TYPIHQ S-w-s, j-n-j - - so the first year typing class begins the drills that assure them a thorough knowledge of the keyboard and the nimble fingers that speed demands. The platen, carriage, margin releases and many other typewriter parts must be carefully 'emembered by the students. Timed writing tests form an important feate ure of the course our future stenographers and private secretaries follow. ln the second-year class, emphasis is placed on speed. By this time students have mastered forty words a minute but at gradua- tion after completing their practice they can manage sixty words per minute. Bookkeeping Future accountants and bookkeepers study iournalizing, posting to ledgers, summarizing changes into formal statements, and showing financial conditions of a business at stated in tervals during the year. Since journalizing differs in various busif ness concerns, our students are given a well- rounded background for any type they might encounter by learning five journalizing styles. To supplement textbook facts, both first and second year bookkeeping students work on Hpractice sets . l-lere future executives till out the complete business papers of the sets, exactly as if they were employees in a busie ness concern. These bookkeeping students are learning to balance accounts. 7.1 J-,vin L , . ..Q M., .,M..f , .27 2,5 5 .wk . This is done by filling a test tube one third tull ot the soil to be tested. Distilled water and barium sultate are added, Then the mixture is shaken and allowed to setf tle until a soil extract appears. A drop ol soil extract is then placed on a depression plate with a drop of dye indicator. By comparing the color drops with a color chart, the hydro- gen ion concentration ot the soil can be deters mined. Agriculture II The wood shop or farm mechanics shop is designed especially tor the purpose ot teach- ing the agriculture students the practical arty ol mechanics. ln this class, which meets once a week, students are taught to make .such things as lamp bases, stands and larm implef ments, They are taught how to use both power and hand tools, One completed protect rnu.-zt be submitted for credit in this course. Once again we hear the old familiar sound of shoe leather against pig- skin and the 'lone-two-three-hike! of signals being called. Yes, another football season is in progress. This year the football future of our school profited by the arrival of the new coach, Mr. Raymond Stengel, who hails from the Univer- sity of Pennsylvania. A capable athlete him- self, Coach Stengel was named All Northern in '44, when he played guard for the Universtiy of Pennsylvania. With his friendly personality and immediate interest in the team, Coach Stengel became the bright ray of hope for our team, which was weakened by the loss of many of our good players through graduation. The squad, although small and inexperienced, showed much improvement and pep in prac- tice. Much was expected of this years team, and they did their best to achieve what was expected of them. For, although the boys fought to the best of their ability, it wasnt good enough and the score proceeded to turn in favor of our opponents. Although rnany changes were rnade, rnost of the boys were in there fighting all the time. All chances of winning are gone for this year, but next season, with the return of boys like Dave Keller, our first string center and a great rnorale builder, 'llflicku Frisbie, our best pof tential passer, Keith Edinger, our level-headed quarterback, George Stettler, the snappy tere rier linernan, and many others of the sarne cal- ibre, next season is certain to show some good results. liven though our boys: tasted nothing but bitter defeat, they can hold their heads up with the knowledge that if given the chance, with experience, they can be a winning tearn. The fighting Eastburg team was the tirst to defeat the mighty l-lellertown, led on by our dead-eye Mery. Harmon, the main wheel ot the team, proved to be a superior ball handler and through this, caused the crumbling of many ol our opponents defenses. Mery was high man on the team leading with 267 points, Woolbert followed second with 246 points and Harmon tallied l7Q points. Although the Eastburg Basketeers did not come through the season undefeated, they caused many upsets and provided thrills galore in their nip and tuck playing. By developing boys from the Iunior High School, a better squad can be acquired for the varsity by more years of experience. The Eastburg Iunior Varsity provided many exciting thrills for the fans as a preview ot the varsity games. Even though they were an inexperienced team and won only 7 games out of 26, they gained the knowledge of team- work and sportsmanship. The Iunior Varsity builds up the potential men for the varsity. Even though the Iunior Varsity games do not contribute anything to the benefit of the league championship, they do bring out individual stars who will add to the betterment of the varsity.
