Sigma Kappa ' s Triumph During Derby Day 75 Sigma Kappa Sorority took top honors in Sigma Chi Derby Day. Miss Susan Gray, a junior from Moun- tain City, representing Sigma Kappa was named Miss Derby Day. Other sororities placing in overall competition were Alpha Delta Pi, second place, and Kappa Delta, third place. Sigma Chi Fraternity annually sponsors Derby Week. The event is held to raise money for the fra- ternity ' s philanthropic projects. Nightly mixers and a dance are held to bring about greater Greek unity during the week. E. T. S. U. ' s seven sororities competed in such events as a derby steal, musical ice buckets, obstacle course, monkey business, and skin-the- snake. The derby steal was a subject of controversy during the week. The Panhellenic Council wrote a letter to the editor of the East Tennessean over this controversy explaining that a greater effort was being made for all sororities to work together in pro- moting Greek relations on campus and in the com- munity. The letter was written to apologize for any poor conduct exhibited by the sororities on campus during the derby steal. 1. Miss Susan Gray of Sigma Kappa was chosen Miss Derby Day. 2. Kim Harrison and Curly Malone urge the Phi Mu ' s on during Derby Day activities in the amphitheater. 3. Sigma Kappa ' s proudly display their first place Derby Day trophy.

sA i The East Tennessee State University Amphi- theater was the setting for the University Theatre ' s spring production, A Winter ' s Tale by William Shakespeare, presented on May 15, 16, and 17. The Shakespearean comedy-tragedy in- volved the King of Sicily, Leontes, his acts of jealousy, and their results. Leontes was con- vinced that the visiting King of Bohemia, Polixenes, was his wife ' s lover. Leontes ordered that Polixenes be imprisoned. Polixenes learned of the plot and escaped to Bohemia. The King then imprisoned Hermione. She gave birth to a daughter, Perdita, while in jail. Leontes ordered that the child be taken into the wilderness to die. A shepherd found the child and raised her in Bohemia. Sixteen years later Perdita met Prince Florizel, the son of Polixenes. Perdita fell in love with him, but Polixenes would not allow them to marry. The young couple later fled to Sicily. A Winter ' s Tale was directed by Mr. Jack Peyrouse of the Speech Department. 5.
