...DEDICATED DECEMBER 5 1958 ceremony, at which Dr. Delyte Morris of Southern Illinois Unizxersity was the chief speaker, was held in the auditorium. Mr. joseph Rountree, president of the Board of Education, presented the building to Mr. Downing for use by the high school students of the city of East St. Louis. According to Mr. john Steuernagel, Superintendent of Schools, between 8,000 and 10,000 interested members of the community visited the school on that day. A special edition of the East St. Louis Press contained many pictures of the high school's facilities and student organizations as well as pictures of the adnzinistrators and others connected with the building and the running of the high school. The academic portion of the building is connected with the shop, gymuasizmz, and cafeteria areas hy three corridors at right angles to the main corridor, which runs from east to west. The main corridor and the central connecting corridor are fourteen feet zcide, and the side cor- ridors are tu'elz'e feet zeide. Lockers are recessed in the zvalls. The floors of the main vestibule, the rest rooms, the shower aria' locker rooms, the stair halls, and the cafe- teria hjtchezz are of marhle terrazo. Floors in the corridors, the class- rooms, the laboratory areas, and the cafeteria are of asphalt tile with ruh- her tile hase.
