In M emoriam To the memory of Mr. Harold Lee, teacher and counselor of students for thirty-seven years, we the class of 1969 dedicate our yearbook. Few men ever achieve in their lifetime the recognition and respect of students and community realized by Mr. Lee. He attended Stroudsburg High School from 1922-1926, and was one of the first five students elected to the Minsi Chapter of the National Honor Society. Upon graduation from high school, he entered Lafayette College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Physics, graduating Cum Laude in 1930. For the next twelve years Mr. Leetaught at Northhampton Junior High School, during which time he organized even- ing Adult Education classes for Ukrainian residents. In 1937 he was elected to the national honorary fraternity, Kappa Phi Kappa. For twenty-five years Mr. Lee taught at East Stroudsburg High School. He earned his Masters Degree in Secondary Administration from Lehigh University. In 1946 while studying at Lehigh, in addition to teaching at E-Burg, he served as an assistant professor at East Stroudsburg State College. Mr. Lee will long be remembered for his many services at East Stroudsburg. As Senior Class advisor since 1952, adviser to the Business Staff of the Yearbook, and to several other studetit activities, Mr. Lee motivated and inspired students toward excellence. We the class of 1969 are appreciative of Mr. Lee's beneficial services, unselfish contributions, and inspiring examples of fine citizenship. It was but yesterday We met in a dream. You have sung to me in my aloneness, and I of your longings have built a tower in the sky. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and We must part. David Win MacDonough January 28, 2014 David Win MacDonough, 62, lifelong resident of Marshalls Creek, passed away at his home Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014. Our beloved David was born ' , to Richard Caroll and Marian Elise , MacDonough. The ' second of three children, he grew up working in the family business, contributing to his community and exploring the village with his love of hunting and fishing. . , e went on to earn 5 degree an meet the love of his life, Susan K. MacDonough, at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt. They were married in the winter of 1973 and the devoted, best friends shared 41 blessed years of marriage together. ' David was raised in the Marshalls Creek General Store, also known as E.D. Huffman and Sons. His deep pride In family and blind faith in community, along with his 50-plus years running the store, made him a staple in the community. Whether he was running the store, plowing a neighbor's yard or putting out fires with the Marshalls Creek Fire Company, David was always right at home in Marshalls Creek. David's sense of community led him to serve as chief, assistant chief and various other positions with the Marshalls Creek Fire Company for more than 50 years. He served as an emergency medical technician tEMD, was on the Smithfield Planning Com- mission, and was a member of the Elks Lodge and various other organizations within the area. David was 3 32nd Degree, Tall Cedars, brother in the fraternal order of the Masons. The only thing above David's sense of community was the love and pride he had for his family. He was head over heels in love with Susan every day of their lives together. He was a proud fa- ther who was at every sporting event, play and concert his three children were involved in. His life was his fam- ily, and he showed it each and every day. He was so pleased with who his children had grown to be as parents, community members and profession- als. He is deeply loved, respected and admired by his children for his selfless, unfaltering strength and love. His pride extended to his five beauti- ful grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and dear- est friends. He always loved that the family kept growing. David was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Caroll and Marian Elise; his mother- and fatherein-law, Kathryn and Alexander Keefe; and his sister-in-law, MaryAnn Roucoulet. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Susan; his children, David Alexander and his wife, Melissa, John Pearsall and his wife, Jessica, and Sara Elizabeth and her husband, Michael Civitello; his brother, Richard L. MacDonough and his wife, Sharon; his sister, Sally ' Daigneault and her husband, Tom; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Mi- chael Keefe and his wife, Janet, Ronald Roocoulet, Tim Keefe and his wife, Pam,.Kelly Keefe and Kate Rosset. The team, however, was not disheartened, for much fine playing and good teamwork were displayed on the field. East Burg. football is assured of an outstand- ing team in the coming season if this year's underclassmen continue in the development of the skills they have exhibited in 1968-69. The Junior Varsity squad finished the season with a record of 6 wins, 2 losses. George Miller, Jim Ren- froe, and Bob Beck showed unusual playing ability. With 4 wins and 2 losses, the Junior High football team also claimed a good record and a prom- ising position in the future of foot- ball at E. Burg. Our men behind the scenes. The 1968-1969 Varsity Basketball team played well for the entire season and finished with a record of 11-11, the best record of any Cavalier Varsity team since 1956. In addition to this accomplishment, the team, under the direction of Coach Chic Daniels, displayed the best rec- ord in the county, thereby securing the Frank McGuire Trophy. Although the teams accomplishments were the result of a united effort, second year lettermen Matt Hood and Tom Kishpaugh deserve special recognition. Girls , Basketball T eam lst ROW: V. Stoffer, C. The team included: one Senior letter- man, Gary Boushell; two Freshman lettermen, John Sibley and Steve Fahl; and two Sophomore lettermen, Joe Viechnicki and Bill Lee. With six veteran golfers returning next year the record of the 1970 Golf team will certainly equal, if not surpass, the fine record of 1969. BARRY BOUSHELL - Senior JOE VIECHNICKI 4M KNEELING: D. Wrestling East-Burg wrestlers finished the season with a record of 3 wins and 10 defeats. Coached by Mr. J. Roy Miller, the young team worked hard and there were many exciting matches. Despite outstanding players such as the seniors: Rick Roth, Bob Jones, Bill LaBar, and Ken Kunkle, a young, inexperienced team, shallow in numbers, was unable to post a winning season. Next year, with the return of seven of the twelve starters, and eight lettermen, E-Burg fans can look forward to a much better wrestling season. ROW 1: B. Smith, G. Maioriello, D. Davies, D. The 68'-69' Cavalier swimmers finished the season with a record of 4 wins and 10 losses. This record equals their best previous team effort, that of the '67-'68 season. Many school records were broken this year: Captain Dan Wilkins in the breast stroke, John Ro- mansky in the back stroke, Wayne Dippre in the 50 yard freestyle and the two relay teams. The medley relay team consisted of Dan Wilkins, Rich Davies, Steve Fahl, and Wayne Dippre. The 400 yard freestyle relay team consisted of Ron Romansky, Wayne Dippre, George Welbers, and John Ro- This year captain Dan Wilkins took 3rd place at Districts which qualified him for state finals held at the Pennsylvania State Univer- sity. Dan is the first person ever to make state final competition in any sport at East Burg. He is also the first swimmer ever to place at district competition. This is a great tribute to our school as well as Dan. This year many fine senior swimmers are leaving. Next year's team has true promise and great talent. We can expect better sea- sons and better teams in the future. 'Wh!1;-- KNEELING: J. Polinski, K. Flanagan, J. Ogden, B. Harris, B. Gordon, K. Kunkle, E. Bzik, T. Bowman, D. Ehrlich. STANDING: D. Although the single victory was against Salisbury early in the campaign, our trackmen put out a great deal of effort throughout the season. Stan Mosher, a steady performer for the track team, received the Most Valuable Player Award. Student Council promot Twh 3ng Senior H igh THE SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL 1968-1969 at East-Burg was a year of great strides in many areas. No organization, though, made reater advances nor deserves more credit for the school's pro ess than the enior High StudentCouncil. The Counc1 improved school spirit through the introduction of a school mascot and the chartering of pep buses to away games. The Student Coun- cil's homecoming activities, which included an outdoor pep rally, parade, and dance, brought school spirit and respect to new-hei hts. While initiating many projects for the first time, t 6 Council retained man of its former successes, considerably improved. The Variety Show, for instance, entertained students and teachers for a double period. Al- , ' t thou h the Council was late in sponsoring assemblies, the few that were held were met with great student interest. 6 Council spent considerable time in re-evaluating many policies, and revising the Student Council's Consti- tution. Finally, in June, the Constitution was ratified by the student body. The only Student Council fund-raising activity was the highly successful program of summer dances. The Coun- cil allocate much of these funds for a monthly Activity Perio for Senior High students. The program, both original and unique, offered activities of recreation, discussion, and instruction in a wide variety of special areas each month. While many deserve credit for the Council's success, some deserve acclamations. Miss Georgia Russopulos, in her second year as Council Advisor, was responsible for and instrumental in any success. The delegates recognized and showed their appreciation for Miss Russopulos' service to the students when, in a final assembly, they presented her with a plaque. T T T T T T The members of the ,Senior High Student Council 1968-1969 will be favorably remembered for countless programs T T and events; but most importantl , they, like the Class of '69 itself, will be recalled for a helpful spirit of student initiative and involvement bene 1cia1 to all. t3 , :ny worthwhile projects PRESIDENT - Carol Michaels VICE-PRESIDENT - Mark Kleinle SECRETARIES - Cindy Ritter Cortes. - Amy VemIe TREAS URER - Dan Blewitt Miss Russopulos with plaque presented to her by the council. The Junior High Student Council under the able leadership of Cathy Bachman put on some of the best dances that East-Butg has ever seen. They collected lots of food and other items for the needy family drive at Christmas time. They helped collect money for a dinner for the foot- ball team. All in all it was a very good year for the council. OFFICERS: S. Fahl, B. Larisch, C. Bachman, B. Voss. ll9 Executive Committees 1 SENIOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: TOP: SITTING: D. Wilkins, D. Blewitt, C. Stu Pollan, student photographer, worked closely with Mr. Levi,. the school's professional photographer in compiling a wide variety of pictures for the staff's use. Under the able direction of Mr. Snyder, adviso'r, and Gary Huffman, manager, the business staff aided immensely in obtaining advertisements to pay for this year- book. We thank our local businessmen for their overwhelming support in helping to finance the book. Talented Gary Jacobs and Julie McMahon composed write-ups and captions precisely and i interestingly. The seminar which we attended in Wilkes Barre benefited the underclassmen by supplying them with new ideas, which will be used in next year's book. Activities included an outdoor pep rally, a pre-game parade, and a dance. Individual classes and school organizations entered decorative floats in the parade. The two best floats in competition were the Senior Class Float and the Student Council Float. The Sophomore Class Float received a most honorable mention. The homecoming queen, Debra Eilenberger, was crowned at the dance. Her attendants were Renee Walter, and Stephanie Read. Although the football team lost the game, the high spirited East-Burg students participating in the homecoming activities left no doubt as to which school was number one. Twelve Angry Jurors was originally written as a television play in the early fifties under the title of Twelve Angry Men. The setting for the drama was the jury room where twelve jurors were deciding the fate of an eighteen year old boy accused of killing his father. The talented cast did a fine job of keeping us all on the edges of our seats. lI-Il-ll-lll-II--Illl-I-I-I-I-I-lt -I---I-llI-I-IllllllllI-IIIIII l28 Gary Huffman, what did you say? Some of the principal roles were: Alice Ann Sedgewick, played by Kathy Lesoine; Penny Bollard as Grace Sedgewick; Willard Sedgewick, played by Mark Kleinle; and Bruce Remz as Edward Mott. The play was well-attended and enjoyed by all. If THE STUCK POT was any measure of the performing ability of the Junior Class, we will be looking forward to the Senior Play of 1970. Birds, I've got a plan. l3l Something Patriotic This is a Great Country The Majorettes and Dance Band presented their annual revue on Saturday, February 15. The theme, This is a Great Country, was brought out well by several outstanding numbers: Music Man, a solo by Debbie Van Horn; Only in America, done by feature twirlers Marae Weiss and Pat Snyder; Deb Sommer and Deb Bergman in Oklahoma ; Mari Blewitt and Brenda Detrick in Washington Square ; Carlene Neal, Laurie Randall, and Bobbi Michaels twirling to Born Free. The Dance Band was the backbone of the show, pro- viding an enjoyable atmosphere for the laudable performance. The last Majorette Show for Seniors Deb Van Horn and Carlene Neal The Great Sounds of a Great Heritage Junior High presents - Music In 1969 the Junior High Music Festival was a credit not only to the participating students but the whole Music department as well. The Junior Band, conducted by Mr. John Casagrande, performed many difficult compositions quite well as did the chorus, directed by Mrs. Jane Donovan. The theme of the annual Coronation Dance this year was Love. It was sponsored by the Jr. High Student Council and was a big success. The n'Ynth grade king and queen were George Miller and Sue Bramhall. The eighth grade couple was Bob Staples and Theresa Holland. Representing the seventh grade were Carol Butz and Dean Smith. The music was provided by the Sound Spectrum. I33 Seniors US F aculty Faculty Edges Seniors 80-55 The highlight of the basketball season came after it had officially ended. This great sports event was the faculty- senior game. Although the faculty's score was higher, was it really their victory? It is rumored that several faculty players were admitted into the hospital the next day! Good try seniors! Our very own senior male cheerleaders entertained the crowd with their various daring feats. Seniors Smash Faculty; 5-3 On a warm day in June, an overly confident faculty baseball team had their spirits crushed as an athletically superior senior team scored five runs to their three. ngwmmaw I35 April F 00lery The Tijuana Medlers The Variety Show, sponsmed by the Senior High Student Council, was a refresh- ing change from the daily curriculum. It featured original compositions and sketches, folk music, and rock, a strip show and clever dialogue. The annual variety show encourages student talent and seems to grow better each year. This year the vocal numbers excelled those of the past, as did I the instrumentals and the skits.
