The group gives three public concerts each year The Band also plays in civic parades, such as the Labor Day Parade and the Veter- ans, Day Parade. ' . In the spring of 1956 the Band went to Decatur, Illinois, where they played for high school students. They also went on to Urbana, Illinois, and spent several hours touring the University of Illinois campus. That evening they attended Q1 concert given by the University of Illinois Concert Band. Plans are being made for another trip this spring. This year in Uctober the Band made a trip to Springfield, Missouri, to perform in a half-time show at the Ifast St. I,ouis vs. Parkview football game. For the past two years the Band has operated the concession stand at Parsons Ifield at home football games to make money to finance the Band trips. These girls, numbering over one hundred, take part in the annual Christmas and Spring concerts, which are highlights of entertainment and afford each and every girl with the opportunity of getting acquainted with good music. The group meets twice a week and is divided into classes, the number depending on the number of girls enrolled. There are three classes this year, meeting the sec- ond, fifth and seventh hours. Accompanists for the Girls' Advanced Chorus this year were Barbara Elliott, Lynda Goss, Roby Kenny, Lorena Barron, and Marcia Crank. The Mixed Advllnced Chorus Another popular musical organization, also under the direction of Miss Jost, is the Mixed Advanced Chorus. Consisting of three classes, each meeting twice a Week, the Mixed Advanced Chorus is an excellent choice for students who like co-ed groups. At the beginning of each semester, the chorus selects officers who tend to the busi- ness affairs, and select librarians, whose job is to keep the music in good order. Usually the officers are chosen from members of the graduating senior class. The Mixed Advanced Chorus participates in the various traditional concerts given each year by the combined choral groups. Accompanists for the Mixed Advanced Chorus this year were Marcia Koslow, Judy W'atkins, and Patricia Rojas. The Choir One of the important choral groups at East St. Louis High School is the Choir. Choir members are selected on the basis of auditions held each semester, and there are always a large number of students who aspire to fill the vacancies left by the graduating seniors. Choir members who are still in their first semester of membership are called provisionalsg after the satisfactory completion of the se- mester, they become regular members. Choir members, who rehearse and perform at their concerts under the direction of Miss Rosalia Jost, devote a great deal of their spare time to music, for practices are held for the most part before and after school. The Choir is called upon to perform many times during the school year. They provide music at graduation, at Open House, and for other special occasions. They present annual Christmas and Spring concerts and a program of sacred music at Easter. In addition to these performances, the group often sings for civic clubs in East St. Louis. They lead all the pep sessions and attend all the home games and as many away games as they can possibly get to. The cheerleaders practice regularly and industriously each week under the super- vision of Miss Florence Clute and attain a high degree of skill in their chosen activity. Never satisfied, they are constantly devising new cheers, musical and otherwise, designed to inspire enthusiasm and school spirit in audience and team. In their orange and blue oufits-they appear in sweaters and slacks or in sweaters, weskits, and flaring skirts bearing the Flyer insignia-the cheerleaders add more than a little color to the games and the auditorium sessions. The cheerleaders this year were Geri Kay Howell, Carole Valentine, Jean Bee- ver, Judy Mackin, and jean Barton. vbwff T ho T uurlors Like the cheerleaders the twirlers perform during the pep sessions and at the requires much rehearsing and the twirlers are determined that there shwll be no bruised on lookers as a result of tl1e1r baton tossing' games. They, too, practice regularly, for keeping the baton firmly under control Under the supervision of Miss Clute, the twirlers work out many interesting orange and blue uniforms or their navy blue shorts, white blouses, and orange cummerbunds, the twirlers truly add glamour to any occasion The twirlers this year were Carole Wacker, Lynne Pazdera, Mildred Mirring, Dorothy Brooks, and Betty Barham and intricate routines for the entertainment of their audiences. Wearing their The Senior Play This year, the play presented by the Speech H classes, all of whose members were members also of the January '57 class, was a comedy entitled George Washing- ton Slept Heren. Mrs. Clinton D. Bowman, speech teacher, was the director. The play, which was presented on two nights and with two different casts, con- cerned a Mr. Newton Fuller, who, longing to get away from city life, purchased an antiquated, run-down house in the country, which had as its only asset the rumor that George Washington had slept there. There are all kinds of complica- tions when Mr. Fuller, much to the dismay of his wife and the rest of the fam- ily, invests all of the family funds in the necessary repairs and improvements. Things turn out happily for the Fullers, however, and the house proves to be a wise Purchase after all. Tho Son ior Pla y The second semester Speech II class, also under the direction of Mrs. Bowman, presented a three-act comedy, Ladies of the Jury . The play was given four times, twice in the high school auditorium and twice in the round in the high school library. The la concerns incidents takin lace in the 'ur room, where Mrs. Crain, P Y A u g .P l 1 Y . a wealthy, sophisticated woman who is the main character, influences other mem- bers of the jur to her wa of thinkin . The six men and six women on the 'ur . Y y 5. . . l. V take forty-eight hours to reach a decision, and the comical aspects of the situation are heightened by such characters as Mr. Presley, the egotistical foreman of the jury, Miss Pratt, the self-righteous spinster, and Mayme, the ex-chorus girl. ygz 73? 5 .JAIJJARY If j bfxxld Trung F96Tv4U 119 4' 1?
