HOCKEY Wifhifhe beginning of a new sporfs year came fhe beginning of a new varsify sporf for women-fhe fasf, excifing game of field hockey. Many aspiranfs reporfed fo pracfices for several weeks, and from fhis group were chosen fiffeen girls fo journey fo Prospecl' Park in Brooklyn, N. Y., fo encounfer fhe fasf, experienced New York Universify squad. These fiffeen were capfain and goalie Kiffy Kaufmann, a senior who was safisfied because she had occasion fo defend her goal only once in fhe,enfire game-Kay Diehl, anofher senior who played a speedy game as leff wing--Alice Sampson, a Savage fransfer, leff inside-Rufh Woodhouse, also a Savage fransfer, who smashed fhrough fhe defense from her cenfer forward posifion fo fally one poinf-Anne Bukowski, a senior and righf inside, who scored fhe ofher counfer for S.T.C.-Janef Dailey, fhe speedy junior who played in righf wing posifion- Gene VanVlief, Gerda Ullrich, and Naomi Reed, respecfively junior, sophomore, and freshman halfbacks who broke up fhe offensive plays of N.Y.U., and beaufifully backed up fheir own forward line-Marion Widmayer and Laura Brown, bofh Savage frans- fers, who kepf fhe New York feam from really fhreafening ourgoal more fhan once or fwice during fhe enfire confesf. Carried as reserves fo fhis game were Norma Henning, wing-Rufh Borman, halfback-Claudia Cooke, fullback-and Olive Aansfoos, goalie. The final score was 2-0 in favor of The Zimbar eleven, which seems fo inidicafe fhaf in fhe nexf few years, under Miss Zimbar's effecfive fufelage, Sfroudsburg should develop oufsfanding feams in fhis new field. ln addifion fo 'rhese fiffeen members, fhe ofher girls who confinued fo work hard dur- ing fhe season were given an opporfunify fo see acfion in fhe game wifh our college alumnae. ln fhis baffle Kay Diehl scored fhree goals, and Anne Bukowski scored fhe fourfh counfer for fhe college, while Norma Henning, playing for fhe alumnae, scored fheir lone fally. Mildred Wood, fhe efficienf manager of fhe group, assisfed in making The season a success. Alfhough eleven ouf of fhe filfeen members of fhe feam who fraveled fo New York are members of fhis year's graduafing class, a sufficienf number of fhis year's recruifs remains fo acf as a core around which nexf year's squad will be formed. 27 '

These are The men who Take The bruises and bumps To prepare The varsiTy To meef iTs schedule in besT form, asking noThing in reTurn buT ci chance To make a place Tor Themselves on The varsiTy squad in anofher year. Alfhough The Junior Warriors did noT make such an impressive record-losing Two games and Tying one-much poTenTial varsiTy maTerial was discovered in These games. The Red and Black J.V.'s iourneyed To Wilkes-Barre To play Their season opener wiTh a sfrong Wyoming Seminary Team. Our club losT To Sem, 27-9. Veneroso's Touchdown plus an exTra poinT and a safeTy accounTed for The J.V.'s nine poinTs. The passing combinafion of Weiler To Pasko clicked for many subsTanTial gains. The E.S.S.T.C. J.V. fooTball men, showing much improvemenf over Their previous game, lasT a close baHle To Penningfon Prep by a I3-I2 score. Weiler accounfed for one Touchdown by an 80-yard broken field run, and Geroni, flashy Muhlenberg Transfer, accounTecl for The second score. The concluding game of The season resulfed in a scoreless Tie wiTh a scrappy NaTional Farm School eleven. A sTeady downpour made boTh running and passing very difficulf. The Junior Warriors played hard buf lacked The necessary power To push The ball across The final whiTe sTripe To gain a covefecl six-poinfer. 26

SOCCER .. ln The Tall, The enTire STroudsburg viciniTy be- comes soccer conscious. Mr. DeNike's eleven is no excepTion. Each year a new Team makes a debuT, and each Team seems To be as good as The previous one. This year, a glance back over The season shows ThaT The Red and Black booTers Tinished wiTh Tour wins, Two losses, and one Tie. To inauguraTe The season, E.S.S.T.C, bowe-d To an excepTionally sTrong club Trom CorTland, N. Y., 2-I. The baTTle was close and exciTing. Davies, a wing, scored The lone Tally Tor The DeNike men in The Third period, while CorTland scored in The second quarTer and again in The TourTh wiTh buT Two minuTes remaining. UndaunTed by The TirsT deTeaT, The Warrior booTers regisTered a decisive win, The TirsT oT The '4-I season. The vicTim was lThaca College. While The New Yorkers were held scoreless, Barber and OberholTzer accounTed Tor Three poinTs. In The second quarTer, Barber senT a driving kick Through The opponenTs' goal, and in The TourTh period The Warriors displayed Their powerful oTTensive drive by scoring Two goals, boTh by OberholTzer. The 3-O win over lThaca inspired The Team To go on a scoring spree againsT Bloomsburg. The E.S.S.T.C. soccer boys deTeaTed Their opponenTs by The overwhelming score oT 7-O, The highesT soccer score recorded in This college since I93l. OloerholTzer, Davies, Hammes, Lash, and Kelly all chalked up one poinT, while Barber accounTed Tor Two. Coach DeNike used TwenTy men in This game in an eTTorT To reduce The scoring, buT each subsTiTuTe seemed To be as good as The man he replaced. ' ATTer This glorious vicTory, The S.T.C. winning sTreak was halTed by a more experienced soccer club Trom Rider College. The driving 'power and speed of These boys was responsible Tor Their 3-O vicTory over our hand-TighTing Team. Our Team succeeded in holding The Panzer booTers To a scoreless Tie on a weT, muddy Tield which made iT almosT impossible To conTrol The ball. Two exTra Tive-minuTe periods were played, buT To no avail-The score remained O-O. Once more The Red and Black displayed a powerTul oTTensive drive by deTeaTing a sTrong SeTon Hall Team by a 2-O score. Barber scored The TirsT goal in The iniTial period, and Hammes booTed one inTo The neT in The Third quarTer. The Tinal game oT The season, wiTh Lock Haven Teachers, showed The True calibre oT The STrouds- burg Team. The Lock Haven goalie was bom- barded wiTh all sorTs oT drives aT The goal, and
