orewon The Buccaneer of 1939 is our contri¬ bution to the greatest year in the history of the State Teachers College. It has been the supreme desire of the staff to prepare a book illustrating the accomplishments of the school during the past year, whether they be grave or gay. It has been our aim to record and to preserve herein the many events that will serve as a lasting memory in the hearts of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-Nine. You are the judge. -THE EDITOR THE CLASS OF 1939 Respectfully dedicates this volume of The Buccaneer To Registrar of The State Teachers College, as a symbol of appreciation of his ability as a teacher, his true spirit of friendship, his faithfulness as an advisor to the students, his cooperation with and capable direction of the publications of this college. Arm in arm, we have walked the campus paths; head to head, we have studied our difficult problems; shoulder to shoulder, we have pushed against that bulwark known as graduation, and today we are ready to make that final sprint across the finish line. CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS Coach Gene McMurray, a gentleman and a scholar, led the Buccaneers to a conference championship in football and a very close run¬ ner-up in basketball. Coach McMurray has always stressed sportsmanship even above vic¬ tory and he is respected throughout the confer¬ ence by officials and opponents as one who loses as gallantly as he wins. Coach McMurray is a graduate of Maryville College where he was a five letter man, probably being the best all-round athlete in the history of the school. He is one of the very few coaches in the south who holds a doctors degree, having received it from Columbia University in 1937. This year Coach McMurray was most ably assisted by Walter Clark in the football season. Clark is a former Teacher ' s College football captain in 1937, as well as all conference player for four years. Coach J. G. The Bucs came second in the Smoky Mountain Conference Race, losing out by only a half-game margin. Boyer, Ryburn, and Bullington will be lost from this year ' s five squad by graduation. The Choir, Chorus, and Orchestra participated in the annual rendition of Handel ' s MESSIAH and also presented a concertized version of Von Flotow ' s MARTHA. The Band has shown a marked improve¬ ment in its musicianship, the greater part of its time being devoted to concert music. The various Clubs have provided programs at the college and have given numerous programs in neighboring schools and churches. A group of vocalists and instrumentalists journeyed to Knoxville where a half-hour pro¬ gram was given over WNOX. A series of programs over the local radio station WJHL were presented. The enlarged Music Department which provides a complete course of study for potential music supervisors, has been instrumental in bringing fine musical talent to the college. Several far reaching events have also given the college prominence. These include the Annual Music Festival which grows yearly, the first authentic and accredited School Orchestra and Band Contest in East Tennessee which was held on April 14th, the guest adjudicator and con¬ ductor being the world famous Dr. Frank Simon, and All-College Night which is growing rapidly. This year eight colleges participated, representing North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
