...DEDICATED DECEMBER 5 1958 ceremony, at which Dr. Delyte Morris of Southern Illinois Unizxersity was the chief speaker, was held in the auditorium. Mr. joseph Rountree, president of the Board of Education, presented the building to Mr. Downing for use by the high school students of the city of East St. Louis. According to Mr. john Steuernagel, Superintendent of Schools, between 8,000 and 10,000 interested members of the community visited the school on that day. A special edition of the East St. Louis Press contained many pictures of the high school's facilities and student organizations as well as pictures of the adnzinistrators and others connected with the building and the running of the high school. The Press also published let- ters fronz various dignitaries, including one from President Dwight Eisenhower, congratulating the city of East St. Louis on the building of the new high school. .,.,.m .: : g g 2 WY Wt 5 Q7 - .. li, .7 1, i g 5 D 1 fi' . fa' i . , , , 1 V 4 , ff L - , iaith he 'iii if' ' f fc'a,.jmi I ,if 62034, . THE NEW BUILDING . .. In September of 1958 the new East St. Louis Senior High School building, located at Forty-ninth and State Streets, was ready for occupancy. Although the gymnasiums were not completely finished, students, faculty, and administra- tors took possession of the building on the first day of the school year, and classes were definitely in session. The move from the old building to the new was accomplished with the minimum of confusion. Although many boxes stood in the classrooms waiting to be unpacked and many minor adjust- ments had to be made, the occupants proceeded as if they had always had classes in the building. The building was formally dedicated on Saturday, De- cember 6, by which time all portions were in use. The dedi- cation ceremony was a part of the annual Open House usually held in November during American Education Week.
