CHOOL HI STORY August 30, 1907: Construction of East Technical was begun. October 12, 1908: James F. Barker, first principal of East Technical, started classes with 700 pupils and a faculty of 40. Among the first faculty members were and still are: Mr. J. W. Vickerman, Miss Laura McGowan, and Assistant principals V. D. Mawkins and J. L. Stewart. 1909: Scarab first appeared as a monthly publication. 191O: The introduction of the June Rug to East Technical. 1911 1916: Mr. Charles H. Lake, now Superintendent of Cleveland Public Schools, was principal of East Technical, following Mr Barker’s resignation; 72 students and six faculty members served in tire World War. 1916- 1920: Mr. Charles H. Lake received a promotion to superintendency. Mr. N. D. Bixley succeeded him to the principalshtp. The Gridders were senate champs in '15, '16, and ’i7. 1920 - 1927: Mr. Bixley resigned anc Mr. Harry A. Bathrick succeeded him. Un-dcr Mr. Bathrick, the irst Student Government was inaugurated at East Technical. Tech’s greatest football team played for the national championship on the west coast, but lost. 1927-1936: Mr Bathrick was appointed to assistant superintendency and Mr. Pliny H. Powers appointed to be principal. Camp Frost, the only cabin of its type in Ohio, was bui't by the students and faculty in 1933. National Honor Society was introduced into East Technical in 1931 and the Hay-Tech parties were started. Jesse Owens broke three world scholastic records end tied another. On the team with Jesse were Dave Albritton, Alfred Storey, and Jerome Williams, all winners of national track titles. 1936 -1940: Mr. Powers promoted to First Assistant Superintendent of Cleveland Public Schools and Mr. Taylor became East Technical’s sixth principal. Mr. Taylor introduced several changes upon entrance to East Technical: 45 minute lunch period, longer school day with two shifts. Courtesy guard system, and 20 minute noon movies. The student council of East Technical inaugurated many new committees. Among the new ones are the Information Desk and Ettiquette Bureau. This bureau is headed by Miss Parmenter, Mrs. McCarthy, and Miss Zangerle. The June 19 0 Class, the largest ever to graduate from East 7 echnical, will have 592 graduates, many of whom were placed by East Technical’s efficient Placement Bureau, headed by Mr. Scott.
