T. S. C. She later attended Duke and Harvard Universities, and has the following degrees: Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, and Master of Education. Miss Ross is known widely for her Work in education and civic affairs. The great man or woman thinks for himself and decides for others only when it is to their advantage. Through decisions Miss Ross has helped us to make, and through her unselfish efforts to promote our interests, We have felt her distinctive quali- ties of idealism and integrity of character, which all of us may endeavor to reach, but few will ever attain. Captain Holsclaw scored on a pass from Tolley, and Patterson converted to hold a lead at halt-time 7-6. Earls scored on an end run in the third period and Patterson again added the extra point. Wesleyan rallied tor a fourth period score but the victory had been won by the point after touch- down margins. BUCCANEERS-l4 ERSKINE COLLEGE-20. After dominating the game tor three quarters and leading 14-13 by virtue of two runs by France. The Bucs' were defeated by a heavier Erkine eleven who pushed over the game clinching touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard dash through tackle. Touchdowns by France and Carrier provided the second Win of the season for the Bucs' who played the game in a sea of mud. France scored on a 49 yard dash aided by beautiful downtield blocking to give the State eleven the lead at halt-time. The second touchdown, scored in the second halt, was set up by a pass to Chunk Lane, a few short thrusts into the line and Carrier scored on a neatly executed around the end play. Returning to the cage warfare after the Christmas holidays they lost two straight to the Western Carolina Teachers and Carson-Newman respectively. Following this they topped Emory, the Bristol Inde- pendents and Tusculum before bowing to Maryville, L. M. U., and Milligan. The Milligan game was one of the highlights of the season, being the first of two scheduled games that marked the resumption of athletic relations between the two schools. A big share of the pitching duties fell to Buddy Poole and Kay Haun with the stalwart Bob Tran- barger on the receiving end. Tranbarger was also a power at the plate, aided by Paul Musselrnan, outfielder, and Bill Kirnsey, first baseman. Vest, lack France and Campbell helped Mooney to round out a good infield combination that produced a Winning ball club. TRACK EA 0 0F 1 4 The State track team for the l947 season was organized by Bob Schappert and Earl Lane who gathered the boys who were interested together and entered two meets. Training was entirely self-governed. The team traveled to Mars l-lill College and came away with victory. Entering the Milligan Relays at Roosevelt Stadium in Iohnson City, they came out third. A good record for the year. Coach Roberts is looking forward for a well organized program in the '48 season with almost all traclcmen returning. Coach McN eil Iohn Burrus TEN 15, X W 5. N EA 0 0F 1 The Buccaneer tennis team made a splendid record tor itself during the l947 season. Led by lohn Burrus and Tack Britton, two oi the best in the state, they swept over all opposition in the small college area ot East Tennessee with two wins each over Carson- Newman, Maryville, Emory ci Henry, Lincoln Memorial Univer- sity and Mars l-lill. On a trip to the University ot Tennessee and Swanee they were defeated twice. At U. T. Burris won his sinales match and combined with lack Britton to win the doubles.
