Like the branches of a tree, we will seek the sun where each individual can flower. Many of us will continue our education and go on to college. Some of us will join the Armed Forces and some of us will get married shortly “A New Beginning after graduation. It seems as if only yesterday, we were walking through the doors of high school, to a new beginning. Each of us experienced different feelings; fear, anxiety, and excitement. During those first years two words did not cross our minds: ‘Young Adults, the generation of tomorrow High school life will soon be over left behind us but stored within our memory. Our years at East Side will be but a chapter in our lives. There will be memories, of regrets, laughter, tears and success. There are not enough words to describe all we have expe- rienced in this limited space, therefore, it is up to each and every one of us to remember our special moments Top Right: A walk through time in 3rd floor, C-building. Bottom Right: Our old school name Top Left: School spirit. Bottom Left: Demands from the library. А t East Side High School, Students can truly be, Everything including ‘cool,’ Even if the future we cannot see. This school prepares you, In every way, If you are true, You can have a memorable stay. If you can’t see clearly, Just raise your hand, And if you still have problems, Raise your hand again. Teachers have helped us through time, And at East Side we had a start, We will remember good times in our minds, And good friends in our hearts. Top Right: Tell me, oh wise one. What is the answer? Bottom Right: Ronnie... Dazed and confused. Center: I'll give you $1.00 if you eat my lunch. Bottom Center: Peek-a-boo. | see you. Left: Ha! Real funny. That is the question Left: Ill be right back! Bottom Left: | love Rock-n-Roll! Bottom: This is easier than | thought! “Spring Break 88” As signs of spring appeared, a few of us spent our tree time hanging out and others working. Then there were the lucky ones, those who journeyed to Disney World in Or lando, Florida. Those lucky people, as reported by Selma Bastos, enjoyed a week of frolic and wonder. What they experienced they brought back to share with us. Marilyn Fernandes said, I really enjoyed different types of food and the warm tropical sun. While Marisol Montesdeoca expressed, It was a magnificent trip and | would love to go again They visited the six different lands at the Magic Kingdom which were ‘Fantasy Land, ‘Frontier Land,’ ‘Adventure Land,’ ‘Tomorrow Land,’ ‘Liberty Square’ and ‘Main Street U.S.A.'. Such attractions as the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,’ ‘Space Mountain’ and ‘It’s a Small World’ which included hundreds of singing, in ternational dolls; were not only thrilling but also delightful Students explored the two worlds of Epcot Center which were ‘Future World’ and the ‘World Showcase.’ In Epcot Center, East Siders enjoyed a trip of communications through time in ‘Spaceship Earth’ and traveled around the world browsing from country to country Many students passed their time within and around Disney World and futuristic trains, also known as Monorails’ were provided for our transportation between parks. Some spent an evening dining at the Polynesian Village Resort where they experienced a Hawaiian Luau Others had a splash during the day in ‘Wet-n-Wild’ which was made up entirely of water-rides With all of these places to visit, time went by fast and they found themselves on their way back to school. Before we even realized ‘Senior Year’ was awaiting us = “м А | pS «1 | r w a f f. ! “Junior Prom” Heaven In Your Eyes’ a great name for a great Junior Prom. As everyone entered the Portuguese Pavilion look ing absolutely stunning, the room ech oed with laughter and excitement The room was dimly lit, but enough to see how well our prom committee had worked on all the decorations. The tables were covered in white table cloths with red and white balloons placed in the middle to give an extra special ‘East Side’ glow. At each place setting was a glass with ‘Heaven In Your Eyes, April. 29, 1988,’ etched on it, for this was a special night in our years at East Side High School and we wanted to remember all the wonderful times we have shared as a class. Top Left: Hmm! Good. Left: l'd rather be home sleeping. “A Typical Day at East Side We had a substitute for history today. We didn’t do much damage to the room this time. The only problem now is that some people are dazed and confused after they got hit on the head with one of the chairs. Okay, maybe it’s impossible to play baseball with chairs, but at least we tried Just after we thought we were going to die of boredom, the bell rang. Lunch time. The hardest decision we have to make all day is what we should eat for lunch. Stale bologna sandwiches or the meat watchamacallit. Whatever we chose, we’d play it safe, by paying someone to taste test it for us. If they didn’t die, we knew it was edible. On our way to our next class, we push and shove to get into our classroom, nearly to murder someone who is inside. As we finally make it to gym on time, and dress to play, the fire bell rings. “What's the wind chill factor today? 90 below zero? During seventh period, you're studying for the next and final class of an E.S. day and we find ourselves tired, hungry, thirsty, and sleepy. In other words we should be home watching T.V. The test is over and if you're confident you probably passed it with a high D. The bell rings once again and it's not a fire drill. As we walk out the building, we hear someone calling. And if you turn around it will probably be a teacher with a missed homework assignment. There- fore, do not turn around. Go straight home. Repeat. Go straight home. Right: Henry is busy right now, can | take a message? Bottom Right: Fou and Jose, “So how about those Mets?” Top Left: Oh, No! here she comes. Mid-Left: Fire drill . . . Again! Bottom Left: Hi! Top Right: So many men, so little time Mid-Right: Can’t wait to get out Bottom Right: Pass me the squeegee Center: Oh boy, Can you believe this picture Left: I'm exhausted! Lessons They said “we'd never make it, And they thought they were right But we kept on plodding onward Because we hoped we might And they shook their heeds in wonder That we lacked the sense to quit, But we held our chins up higher, And we didn’t mind a bit They said, “we would never make it As the problems multiplied, But we had to make an effort, And to know at least we tried So we dug our heels in deeper, Though sometimes our spirits lagged. And we shouldered what was lightest, And the rest sort of dragged. And we found to our amazement, At the ending of the day That what they said we couldn't, We had managed anyway. It only took three little words, Please help us, and we rid Ourselves of doubt, and all they said We'd never do... We did.’ Top Right: “Hey guys what are we doing tonight?” ““ think I'm washing my hair Bottom Right: Are we having fun yet? Top Left: Call me when the bell rings Mid-Left: Just hanging loose Bottom Left: Big Foot, strikes again “Expressions” East Side has a variety of student types. The lonely, the friendly, the shy, the conservative, the studious and the goldbrick actors. They have all left behind marks in some way or other. Top Right: Would you like a bite of my sandwich? Mid-Right: Hey! None of the bathrooms are open. Bottom Right: WARNING: We are conducting a major scientific experiment. Center: I’m not tired. | just look it. Top Left: Sandy ... you're making me excited. Bottom Left: Irma Cardoso . . . actually reading. East Siders, have their own special moods shown by facial expressions. Some change, some remain the same and others are in constant state of mobility. Regard- less of any circumstances these particular moments are special and will bring back memories of the sad ones, the quiet ones, the lonely ones, the happy ones, and the sometimes wacky ones, along with the dis- creet and the mysterious ones. Yes, we’ve got them all. Top Right: Drop ‘em, You're under arrest. Mid-Right: What does my horoscope say? Bottom Right: Oh no! Manny's bald spot. Top Left: | studied for this test | swear | did. Left: The new wave look. “The Best Is Yet То Be As wonderful as school days аге, So full of fun and laughter. The best and richest times we know, Will come a few years later. So we must close the door behind us, And as we turn away. We review the dreams and plans we've made. And hol d them fast today. Walk proudly as we move along. Feel young and strong and free. And let our hearts repeat these words, “The Best Is Yet To Ве.” Top Right: You know what his future profession is. Mid-Right: What did you say? Left: Laughing as usual, over the mad lips pad. Bottom: Hey look! A balancing act. Right: Oh God! О е more day of boredom. Bottom Right: “Did you hear that? What Center: Do | look funny or what? Top Left: Confused teenagers at work. Mid-Left: Say Corny! Bottom Left: Hide-n-seek Top Right: Wow! I'm really enjoying myself. Mid-Right: Muscles toned and untoned! Bottom Right: We are all Wet-n-Wild. Top Left: Whatever this is, it sure tastes good! Center: I’m just hanging around. Left: Life size, Life saver. | TIT TII III II DIES 44 Poconos” The annual excursion to the Poconos proved to be another smashing success Students and chaperons alike let “their hair down, (except for Messers Chill and DiFrancesco) and enjoyed themselves immensely by participating in a variety of activities. Horseback riding, for instance, attracted such a large number of Seniors that waiting time exceeded one full hour. Another popular gathering place, the swimming pool, provided hours of fun and frolic for many. The most exciting time however, was the disco dance where the glittering lights and rock and roll music drove frenzied dancers to exhaustion We shall not quickly forget the Toga party, Mr. Chill's exhortations to have fun whether we wanted to or not, for the quiet, sleepy trip home Top Left: I’m going to the games at the Colosseum. Mid-Left: Snow-grass tobogganing. Center: What about James! Right: A picture savs a thousand words. Bottom Left: The Three Stooges — Roman style. Bottom Right: l've just been elected to the Roman Senate. GRADUATE graj-(e)wet n. 1. Mr. Krolin will always be remembered for his unselfish gift of TIME. He always had time for us. He was never so far away that we could not reach out for him. Whenever we needed him, he was always there for us. He lived to help us realize our full creative potential, and we did just that, over and over again. Each time we rose to new heights, we were inspired to achieve through his example of com mitment, dedication, and pursuit of perfection. Mr. Zarro’s kind, caring, gentle, presence made us feel safe, loved, and secure He was the father figure so many of us needed. We excelled simply because he did, and he expected us to do the same. We looked forward each day to his class, where we were gently, but, so ever firmly encouraged to be the best we could be! All of us who have been inspired by the unique capabilities of Mr. Krolin and Mr. Zarro will never forget them for the aura of their spirit will be with us forever; however it saddens us to reflect that these hallowed halls will echo nevermore to the physical sound of their laughter and their sage words of advice and love Requiat In Pace IN APPRECIATION There is someone special who devoted much time and work making our Class events fun and successful. Someone who in his twenty-eight years of teaching has been a class advisor for twenty-five of those years. In all of that time he never said he didn't have the time to answer questions. He never neglected his charge as “Dutch Uncle” to his Seniors, making sure that their final year at East Side would be mem orable Mr. Chill is a teacher as well as a friend. If anyone had a problem, whether it be personal or school related, he is always willing to discuss it even with all his running around selling trinkets, shirts, plush toys, Florida trips and Poconos trips, he still finds a moment or two to just sit and advise His attention and patience will not soon be forgotten. The Class of 1989 expresses its sincere gratitude to the dedication Mr. Leonard Chill gives to East Side High School IN RECOGNITION Dr. Raymond Lindgren, a former East side student himself, has been teaching mathematics at East Side for the past fifteen years. He has always directed his energy and effort to encourage all of his students to attain academic excellence. In addition to his classroom duties, Dr Lindgren has been active with the Parent Teacher's Student Organization and continues to be a strong supporter о! the Winterguard, contributing unselfishly of his time and managerial ability to that stellar organization. Dr. Lindgren has been one of the outstanding positive forces behind East Side students. During times of need he has proven to be dependable and concerned for the individual as well as for the cause of education. Reaching out and helping people are two of his ideals. Dr. Lindgren can not only be looked upon as an adult to a student but also as a special friend. His sense of humor is also a great sign of his friendliness. The Class of '89 takes this moment to give Dr. Lindgren the recognition he richly deserves. FOOTBALL ү + ie д = LA И, 3 Чч After a couple of seasons of trying to build a strong foundation and the right chemistry for the football team, coach Russell took the team to a Co- Championship of the Newark City League with a city record of 4-1. This marked the first city title the East Side Red Raiders clinched since 1974. This accomplishment surprised everybody except the coach and the team. ТКАСК ТЕАМ The Track tradition continues for the East Side run- ners. Most athletes find it difficult to excel in both academics and in sports; but our runners have ex- ceeded their abilities in the classroom and in Track throughout the state. When these tremendous athletes joined the team they had one thing in mind and that was to be the best. They have proved that they are among the best in the State numerous times. Outstanding seniors who have broken many records in their Raiders Run are: Paula Vagueiro, Jamie Zavala, Stockley Palmer, and Jamal Salaam. Paula Vagueiro has won twenty-five championships while at East Side. Paula came to East Side from Por- tugal. She was ranked number one in New Jersey, an exceptional runner placing first in the Eastern States, Spingarn of Washington, D.C. and Felton, Delaware. Paula was selected to All State first team honors in her sophomore year, and junior and senior year. Jaime Zavala's specialty are the 400 meters to the two miles. Jaime helped East Side win the Newark City Leagues Essex County, NJSIAA No. II Group IV, NJSIAA Group IV, Sprngarn and Felton, Delaware meets. The team was ranked number six in New Jersey in 1989. East Side Track mile relay ranked number three in New Jersey with a 3:25.0 timing. Stockley Palmer and Jamal Salaam are the field event men. They came to East Side from Vailsburg High School. At East side they participated in the shot put, discus throwing and the javelin. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams canned one victory after another. Every individual has endured much hard work and frustration. Each team member spent many hours of their spare time at practice to achieve such challenging goals and the attainment of countless records. The seniors have won a City Championship, an Essex County Championship and a State Championship every year since 1981 here at the Raider Run. Other Raider Run members are: JUNIORS — Paul Lamerinhas, Carlos Rivera, Edwin Marfisi, Carla Martins, Teresa Lagido, Eurek Hinds, Hortense Oliveira, Jose Couto, Antonio Lourenco. SOPHOMORES — Pichard Rivera, Dorian Fenner, Shelby Walton, Marquel Thomas, Frank Dunkins, Kenyatta Jackson, Kaduma Leaf, Emerson Huntbey, Carla Fernandes, Siegrid Ratte, Rui Martins, Luisa Rodrigues. Paula has been one of the best known performers in virtually every category of women’s mid- die distance running in the State of New Jersey. She has dominated the cross coun- try indoor and outdoor track circuit from 1986 to and including 1989. She has held the title of most valuable runner, elected to All State first team in 1988 and 1989 in both cross country and track. Among the most important of her accomplishments are taking Lake Forest Delaware Cham- pionship 1989; the Spingarn Washington D.C. Championship 1988 and 1989; New- ark City League Championship mile and two mile 1987, 1988 and 1989; Essex County Champion in the two mile 1987, 1988, 1989; NJSIAA State Champion two mile 1988 and 1989. Many runners have benefited from the experience. Paula has come to realize the importance of Sports- manship and competition. With these ac- complishments and achievements in her background, Paula will certainly succeed in life. The disappointment of an off- season not withstanding, the players showed their true gut as they consistently dug down for that last surge to remain competitive. Under the direction of coaches Tom Wichowski, Phil Selenger, and Pete Wilczak, the boys gave a good account of them- selves. The outstanding players are Jamie Kmetz, the team's leading scorer, and Claudio Ribau, a goalie whose improvement is apparent as each season passes.
