Faculty JUDSON L. STEWART BARNETT NXLTAYLOR ERNEST O. BOWER Technical Assistant prinfgpal Academic Assistant Principal Principal August 30, 1907: Construction of East Technical was begun. October 12, 1908: James F. Barker, first principal of East Technical, started classes with 700 pupils and a faculty of 40. 1909: Scarab first appeared as a monthly publication. 1910: The introduction of the June Bug to East Technical. 1911-1916: Mr. Charles H. Lake, appointed second principal of East Technical. Seventy students and six faculty members served in World War l, 1916-1920: Mr. H. D. Bixley became the third principal. Gridders won senate championship in '15, '16, and '17, 1920-1927: Mr. Harry A. Bathrick became fourth principal. First Student Government was inaugurated at East Technical. Tech's greatest football team played for the national championship. 1927-1936: Mr. Pliny H. Powers was appointed fifth principal Camp Frost, the only cabin of its type in Ohio, was built by the students and faculty in 1933. Jesse Owens broke three world scholas- tic records and tied another. 1936-1940: Mr. B. W. Taylor became East Tech's sixth principal. Mr. Taylor introduced several changes upon entrance to East Tech- nical: 45 minute lunch periods, courtesy guard system, and 20 minute noon movies. 1941-1945: Three hundred forty-eight East Tech men were known to be killed serving their country during World War ll. About 9,000 men in all served from East Technical. Mr. Bower appointed as assistant principal in 1943. Only remaining original member of the East Tech faculty of 1908 is Mr. Stewart. 1945-1948: Harrison Dillard, brilliant hurdler, stars in United States and Europe. Jim Jughead Martin plays end for third year at Notre Dame. School attendance drops to 1,400 pupils. East Tech swim team wins city and state titles. June '48
