The class of I953 wishes To pay i'rs deepesr respecls lo Mr. Arlhur L. Helmes, who passed away on June 23, l952, afier serving as business manager ai ESSTC for rhe lasi fhiriy- Two of his sixly years. Mr. Helmes served in 'rhis capaciry primarily for The beneiirs which he could render +o lhe college and io all of Hs srudenis. ln. his own way, Mr. Helmes did whaiever he could 'ro make' ESSTC a beHer place for all of us. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 25, l884, Mr. Helmes ariended 'rhe public schools ihere. He conrinued his educarion in Lynbrook and la'rer graduared from The Brooklyn College of Business. The business experiences of Mr. Helmes were many and diverse and included employmenr wi'rh 'rhe Cenlral-American Trading Company of New York Ciiy, Jrhe law offices of Dorman and Dana, New York Ci'ry, and wirh 'rhe Delaware, Lackawanna and Wesiern Railroad where he served in Jrhe capaciry of audiior. During rhe Firsi' World War, Mr. Helmes was employed as foreman of 'rhe Alpha Porrland Cemenr Company. La'rer he served as Assisrani +o 'rhe Manager wirh fhe Housing Division of Ingersoll Rand Company. He also operared a real esiaie business of his own, served as Super- infendenl' of rhe Srewarr Confracring Company, and represenied The Firsf Naiional Bank of Srroudsburg and rhe Scranron Trusi Company as borh Treasurer and Assisianl' Manager ai a large resorr hoiel in rhe Poconos. In I92O Mr. Helmes became Business Man- ager af ESSTC, which, ai ihaf fime, was s+ill a Siare Normal School. Ai Jrhe 'lime of his deaih, Mr. Helmes was a member oi The Baprisr Temple, in Brooklyn: Barger Lodge 325, F. and A. M. of Sfroudsburgg a charier member oi Lehigh Consisrory, A.A.S.R. of Allenrowng a pas? presideni' of 'rhe Sirouds- burg Kiwanis Club: a member of rhe execuiive board of 'rhe Monroe Counry Crippled Children's and Adull's Associaiion: and also a member of rhe execuiive board of lhe Monroe Couniy Chapler of fhe American Red Cross. Mr. Helmes was a 'rireless and conscieniious worker-one who pui' all of his heari and soul info his work for rhe good of all concerned. Dr. Naegle holds degrees in public school and college adminisTraTion Trom Three universi- Ties. T-le earned his Ph.B. and A.B. degrees aT Syracuse UniversiTy, an A.M. Trom Columbia and a Ph.D. Trom New York UniversiTy. ATTer buT Two years as direcTor OT Teacher Training aT EasT STroudsburg he was Then ap- poinTed To The posiTion OT direcTor OT exTensiOn work. Dr. BreiTwieser was named To The posiTion oT direcTor oT The EasT STroudsburg LaboraTory School in l926. FourTeen years laTer. in I94O, he became DirecTor oT Teacher Training and Place- menT, The posiTion he held unTil his reTiremenT. ATTer receiving his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees Trom lndiana UniversiTy, Dr. BreiTwieser began Teaching in I904. He also conTinued his sTudies by doing graduaTe work aT boTh Colum- bia UniversiTy and New York UniversiTy.
