and various other techniques, different types of litera- ture are brought to life on stage. 22 Nursery Rhymes Over-sized building blocks are the main props. These blocks are moved around during the show to create an image of the literature being presented. Sometimes the blocks become trees which are a chipmunks home or fence posts for a hog waller as in the improvi- sation of The Loud-Mouth Frog. At other times the blocks are completely dis- carded, and the audience is asked to participate with the cast as they play baseball, tag, follow-the-leader, or hide and seek. A show of this type requires people who are energetic, fun-loving, and creative. Sometimes people cannot recognize these humorous qualities in themselves. Under the careful guidance and patience of Professor Day, people are amazed at their hidden talents which can come to surface during the show. NRFT is truly one of the best produc- tions of the E. T. S. U. Speech Department.
