Many more will inevitably enter the Armed Forces. The sacrifices which they must make are qreat. They must leave home and friends: they must post- pone that part of life to which they have looked forward so eaqerlyp they must encounter hardship and danger. We feel, therefore, that it is only fitting that this book be dedicated to those of our class who have already, or will in the future, enter the Armed Forces of the United States. EAST ST. He greeted us and gave us 'the information that started us on our high school careers. Since that time we have been in frequent contact with him when in need of advice or aid in school activities. We have undoubtedly given him many trying moments during our sojourn at the East St. Louis Senior High School, but he has always been willing to serve us when needs be. His guidance made possible many of the pleasures and interests We have derived from high school. To him We are ever indebted. Q. 'P - -1 A '1-1 EAST ST. LOUIS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Page Seven MR. W. They have helped us with all the problems We have had: they have been called upon to advise in every matter that has arisen. Our home room ad- visers have always been on hand to straighten us out it necessary, serving us as no one else has done during our stay in high school. IWQSWJQWK Cfhe Dean of Boqs This fall Mr. Wirt Downing received the appointment of Dean of Boys, an office which has been vacant since the departure of Mr. Bolen Carter in the fall of 1943. No instructor is more admired and respected than Mr. Down- ing, and he has shown his ability to manage boys in many ways. We are 'sure that the students of our high school will benefit abundantly as a result of his promotion to this position. ' .' ' o :fig ' 4 . .. .hu of lifxsr ST. Art Instructor - Librarian Page Twelve THE ESTLIAN F7 JANUARY 1945 CLASS ln lllcmoriam Students and faculty members alike will lonq mourn the loss of one of their most steadfast friends, Mr. L. I. Musselman, who for twenty-three years was a teacher in the Commercial Department at the East St. Louis Senior High School. ln his classroom on Friday morning, November 17, Mr. Musselman was stricken by a cerebral hemorrhage, and died a few hours later at a local hospital. lf there be such a thinq as immortality, certainly some part of it is com- prised of the ideals and attitudes, and the emphasis upon human decencies which one in his brief span on earth is able to instill into the hearts and minds and souls of those who pass within the province of his constructive influence. We know that such immortality has been achieved by Mr. Musselman, for his memory shall live--fresh, vibrant, inspiring-in the hearts of students and friends whose numbers are leqion. No qreater tribute can be paid than the assertion of the universal conviction which he inspired-that he was a friend: and better still, that he was a MAN. rf EAST ST. However, this year the title was shared with Alton and Belleville. Our opening game was with Webster Groves, Missouri, High School. Bob Meintrup's touchdown from the 16-yard line gave East St. Louis its only score as we emerged victorious, 7 to 0. ln the season's second game we overcame the Soldan Tigers of St. Louis by a larger margin, 30 to 6. Charlie Tourajigian scored twice and Henson McClelland, Bob Meintrup, and Gene Dartt each had one marker. Dartt's touchdown was an 85-yard run after intercepting a Tiger pass on their l5-yard line. Parson's Field was jammed with 10,000 fans as East St. Louis de- feated Boosevelt High School of St. Louis in the annual Shriner's Clas- sic. The game certainly gave the crowd what they liked to see as East St. Louis came from behind in the last quarter to gain the victory, l9 to l4. Howard Dartt scored the deciding tally after his brother, Gene, had marked up two, earlier in the game. East St. Louis gained its twentieth straight triumph as it trampled over the Madison Trojans 36 to 0. Touchdowns were garnered by foe Ridgway, Bob Egan, Bill Swofford, Gordon Roberts, and Gene Dartt. The following Friday, the Flyers met the Granite City Warriors. Playing their best defensive game of the year, they came out on top of a 21 to 7 score. Tourajigian, returning to the lineup after a two- week layoff with a bad ankle, scored the Flyers first tally. Bob Egan went over in the third quarter on an end around play and Bob Thomas accounted for the final touchdown. Traveling to Alton the next week, East St. Louis staged a dramatic fourth quarter rally to win Zl to 14. After a scoreless first half, foe Ridgway ran back the opening kickoff 74 yards to Alton's 6-yard line. After holding the Flyers for four dpwns, their punt was blocked by Armise Stivers who fell on it for the first score. Then Alton's passing began to click, and with only a few minutes left in the game, our Fly- ers were trailing 14 to 7. However on several nice runs, Charlie Tour- aiigian tallied for 7 more points to tie the game. But a win was what East St. Louis wanted and that is what they received when a few plays later Gene Dartt shook his way through to pay dirt and the game's final touchdown. Howard Dartt converted the extra point. P Q Fifiv-IWC THE ESTLIAN w JANUARY 1945 CLASS The Football Season On October 27, East St. Louis took over the lead in the Conference race by defeating Wood Biver 47 to 0, while Alton overcame Belleville l4 to l2. Bob Egan scored twice, once on a pass from Gene Ferguson and once on an end around. Charlie Tourajigian also had two mark- ers, while Howard Dartt, Henson McClelland, and Bob Meintrup had one apiece. Meeting Edwardsville in the year's wettest game on the following Friday, East St. Louis came from behind to gain a 37 to 7 triumph. Trail- ing 7 to 0 in the second quarter, the Flyers began to open up. After Bob Egan had raced 31 yards, Gene Dartt carried the ball over from the 25. Tourajigian tied the score with the extra point. A talley by Gene Ferguson put East St. Louis ahead, and the lead was further in- creased with two more touchdowns by Tourajigian and one by Howard Dartt. A safety added the final two points to East St. Louis' score. The next Friday East St. Louis became the city champions as they defeated Central Catholic High School 27 to l2. The Flyers led only by a 7 to 6 score at half time as the result of a pass to Bob Egan in the end zone from Gene Ferguson. Then Henson McClelland cracked through left guard twice for two touchdowns with runs of 37 and 47 yards. Bob Meintrup added the Flyers' final talley in the fourth guar- ter. The Flyers last game before the Belleville encounter was a 34 to l4 victory over the Collinsville Kahoks. Howard Dartt scored three touchdowns on runs of 47, 43, and 61 yards. His younger brother Gene scored the Flyers other two markers on two runs of 39 yards. Both brothers had an extra point, as did Charlie Tourajigian and Henson McClelland. On Thanksgiving morning more than 8500 fans jammed into the Belleville stadium to witness the annual classic between the Flyers and the Maroons. Costly fumbles by Orange and Blue ball carriers, and four great goal line stands by Belleville's line were the reasons why East St. Louis dropped a 7 to 0 battle. Belleville scored early in the first quarter and this touchdown proved to be enough. This defeat ended the 27 game winning streak of the Flyers, which was the longest that the state had seen in thirty years. East St. Louis had also won 49 out of its last 50 starts. Gene Dartt was the Flyers' leading ground gainer and scorer of the season with 879 yards and 58 points. Howard Dartt possessed the best running average in the Orange and Blue backfield with 8.5 yards per try. Charlie Tourajigian was a close second in points scored with 52. Armise Stivers did a great job of firing the team as their acting cap- tain for the year. The .team honored Gene Dartt at the close of the season by electing him the captain of the 1945 squad. of EAsr Sr. Louis SENIOR HIGH Sci-roor. In the past years East St. Louis has usually begun its basketball season during the last part of the football season. This meant that those on the football squad who were interested in basketball could not go out until the end of the gridiron season. This year, however, the cage season did not open until a week after the final football game. That first game was on December 1 with Waterloo at Waterloo. This year's version of the Flyer Cagers will be greatly weakened by the graduation of three of the first five players in Ianuary '45. They are Captain-elect Ioe Ridgway, Eugene Fibber Ferguson, and Armise Stivers. While in Senior High School Ioe has lettered in baseball, bas- ketball, and football. Eugene has lettered in baseball, basketball and football also. Armise hals likewise lettered in three sports--track, foot- ball, and basketball. Last year, although they did not win the Southwestern Conference Championship, the team Won the District ChampionshipatBelleville and then went on to defeat Collinsville in a close game for the Sectional Championship. As a result of this win they became the first East St. Louis basketball team to play in the State Tournament at Champaign in the last seventeen years. THE ESTLIAN 1 JANUARY 1945 Cuss of EAST ST. Taking ten lettermen with them, Norman Sackett, Howard Dartt, Walter Kersulis, Cecil Greg- son, Charles Phelps, Taso Terss, Robert Murphy, Robert Egan, Dean Shopher, and Armise Stivers, East St. Louis emerged victorious in their initial encounter. However, in our second meet at Belleville, a triangular affair with the Flyers, Maroons, and Warriors taking part, we did not fare so well. Meeting a strong Belleville team, we managed to garner firsts only in the shot put, high jump, pole vault, and discus throw, three of which were captured by Norman Sackett. The final score was Belleville, 52, East St. Louis, 43, and Granite City, 22. On April 29 East St. Louis went to Granite City for the Conference Relays. Although Belleville was favored, East St. Louis managed to tie them for first place honors with 74 5X6 points apiece. This was the ninth straight year we had figured in this title. In the annual District Meet held at Granite City, on May 13, East St. Louis qualified four boys to compete in the State Track Meet, as our team finished second. These four boys were Norman Sackett, Howard Dartt, Roy Shourd, and Charles Phelps. Sackett, who placed third in the pole vault in the state meet, acquired the Flyers' only points. The track season was wound up on May 27 at Granite City with the Conference meet. Without the services of Norman Sackett, who wrenched his ankle the previous week, East St. Louis was nosed out of the crown they had held for eight years, 50 to 47. Walter Kersulis won the discus throw, Charles Phelps took the pole vault, and Howard Dartt overcame Ioe Budde of Belleville in the 100 yard dash, to take first place in an event that Budde had dominated the entire season in the Southwestern Conference. The Flyers only other first was in the 880 yard relay with a team consisting of Howard Dartt, Robert Egan, Robert Murphy, and lames Stewart. Although our record at the end of the season showed 7 wins and 6 defeats, we were put out of the Sectional Tournament by Central Cath- olic High School in an extra inning ball game. Central managed to beat us 2 to 1, and went on to be the State Runner-Up, as East St. Louis had been the year before. This game was also for the City champion- ship. Our first game of the season was a 10 to 6 victory over the Madison Trojans. The hitting attack was led by Gene Dartt who got a homer and a double. Dartt knocked out five hits in his first five appearances this season, and went on to have the best batting average on the team at the close of the year. Since there was no Southwestern Conference in baseball this year, East St. Louis was forced to get games when and where they could. This accounted for the Flyers playing their first night game. ln a four inning game that was called because of wet weather, East St. Louis trounced the Belleville Cathedral Crusaders 10 to O, behind the brilliant pitching of lack Cocky Houston. The game was played in the Stag Park at Belleville. The City Series was opened by a 6 to 5 win over Central Catholic. The game was climaxed with a triple by Charles Tourajigian in the ninth, that drove in the tying and winning runs. We dropped our sec- ond game to Central 6 to 1. After defeating Roosevelt High School of St. Louis in a 2 to 1 thrill- er, we opened up in the Sectional Tournament by defeating Madison with the same score. Then came the final game that we dropped Cen- tral, ending our season. The Flyers lineup during the majority of the season was as follows: Marshall Erhardt, catcherg William McFarland, first base, Eugene Fer- guson, second base, Charles Tourajigian, third base, lack Eaves, short stop: Howard Dartt, left fieldp foe Ridgway, center fieldg Eugene Dartt, right field, and Dennis Harris and lack Houston, pitchers.
