Hasf ti, o flee 5 f gf four enact H gl: gcleool A two room frame building on lrifth Street between St Louis and Missouri Ascnues was constructed in 1814 as the first East St Louis Senior High School 'Ihe fifteen or twenty students enrelled hid as their teaeher ind principal 'Vlr C A Singletirs Eight of these students reeened their diplomas in 1877 after a three year course Vlr Single tirs resigned the following year ind Nlr 1 W Rafter was appointed principal When 'Vlr Rafter resigned in 1850 1 dispute arose mer filliag the vaeanes Suspend ing school indefinitelv was the solution to this problem How eser the High School was reopened with 'Vlr Charles L Nlanners is principal four seirs later Then the course was lengthened to four years More space was required by 1890 In the Howe Institute at Tenth Street and College Avenue two additional studs rooms and recitation rooms for the students use were made available Rock Junior High on Tenth Street and Summit Asenue was the next location of thes thriving institution In March 1895 four teachers and one hundred students occupied this building foi the first time The Horace Mann School which is the north wing of the present Senior High Sehool was erected in 1905 It was in this year that mid year commeneements were started and the first foetball team was organiz d 'Ihe High Schools first orehestri was in troduced in a concert given in the school auditorium a year later Mr D Walter Potts wls principal from 1910 to 1912 w hen he beeime Superintend ent. Succeeding Mr. Potts was Mr. H. . Alvis. Our High School building became substantially the same as it is now during 1915 and 1916 when an addition to the Horace Mann School was constructed. ln Septemb'r 1916 classes met here for the first time. Soon students were reading the first issue of The Prospects and the first band was organized. In 1924 Mr. Alvis resigned and Mr. H. A. Kanzler succeeded him. Mr. Frank L. Ever- sull became principal in 1928. Mr. Eversull resigned in 1933 and was succeeded by our present principal Mr. XV. L. Baughman. To Mr. Baughman during World War 11 was given the tremendous job of organiLing and supervising all our High School s various war actisities. He was loyally assisted by' faculty members and students and by the assistant principal Mr. Wii't Downin . In the fall of 1947 a new member was added to the staff of the East St. Louis Senior High School in the person of Mr. XValter danson counselor and program director. To Mr. ohnson falls the task of advising the students concerning their choice of school .subjects and of administering vocational preference and aptitude tests. Wit the arrival of 1949 there comes opportunity for further progress in t ie liast St. Louis Senior High School. Through the help of it loyal faculty and student body the new developments so necessary in educational institutions will certain y be realiveel.
