Q Y EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY EAST sTRouosBfuko, PENNSYLVANIA 18301 Office of me President-47171424-3545 Yearbook Staff and ESU Community Congratulations on this outstanding journalistic effort focusing on those activities and events that summarize another good year at ESU. The many hours for compiling, editing, producing, and distributing this publication are greatly appreciated by all. As we complete our second year as a more autonomous university, we are moving forward in areas of academic planning, financial planning, and development. We continue to give recognition and attention to the outstanding learning experiences that students have in the various areas of student activities. -We see students continually learning and growing as they interact with other students and members of the academic community it these important co-curricular programs. All these experiences help foster the total development of the students to better them for their leadership roles in society. The Stroud has indeed memorialized a number of these activities which students will long remember. Again, congratulations on this 1985 yearbook. It is a manifestation of the important things that have happened at ESU this past year. Sincerely yours, fQ,M...Cs93eQC Dennis D. Norman Gelber, an English pro- fessor, is retiring after twenty-four years of love for and devotion to the students here at East Stroudsburg University. Dr. Gelber is a true hero in our eyes, and we shall all miss him dearly. So, here's to you, Dr. Gelber: Sir, we salute you! For you and me, this is our valedictory year as we say farewell to East Stroudsburg University and look ahead. We share a rite of passage: you from an undergraduate to a graduate status, and I from 'S the teaching profession to retirement. We wave goodbye to the academic world with bitter-sweet memories. We feel sad because we leave the campus where we have increased our knowledge and skills, enriched our lives with cultural activities, and enjoyed the social exchange with students and faculty. Yet we treasure the years we have devoted to the joint adventure of learning, which gives us the deep satisfaction of personal growth. Though we head in different directions on our compass, we share the excitement and the challenge of moving into a new phase of our lives because it is like ventur- ing into new territory without a detailed roadmap. So I wish all of you success and self-fulfillment - whether or not it is tax-deductible. Norman Gelber Associate Professor of English Reflection on Retiring On this, my valedictory year of waging war on ignorance a quarter-of-a-century's hoard of academic souvenirs adorns my shelf of memory. Had I remained a business man, steeped in profit and loss, I might have reaped a rich portfolio and sported round the Riviera - or skidded toward a coronary. Instead I chose the teacher's role, content to gain a bookish wealth and thrive upon the give-and-take with colleagues and the cavalcade of students stumbling toward the light - Norman Gelber aaszm. fav , - ,X ff' My - O ' H We 2, Rf- Vr i . 1,-155 if 392-'R Art L to R: John Mclntyre, Irene Mitchell, Ed Demansky s Biolo y Front Row, L to R: Henry N. The Varsovia String Quartet performs in front of hundreds in the ESU auditorium, and proves once again to us Yankees here that they are indeed among the best quartets in Europe. The experiments, though they continue today, are always a success as can be evi- denced by the growing attendance at the performances. People who used to consider jazz, folk, and blues as forms of mutant, aberrant music, start attending the shows and are discovering that they almost missed the boat. Through wonderful performers such as Barry Drake, George Gritz- bach, Elaine Silver, Kim and Reggie Harris, Linda Black, and Reverend Fred Kirkpatrick, the students of ESU are both educated and enter- tained - no easy feat on any campus. Susan as Freundlich Through a presentation of song and dance routines accom- panied by sign language, Susan Freundlich attempts to bring the language of the deaf to the hearing and give the latter the rare opportunity to experience what the deaf world is like. And successful she is, for by combining moving lyrics, graceful dance steps, and sign language, Freundlich evokes the emotion and heightens the sensitivity of every member of the audience . . . an audience that feels each moment of the performance - whether they hear it or not. , . ., Newark Boys Choir The Newark Boys Choir has performed all over the world and is con- sidered to be one of the finest choral groups in the country, but this talent is apparently wasted on an ESU audience, one described as Mammals by choir director David Butterfield. Turning deaf ears to the boys' renditions of everything from madrigals and Gospel music to Aaron Copeland and Stevie Wonder, students laugh, shout, and even throw paper airplanes. Our apologies to the Newark Boys Choir, although their performance does not impress or inspire the students of ESU, it is nevertheless an exhibition of rare and commendable talent. 1' Q S f V x ' V .fl , A 1, J if X 87 C.U.B. Champion, EIGL Co-Championl lt is another championship season for Coach Bruno Klaus and his ESU men's gymnastics team. The Warriors win the first United States Gymnastics Federation Collegiate Championship for Division II and III teams and tie for first in the Eastern Intercollegiate , 7 ,, League. lt is the third straight national title for the ESU gymnasts, who won the NCAA Division II championship in both 1983 and 1984. The Warriors finish with a 10-1 dual-meet record, beating all seven EIGL opponents including ten-time champion Southern Connecticut which ends the Owls, 23-meet league winning streak. The only loss is to NCAA runnerup Penn State. In the EIGL championship meet, Coach Klaus' team sets a school record of 273.60 points, but still place second to Temple's 275.10. Three ESU gymnasts win national titles - Joao Luiz Ribeiro in the all around and side horse, Jamie Clements on the still rings and Russell Wallace in the vaulting. Ribeiro is an EIGL champion on the high bar while Devot Garrett, who missed the USGF nationals, wins the EIGL floor exercise title and ties for first in the vaulting. Felipe Sanchez and Den- nis Vazquez also are USGF All-Americans. Nine of the 14 letter- winners are freshmen and sophomores, eight of whom are new to the ESU program. Five of the team's losses are by a single goal or in overtime and two other defeats are by a two-goal margin. The Warriors carry nationally-ranked C. W. Post into over- time before losing. MEN'S SOCCER Q13-6, School Record for Most Regular- Season Winsl The Warriors set a school regular-season victory record with a 13-6 mark and place second in the Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division during the 1984 campaign. Coach Jerry Sheska's squad has a potent offensive punch, scoring 53 goals, only two short of the school record. The single-game high is in a 7-1 romp over arch- rival West Chester, which represents the most one-sided series win ever over the Golden Rams and the most ESU goals in a game in 15 years. ,The Warriors have wins over five NCAA Division l opponents and nearly stun Penn State, leading 1-0 before the Nittany Lions score with 3:18 remaining in regulation and then score three overtime goals against a short- handed, ten-man ESU squad for a 4-1 win. ,I is f - lf Jus- '51 Q ,ttt,t 4 ' - 3- llc., ..f., ,Qi fe?- ! ..r Wai, av gl ' si t . The team beats the nine op- ponents it lost to the previous year. There also is an im- provement of two places to sixth in the team's Penn- sylvania Conference finish. il Mi 'Dif- MEN'S BASKETBALL 13-241 The Warriors have perhaps their youngest and least experienced men's basketball team ever with five new starters and a roster of five freshmen and four sophomores. The team wins its first and last games, both over Kutztown, but in between, there is only one victory, a decision over West Chester. lt ends a 20-game losing streak. Coach Lee Roberts' squad still is in contention in many of the con- ' tests, losing to conference champion Millersville by two points on a last-second shot, to Division I Rider by four points and to LeMoyne by one point. 2s,,, Se 6349116 'Wh Q, an dx M' 1' Al, iw 'W OM' llIIlI Y go . .., W' ' I Q, , , i 3 , , W q If 3 . .1 ' gif 'V I www W KW , x 'rvwife W: A 'Q 4. 'F BASEBALL l25-18l The Warriors set a school record for most baseball victories in a season - 25, win the Pennsylvania Conference Northern Division championship, and finish as run- nerup in the PC championship playoff during an outstanding 1985 baseball campaign. After a 2-3 PC start, Coach Glenn Hayes' baseballers win 11 straight conference games, sweeping doubleheaders over all three division rivals - Bloomsburg, Mansfield and Lock Haven. They win their first playoff game over California, 6-3, but then lose to West Chester, 11-8. They battle back, however, beating both Ship- l pensburg, 5-4, and Westchester, 2-1, before a final game 4-0 loss in a third meeting against West Chester. The Warriors have seven .300 hitters as the team posts an overall .319 batting mark. Outfielder Bob Siemon hit .367 followed by Bishop .340, Tischauser .333, Vyskocil .319, Becker -.318 and designated hitter-outfielder Billy Hill .306. In the NCAA Division II tournament played at West Chester, the Warriors lose back-to-back games to Ship- pensburg, 7-2, and Valdosta, Ga., 16-3. 1 l 30 gi We Af . gl . i . 11,90 P01 .,.. . it 6 5 2 Q WOMENS GYMNASTICS K2-119 The record might not be outstanding, but the individual improvement shown by members of the ESU Women s Gym nastics team take place during the 1984- 85 season. First-year Linda Renehan has an extremely young team with only one senior among the eventual 14-letter winners. The team improves its score almost con tinually throughout the season and hits a high of 158.10 points in the final dual meet. Brygier and Diana Outhouse both top 31 points in the all-around in the meet. Of the five losses, four are to league champion George Mason with only one of these defeats, however, in straight games. The team beats Penn State for the first time in seven years before a large enthusiastic crowd in the Koehler Fieldhouse, 15-7, 15-10, 9-15, 15-8. Another major win is scored over nationally-ranked Ohio State in the finals of the Edinboro Tournament. Two members of our faculty and staff truly must be recognized here as people who made the difference. Both Colleen Fleming and James Chamberlain died this past year, but their individual contributions ensure lasting places for them in ESU's collective heart. Colleen Fleming worked as a secretary in the communications Center at ESU and as Coordinator of the Deb-ette Baton Corps of Stroudsburg. Colleen is remembered by all who knew her as a warm, caring, and con- scientious woman whose commitment to her fellow humans made her an invaluable friend and helper. ESU has since set up the Colleen Fleming Award in her memory for those students who display the qualities that Colleen exemplified throughout her life. Dr. James Chamberlain was chairman of professional physical educa- tion here at ESU, and was also active in many community activities in- cluding the YMCA and his own canoe rental business. In addition, he was COHCQH Fleming the director of ESU's Pocono Mountain Triathlon from 1983 to 1984, and was the former director of the YMCA summer day camp. In 1972, Chamberlain was voted the Outstanding Young Educator by the Pocono Mountain Jaycees, and in 1982 was proud recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. In all of his many and varied ac- tivities and hobbies, Jim was thought of, and is still remembered, as a leader, a go-getter, and also as a warm and sincere man whose ambition and devotion were more for his community than for himself. .,'k,',y,f ,VIE f yi ,f a -,win Dr. James Chamberlain fleftl with Frann Vettor and Dr. Robert Sutton 230 We, the editors of the Stroud 1985, proudly present this book to you, the senior class of l85 and the entire student body of ESU. We hope this book accurately reflects the hopes, dreams, and realities of you, the students who Mmake the difference. Like all those that came before, this yearbook has had its changes, revisions, problems, and setbacks. Many times we reviled this book to ourselves and each other, but despite the severe lack of staff and the never-met deadlines, we hope this book has, never- theless, resulted in a creative compilation of the best of life in 1985. Since no book can ever be produced without the help of a few very special people, we would like to first and foremost thank Chuck Feiner, our advisor, for his infinite time, patience, and energy. For you, Chuck, who are leaving ESU as this book goes to print, we ope that in years to come you will be able to hail the Stroud '85 as your greatest triumph at ESU. Thank you, and best luck to you t Ramapo. We will miss you enormously. ext we would like to thank Bernadette Pesock, our only other staff member, for all the miles she travelled over this campus identi- ying people in our thousands of photos, and also for all the brainstorming she did to write so much of our copy. Bern, you are riceless! hanks are also due to Donna LaBar and Carole Reilly for all their typing and general assistance, e are also indebted to Merin Studios for the fine quality photos they shot and developed for us. att Lynott also deserves recognition for his knowledge and guidance, and for all the inspiring posters he gave us. inally, on a lighter note, we would like to thank each other, since there were times when we fbarelyl kept each other sane tenough finish the bookl through sheer determination, perseverence, and stubborness. So, here's to me and here's to you, and when we eet again in the '4real world, let us never speak again of the Stroud '85 without a grin and a chortle.
