Peter Stuyvesant. In this very village lived a simple, good- natured fellow, Rip Van Winkle. He was a kind neighbor, a friendly gossip, a true ne'er-do-weII, and an obedient henpecked husband. The great blemish in Rip's composition was an in- supetable aversion to all kinds of profitable labor. It dogs possess the same characteristics, W011, Rip's sole domestic adherent, was of the same make-up as his master. Dame Van Winkle regarded them as companions in idleness, and both suffered under the lashing tongue of this termagant shrew. Therefore, Rip and Wolf often took to the woods to escape Dame Van Winkle's severe I45 0 'W a. JOSEPH F. NOONAN. Post Office 15 In the course of one of these escapist movements, Rip journeyed to one of the highest points of the Kaatskill Mountains. As he was about to descend, he was summoned by a short, square-buiIt 01d fellow with thick bushy hair and a grizzled heard. On approaching Rip, he made signs indicating his desire for assistance in carrying a stout keg which he bore on his shoulders. Rip complied with his usual a1acn'ty, and they ascended through a small ravine into a natural amphitheatre. On entering the hollow, Rip discerned a company of odd-Iookz'ng personages, similar to his companion, dressed in the style of antique Dutch or Flemish. As a result of Rip's appearance on the scene, they desisted from their game of ninepins, formed a semi-circle, and proceeded to judge Rip in a manner Ie- sembh'ng that of weH-conducted QSTM: M h Student Sena te Left to right: R. The little men was hospitable enough so that Rip's awe and apprehension finally subsided. As he watched them empty the contents of the keg t the same one which he so laboriously helped to transporti into large tlagons, he suddenly realized he was very thirsty. To quench his parched throat, he ventured to taste the beverage, which he found had much of the flavor of excellent Hollands. Being extremely thirsty, he naturally repeated the draught. One taste provoked another and soon his natural quuaciousness overrode his anxiety. He noted that his once we11-oiled fowh'ng piece was now an antiquated firelock, his dog had disappeared, and his beard had grown a foot long. Fear of Dame Van WinkIe's remonstrances caused him to hurry back to the village. As he approached, he met many people, but none Whom he knew. They stared at him as though he were an oddity.
