Born in Ami- tyville, Long island, N.Y., on June 11, 1934, he was the son of the late Robert Marshall Howell and Alma Olga Maass. He grew up in western Penn- sylvania, in Kittanning, Ruffsdale and Greensburg, and then returned to Long Island as a teenager. He graduated from Sewanhaka High School, served in and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, completed his Bachelor of Arts at Gettsyburg College in 1959, received his Master of Arts from the University of Minnesota in 1970, and his ABD tall but disseratiom from New York University, 1980. Rob was an associate professor of theatre at East Stroudsburg Univer- sity from 1965 to 1994. He began his theatrical career with the Lutheran Foundation for Religious Drama in New York City. He acted in more than 100 plays, including community theater, off-off Broadway and summer stock. His favorite roles included Becket in Murder in the Cathedral, George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Dr. Martin Dysart in Equus and Father Farley in Mass Appeal. Venues included the Cherry Lane Opera House, Playhouse by the River, Shawnee Theater and ESU. He and his former wife were instrumental in the formation of the Phoenix Players, a community theater group. He directed more than 100 plays, including The Crucible, Godspell, Streets of New York, The Glass Menagerie, Blues for Mr. Charlie, A Dream Play, A Streetcar Named Desire, Rashomon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Fiddler on the Roof, East Lynne, Three-Penny Opera, and the list goes on. After his retirement, his love of the- ater continued, and he both acted and directed. He was the voice of George Eastman in a PBS documentary. Rob was an avid gardener and was included in the Monroe County Garden Club tour. He loved to travel, immers- ing himself in different cultures. Rob had a passion for languages and spoke fluent German, studied Italian during his year-long sabbatical in Italy, and navigated French and Spanish with aplomb. While living in Reggio di museum. He did extensive genealogical research on his family in the United States and Germany, visiting rural churches and reading baptismal re- cords. His research extended back to the 15005. These efforts produced a detailed book of his ancestry encom- passing not only his immediate family, but the families of his siblings and grandehildren. He was a deeply spiritual human being and a founding member of what is now The Unitarian-Universalist Fel- lowship of the Poconos, being actively involved until his death. Preceding him in death was his for- mer wife, Joan Puknat Howell, mother of his two children. Surviving are his partner of 38 years, Anne Tiracchia of Stroudsburg; two children: Suzanne Howell Bennett of Brandon, Vt., and Robert Jason Howell and his wife, Christine, of Methuen, Mass; Anne's children: Nicholas D. Ray and his wife, , Helene, of Roquefort-les-Pins, France; and Lucia M. Ray of Lund, Sweden; his sisters: Jeannette Potts of York, and Joy Worontzoff and her husband, Edward, of Waynesboro, Va.; his brother, Theodore Howell and his wife, Rebecca, of Flat Rock, N.C.; his grand- children: Olivia Alma Gaissert and Nathaniel Robert Gaissert of Brandon, Vt.; Robert Liam Howell, Siobhan Delia Howell and Owen Marshall Howell of Methuen, Mass.; and Alexander D. Ray and Marianne 0. Ray of Roquefort-Ies- Pins, France; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful father and will be remembered with love by his family, as well as by the many people whose lives he touched. The memorial service will held at 1pm. Saturday, April 12, at Cecilia Cohen Recital Hall, Fine and Perform- ing Arts Center of East Stroudsburg University. Officiating will be the Rev. Kim D. Wilson of the Unitarian-Univer- salist Fellowship of the Poconos. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Although: the Warriors re- fused a post-season NAIA bowl bid, they were hailed as one of the strongest PSCAC teams ever, with defensive halfback Barry Roach receiving Little All-American recognition. A sad note was added at the end of the season when head coach Gregory ac- cepted a position as assistant head coach at the Naval Academy and Coach Bill Lewis accepted the head backfield coaching posi- tion at the University of Pittsburgh. Miss Albright's team showed a great deal of spirit and desire. Ten players were selected to play in the Intercollegiate Field Hockey Tournament held at Drexel. McMasters. 14-9 Coach Clyde Witman's matmen moved into the national limelight this year by placing sev- enth in the NCAA, behind such teams as Oklaho- ma State and Oklahoma. AlI-American Bobby Guzzo won the NAIA championship in his class. Guzzo and teammates Chet Dalgewicz and Gary Cook all won state championships leading the Warriors to a second place finish behind highly tauted Lock Haven in the PSCAC tournament which was hosted for the first time by ESSC. Standout performances were also turned in by John Hopkins, Jan Dutt, Ned Bushong and Billy Elder. A swim team of tough competitors The Mermen splashed to a finish with a split record season of five wins and five losses. Under the coaching of Charles Reese and the watchful eye of Art Stockin, the men laid the groundwork for future seasons of victory. Brown, Barbara Mc- Gonigle and Wendy Pfaffhausen were the triad which served as the backbone of the 1966 squad. Each of these girls placed fourth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships on March 12. The team compiled 26 points to take third place in this meet which culmi- nated the season.
