CLASS HISTORY It was August of 1942 and lxttle boys and gmrls were answermg the beckomng of the school bells Many of these boys and gxrls were gomg to East Spencer School Yes, thxs llttle group headxng for East Spencer School was to be the Semor Class of 54 Twelve of this group wxll graduate wlth us They are Nathan Thomason Barbara Lyerly Jean Earn hardt Donald Goodman Donald Gheen,Donna Goodman, Shxrley Smder B1ll1e Kluttz Juha Nanme Glener Burns Margaret Ellmott and Donald Ludwmck T h e reto gulde us through our f1rst year was Mrs Larry Folger Our favor1te story book character was Epammon das and Mrs Folger read us many stones about hnm Jerry Dees Jomed our small group at the end of our fxrst year Soon our fu-st year was ove r and at the end of a short summer vacatmon we entered the second grade where we settled down and began learmng our readmg, rxtmg and r1th metxc Betty Koontz Allen Jomed us from Spencer thls year M1ss Helen Waller was our second grade teacher Wlth Mrs Brockman as our teacher we moved on to the third grade where we began learmng our multxpllcatxon tables Charles Culp Jolned us there Fmally we r e a c hed the fourth grade where we were Joined by George Small Mrs Fred Bankett was our teacher Stxll more mult1pl1cat1on tables' We were fortunate m havmg Paul Smxth Jom us IH the flfth grade Agaln Mrs Brock man was our teacher Th1s year we had our fu-st c our s e m North Carolina Hlstory and each of us made a hlstory notebook Our class was d1v1ded IU the slxth grade and as our teachers we had Mrs Brockman and Mrs James Mes1mer Poems' We learned them all Next came the s e venth grade and we had as our teacher Mlss Ruby Flemmg Thms year we orgamzed a Cltxzenshlp Club, whlch we enjoyed very much, especxally the plays and part1es on Frrday afternoons Coy M1senhe1mer and Ellen Honeycutt Jomed us m the elghth grade Our teacher was Mr Clarence C Boyan Thls year was hlghllghted by the Hallowe en party whlch our class had nn the gym We all m ade history scrapbooks and wrote a blography this year Se ptem be r 50' We were Freshmen at last For years our hopes and ambltrons were to be a part of the hlgh school student body We contrlbuted several new members to the basketball and baseball te a m s and the cheermg squad th1s year Mrs Hugh Sldes was our homeroom teacher Jul1a Nanme Jomed us from Dukevmlle thls year The summer passed quickly and we entered another yea r of school our Sophomore year Upon returmng to school we found that many of our classmates had left us Several of our gn-ls were honored by being asked to serve at the Jr Sr banquet thls year Among these were Margaret Ellmott, Barbara Lyerly, Donna Goodman Shlrley Sm der Bxllxe Kluttz and Glener Burns Many of us received mv1tat1ons to Jom the Beta Club We thoroughly enjoyed our ID 1t1at1on Our homeroom teacher was Mr Thomas Glles At last we were Jolly Junxors Mrs Rankm was our homeroom teacher We had a full year wlth our Jumor play Young and Llvely and the Jumor Semor banquet We fmanced a banquet wxth profxts from a candy sale and square dances Showboat was the theme we chose Our class also sponsored the school newspaper The Beacon And at last m September, 54 we became dxgmfxed Semors Upon returmng to sch001 we were Jomed by Ma ry Gardner and Dlck Alexander Th1s bemg our last year, we have trled to make the best of It We have worked very hard on our annual The fun we have had together thls year wxll long be remembered Now that we a r e on the brmk of graduatxon we look back over our years together and realmze that they have been happy ones As we b1d farewell to our school days we thmk of the poem At the Crossroads by Rlchard Hovey You to the left and I to the rmght For the ways of men must sever And xt well may be for a day and a mght And lt may be forever But whether we meet or whether we part For our ways are past our knowmg A pledge from the heart to its fellow heart On the ways we all are gomg Here s Luck' For we know not where we are gomg.
