Soon, however, with the help of Mr. Robert Burrows, class advisor, officers were elected and plans were made to build the treasury. Participating in athletic events, chorus, and band, and other activities in the high school gave the Sophomores the valued feeling of belonging From the class of '59 came several important additions to our football, basketball and baseball teams. The Sophomores were always ready to help with any job that came along, and they did it well too! FOQTBALL Under the able coaching of jack Kist, the 1956-57 edition of East Stroudsburg High Football team, contrary to pre-season predictions, provided the local fans with its share of wins and close games. Spearheaded by Co-captains Roger Strouse and Frank Lupin, the fellows displayed tremendous desire and terrific spirit in going through their ten- game schedule. Although they were, very definitely, the underdog going into the Battle of the Boroughs, the team very nearly upset its arch rival from across the bridge. Brimer. are RQ BASKETBALL With Doug Schoonover as the new basketball coach, a small but eager group of candidates reported for practice and strove earnestly to uphold East Stroudsburgs colors. Though the over-all record of six games won and 14 lost is not too impressive, still there were bright spots in the season's campaign. Captain King Beers, scoring 40 points in the game against Coplay, succeeded in breaking the school record and wound up as the fourth highest scorer in the Lehigh-Northampton League. Guided by the Whistle of joan Marsh. tbe purple and white clad sixteen strutted for the rapt spec- tators at the Hellertown game. At Halloween the Drill Team performed to the strains of Little Brown jug and sixteen hats danced on the heads of the pert members. Cheers arose when the limp forms rattled to the eerie beat of Dry Bones. The Drill Team came forward at Thanksgiving with the mark of professionals. Loud applause sprang from the crowd as the season ended with a high step and a swirl of skirts. PEP BAND in small packages. may well be said of the pep band, for what they latk in numbers they more than compensate in vivacious spirit. It is they who play at pep rallies. and follow the teams to many games away from home. They are the ones that give spark to the cheers that spur our football players on to new victories. Their spirited music is heard at many spontaneous occasions. in- cluding ticket selling drives. parades. and the an- ticipated victory over a most dangerous rival, Stroudsburg. Q: YEARBOOK STAFF Planning the layouts and making the yearbook pleasing to look at were the jobs of the Make-up Staff of the yearbook. The Literary Staff did the actual writing of the book. Meeting deadlines, writing senior comments, and compiling information on all the clubs kept this staff in a happy state of turmoil throughout the en- tire year. Financing the Yearbook was the task undertaken by the Business Staff. Through the fall they worked hard getting advertisements, and running the con- cession stand. In the spring they began to sell sub- scriptions and ended the year with a very successful patron drive. Mr. Eckert, GIRLS AND BOYS COUNCILS To help every girl and boy choose L1 suitable career and to help him solve his everyday problems were the chief aims of these councils. In order to do this the Councils established a very effective guidance program. The Girls' Council, together with the Boys' Council and the Student Council, scheduled and presented four guidance assemblies spaced throughout the year. They then carefully planned Z1 career conference that would appeal to everyones interests and tastes. These busybodies certainly deserve the praise of the student body for their splendid work. Such membership is an honor and a trust given only to those who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and dependability. YOUTH OF THE MONTH The distinction of being chosen Youth of Month is one to which every senior as- pires. In bestowing this award, the Exchange Club recognizes outstanding service to the school and community. A certain feeling of respect and awe filled the student body. These were the members of the National Honor Society. To achieve this coveted honor a student must show a definite quality of leadership, exemplary sports- manship, a high degree of scholarship, continued serv- ice, and good citizenship. The club, comprised of senior girls, offered each member a chance to familiarize herself with the instruments which she will probably use in her chosen profession. The members, through social activities, shared many happy and enjoyable mo- ments together as well as gaining experience and information. Under the able supervision of Mrs. DeWitt, Miss Black and competent officers, the club members again proved to be valu- RIFLE CLUB Do you know how to shoot a rifle? Can you make a bull's eye? If so, you should be a member of the rifle club? if not, you might like to join it to learn. Every Wednesday night this small band of distinguished riflemen, under the direction of Mr. Schaller, meet in the cellar of the school to try their luck at tearing apart their targets. Although there is a lot of noise and a lot of ammunition is used, it is usually the target that is victorious. Those of the better shots strive to raise themselves in the rankings of the National Rifle Association, whereas those who are poorer shots are just satisfied in hitting the target. ln the end, however, whether expert or beginner, there is much fun to be found in learning about and shooting rifles. able assets of the school. TRI-HI-Y After being inducted into the Tri-Hi-Y in September, the new members were initiated in October. Through the fall they worked at the concession stand during the football games and held bake sales. The proceeds were soon put to use in making up Thanksgiving baskets and collecting toys for Christmas. Several dances, a mother-daughter party. and a banquet at the end of the year completed the social activities of the club. During the year they held several religious programs and thus completed the Tri-Hi-Y aims of Welfare Service, Religion, Education. LIBRARY CLUB A cheery smile and a willingness to be helpful are the chief attributes which are representative of the girls who belong to the Library club. L'nder the guidance of Miss Lesoine, these girls assist the students to select and check out books. With ever ready assistante and competent efficiency, they help the student to find reference books as well as fiction and periodicals. These girls also issue overdue slips and Social activity. and mend and repair damaged books. The band braved parades in the rain and under sweltering sung it marched in muddy fields and bitter cold, to keep the spectators' spirits high at football games. Wfhatever the conditions the marching band made a truly spec- tacular showing for East Stroudsburg High School. Concert work started in November, and the band practiced with new fervor all winter. No admission was charged at the annual spring concert, because Mr. Wfiedinmyer, Mr. Zellner and the band members wished to express in this way their appreciation, to the Band Mothers and to the community, for their efforts in making possible the future purchase of new uniforms. The spring concert was an outstanding suc- cess. The East Stroudsburg High Band had done it againg the long winter months of practice in the band room had paid off. ORGAN A pleasant background. for the usual school work, is pro- :ided by the organ students as they are heard practicing alter- nately during their free periods in the day. Lessons on the Hammond Organ in the auditorium were given by Miss Ona XX'eimer, first semesterg and by Miss Dorothy Lisette, second semester. Pedal exercises, hymn playing techniques, modern rhythms and classical airs-all form an integral part in training the organ students to play for assemblies and commencements. DANCEBAND Saints is the favorite piece selected by this year's lively dance band. When the various school organizations want a band for their dances and other events. do they hire one? No? They call on Mr. Robert Zellner's harmonious assemblage of some of the finest musicians in the county. Playing the important role in our school that it does. the dance band has a membership of B.
