Q52 THE ESTLIAN Page Two DEDICATICN The members of every class, like the members of every generation, face new and difficult problems. And so We of the Class of lanuary 1943 have been faced With problems. Probably the most crucial of these was deciding Whether or not to publish an Estlian. lt is certainly true that it is our para- mount duty as American citizens that this confusion which has descended upon the World may be brought more quickly to a finish. Yet to counterbalance this is the fact that this Estlian represents the very things We are fghting to preserve. The decision we came to after long and not al- together painless deliberation is obvious. The Class of Ianuary 1943 has published an Estlian. lt is our hope that the memories of our high school years, made tangible in this book, may prove an incentive to us who must now go out to help preserve all the things this books stands for. lt is our hope that these pages may increase in us the desire to preserve for future generations the happy experiences and oppor- tunities of the past three years. With such hope for the future We dedicate this book to those students who, in a happier time after the War and the peace have been Won, will enjoy a school life which will combine the best of the old ex- periences with hitherto undreamed of opportunities. Page Thirty-Zgbt - - - I- ATHLETICS THE ESTLIAN Page Forty WIRT DOWNING LEWIS PICK DEHNER The 1942 Football Season As the opening of the 1942 season grew near, the enthusiasts of the East St. Louis Senior High School's football squad were looking forward to an- other successful year on the gridiron. After last year's brilliant performances everyone was hoping for another season of football thrills and a repetition of last year's winning team. They had not long to wait, for at Coach Downing'-s first call for foot- ball players there came a response from eleven returning lettermen. ln addition to the three backs and eight linemen, Coach Downing and Coach Mike Cullen had a great number of young grid hopefuls to turn out for men were confronted with the problem of turning this a strong compact group for their opening game. more than 4000 fans the Orange and Blue inaugurated an impressive victory over Soldan High School of St. score 25-6 and the school's nineteenth consecutive vic- the Flyers looked forward to their game against the practice and the two mass of material into With a crowd of the 1942 season with Louis. With the final tory under their belts, Springfield Solons. There to the satisfaction of all East St. Louis students they trimmed the Capitol boys and chalked up their twentieth victory with the score 16-6. On October 2 the High School opened its 1942 Southwestern lllinois Con- ference race by a 13-0 win over the Alton Hilltoppers. This was also the twenty-first consecutive victory for the Flyers. The following week, however, the Flyers were idle, for the scheduled game with Wood River was postponed at the last minute because of the death of Wood River's co-captain and center. The Flyers' next football encounter was on Friday, October 16, when they clinched their twenty-second straight victory by defeating the Edwardsville Tigers 26-0 in a Southwestern Conference game here at Parson's Field. Now comes the sad part of our story. On Friday, October 23, the Flyers ended their twenty-two game winning streak as they bowed to the Decatur Reds 26-6. Completing twenty-one passes out of thirty-one attempts to main- tain their better than 500 average for the season, the Decatur team swamped our Flyers. A week later on Halloween amidst a torrential downpour the boys got into the good graces of the fans by drowning the Collinsville Kahoks by a JANUARY 1943 l FRANCIS M1KE'. CULLEN The 1942 Football Season CContinued from Page 403 score of 27-0 and adding to their string their third conference victory of the season. Before an enthusiastic crowd of some 5000 football fans the East St. Louis Flyers defeated the Salem Wildcats by the score of 6-0 in the Shriner's Foot- ball Classic held here, Friday, November 6. Although Salem had the weight advantage, East St. Louis was able to score and win. The game was both hard fought and well played from the kickoff until the final gun sounded ending the game. Four nights later the Flyers met Wood River in their rescheduled game, and playing again in pouring rain, they retained first place in the conference by the score of 7-0. This was the game which had previously been scheduled for October 9. Then came the all-important game with Granite City, the only undefeated team in this territory. They had put Belleville out the week before by a 6-0 score and this was a game that could not be lost. The Flyers, however, were equal to the task, and showing probably their best form of the season, put Granite City back into second place by a very impressive 25-14 victory. Coach Downing used second and third stringers most of the last half, or Granite might not have scored at all. Then on November 20 the annual East St. Louis-Central Catholic grid tilt was held. The Flyers trounced the Central Pioneers 32-2 for their eighth city championship at Parson's Field. Over some twenty years, rain or shine, sleet or snowfcrowds of enthusi- astic spectators have gathered at either Belleville or East St. Louis to view the annual Thanksgiving Day Football Classic between East St. Louis High School and Belleville Township High School. This year was no exception, for on Thanksgiving Day morning the Flyers ended their 1942 football season by marching to a 7-6 win over the Belleville Maroons to cinch the Southwest- ern Conference championship. The Flyers marched to victory before a crowd of approximately 8,500 fans at the Belleville High School stadium. lt was the sixth consecutive victory for the Flyers and the second defeat for Belleville. The Flyers scored in the first three minutes of play and a perfect place-kick proved to be the extra point which gave the Flyers their margin of victory. This was the twenty-second victory for East St. Louis out of 27 games that they have played with Belleville. Basketball The East St. Louis Flyers' Basketball team has gotten off to a good start this year with six wins and only two losses. Under the able leadership of Coach Pick Dehner and Assistant Coach Mike Cullen, the team opened its 1942-43 season with an enviable record of four straight wins. The Flyers displayed their fine abilities in these games by defeating O'Fallor1 30-16, blasting Blewett 44-10, swamping Soldan under a 68-47 deluge, and trimming Decatur 38-33. They were toppled from the undefeated ranks, however, by the Collins- ville Kahoks in their fifth encounter by a 32-26 score. This was followed by another defeat, this time by Centralia 54-32. The Flyers righted themselves by winning two games, one with Hills- boro C40-323 and one with Alton C40-265, the last games played by the Flyers at this writing. Wrestling For the eighth successive year Coach Downing's rnatsters in l942 won the championship of the Southwestern Illinois Wrestling Conference. Never since the origin of a wrestling conference in Southwestern competition has the Orange and Blue been denied a share of the title. Besides winning the championship this past year the Flyers went through their schedule un- defeated. Finishing the season with eight wins and no losses, the team chalked up 245 points against 67 for their rivals. Not stopping there the wrestling squad went on to take first place in the sectional tournament with their rivals, Granite City and Belleville placing second and third respectively. They placed fifth in the state tournament with Kenneth Littlefield taking the championship in the 95-pound state meet and Calvin Walker placing second in the l75 state meet. Members of the Wrestling squad who expect to graduate this year are Walter Versen, Robert Behrman, Iarnes Lewis, and Calvin Walker. Baseball The East St. Louis Senior High School's baseball team went through a tough schedule to weld for themselves another successful season in the spring of l942. Winning six games and losing four, the Flyers became co-champions of the Southwestern Conference with Madison. They also shared the city championship with Central Catholic High School, each team losing and win- ning one game. Under the leadership of Coach Frances Mike Cullen this fine group of players went on to the regional tournaments, only to lose a hard game to Dupo High School at Dupo. A number of the team's first-stringers will be absent from the '43 lineup. Those expecting to graduate are Ralph Shemoney, Henry Schrnulbach, and Walter Schildroth. Track Vtfith the fine showing that Coach Downing and his 1942 tracksters have made it is With eager anticipation that the school looks forward to another track championship in 1943. After cancelling their first meet with Soldan High School of St. Louis be- cause of bad Weather, the Flyers went on to take the triangular meet held by East St. Louis, Granite City, and Collinsville on April 18 by a score of 89Vz-26Vz-l. This was followed by another Flyer victory on April 25 when the East St. Louis team traveled to Granite City to capture its sixth succes- sive All-Conference Relay title. On April 29, at the Belleville Township High School, East St. Louis was again victorious in a meet with Belleville. The final score on this occasion was 59-54. In the state meet held on May 16 at Champaign, Illinois, the Flyers battled their way to the top position by nosing out Belleville and Granite City, 60-52 3X5-14. This proved to be one of the toughest meets of the season for the Flyers. The brilliant performance shown by the team there was proof that the East St. Louis Senior High School is indeed a school of champions. The final meet of the season was held in Granite City on May 23 and 24. The Flyers did not falter but went on to win the meet with Belleville and Granite City ending in second and third place. Very few members of the track squad are graduating this fanuary, so We can expect to see a very strong team in l943. The National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the greatest honors that can come to a member of the graduating class. This semester twenty- eight students were inducted into the East St. Louis Chapter Number 798 of this organization. They are Albert Dauer, Bernard Drust, William Elmore, Rex Fletcher, Ir., Francis Sobieralski, Robert Terss, Dorothy Baldwin, Carmen Blumeyer, Mary Catherine Borders, Marileigh Bushey, Doris Cleveland, Mil- dred Curran, Evelyn Dobyns, Sarah Elmore, Dorothy Franklin, Lois Freuden- berg, Margaret Fristoe, Ruth Gregory, Gwendolyn Harrison, Iuanita Hubert, Helen Iustice, Anna Prineas, Dorothy Rosson, Bernice Rothman, Wynona Schaffer, Ardelle Schmidt, Aurora Tourajigian, and Grace Whitson. To become a member of the National Honor Society a student must be of high scholastic standing. His character, qualities of leadership, and his service to the school are also of great importance. Each group to be inducted elects its chairman, who cooperates with a faculty committee in making preparations for the induction. This semester William Elmore was chosen for this position. If we were given a choice of memories to keep, we should probably want most of all to preserve our class history. Those memorable Pep Days, Talent Shows, and Iunior Proms are never to be forgotten. But just to refresh our memories a bit, let us lift the cover of our class history for a moment and see what we shall find. The first part is, as usual, called lntroduction. That's our first few weeks here in the East St. Louis Senior High School. Remember them? We just couldn't find any of our rooms. Some of us were tempted to look for the elevators and buy tickets to the aud session. Nevertheless we sur' vived and tried with all our might to follow the advice given to us on our entry by our principal, Mr. W. L. Baughman-to take advantage of all the opportunities offered us here. ln fact, We made such good use of our op- portunities that we chose that year for our Football Queen candidate the girl who was really to achieve that honor when she later represented our graduating class. The girl, of course, was Ieanne Sheppard. During the next chapter, our junior year, we elected as class officers Frank Sobieralski, presidentp Helen Iustice, vice-president, Helen Schreiber, secretary, and Aurora Tourajigian, treasurer. These officers planned the Iunior Prom and magnificently fulfilled their obligations as Class officers. We were proud this year to have Margaret Fristoe, our football Queen can- didate, chosen Football Queen for the year 1941-42. Helen Schreiber was chosen Basketball Queen candidate and made an admirable showing. lust before the end of our junior year our country formally entered into the great conflict which we call World War ll. Since then our school life has been altered. Some of our dearest friends and teachers have gone to aid the cause of Freedom. But we did not sit idly by. We bought War Bonds and Stamps, joined the Red Cross, and took part in the Schools at War pro- gram. Some of our boys joined girls studied home nursing. We school and to the world. u began to feel a new responsibility to In our senior year we once Helen Iustice was again chosen came secretary, and Robert Terss vice-president, while Margaret Fristoe the aeronautics classes, while many of the OLII' more elected Frank Sobieralski president. be- was elected our treasurer. Ieanne Sheppard was once more elected our Football Queen candidate, and our class was highly honored when she became queen. Among other members of our class who attained high honors were Harriet Boudoures, president of the Drum, Bugle, and Drill Corps: Ruth Gregory, editor of The Estlian g Marion Mirring, Mildred Curran, and Iames Downs, cheerleaders. Twenty-eight of our mem- bers attained that greatly to be desired honor-election to the National Honor Society. And so we have come to the last chapter, the most exciting of all-- graduation. We shall then pick up a new book--the Future-and examine its contents. But even though we lay aside the chapters of our high school career, its record will always have an appeal for us. The adventures, ex- periences and people who live between the covers of our class history we shall never quite forget.
