Through their music, these young men attracted audiences for those who campaigned for a college in East Tennessee. The taxpayer is our source of financial support. W ith the serene and inspiring natural beauty of East Tennessee, no better site could have been selected for our college. For this reason, we can especially appreciate the generous donation of George L. Carter who gave the original tract of 120 acres for East Tennessee State Normal. It was through the tireless efforts of five men, however, that the state was persuaded to make a provision for normal schools in Tennessee. Dr. P.P. Claxton, S.A. Mynders, R.L. Jones, J.W. Brister, and Sidney Gilbreath campaigned continously from 1902 to 1911. The political influence of the 1909 and 1911 Tennessee legislatures, dedication of ideals, direct contributions of time and money, and the loyal support of Tennessee citizens all have made State possible. It has been the hard work of administrators and the support of the college alumni who have successfully steered East Tennessee State College through her early years on to maturity. It is the taxpaying citizen who has financially enabled our college to prosper and expand. It was this land that inspired past generations, the people who founded our college. Now it is lor us to appreciate, not only lor its external beauty, but for our great heritage. The Tennessee Legislature of 1909 authorized the State Board of Education to establish three normal schools.
