Michele (ioncalve and Tommy Burger meeting between classes 2 Introduction A Day At East Side A typical day at East Side is not just your ordinary day. Students come to school as early as 8:00 in the morning to enjoy the fresh air and to meet their friends. At 8:20 the doors of the school open and students in a frenzy rush to their lockers. While conversing in the hallways, the homeroom bell rings and the day begins. From that point on. serious studying begins and the student’s will to learn grows intently. As each class ends, the hallways are swarmed with students laughing and chatting with one another before the next class. The highlight of the day for every East Sider is lunchtime. It provides free time for every student not only for lunch but to talk with one another or use the time to study at the library. Anticipation grows as 2:30 approaches. Students exiting the building hurry off to work, participate in clubs or athletic activities, and still others hang out in the park. So you see. East Siders combine education with laughter and excitement. Making the Grade High school is the place students learn to set goals. Those who wish to have a satisfying career in the future have realized that working hard pays off. To apply to college or a specialty school they must first achieve ideals at East Side. Then they will be ready for the real world and any obstacles set before them. Every day students enjoy meeting and joking with friends, but then must ready themselves for work. The curriculum provided at East Side can be quite challenging. The teachers try their best to open the minds and hold the interest of their students. Book reports, math assignments, and tough tests are just a few of the methods they use to assist us in our pursuit of one thing — a good education. Mike Rodrigue reads up on the growth of American industry. Dana lackson gets ready for his next class. Ana Taveres and Claudia Santos carefully prepare for an experiment in Chemistry Lab. 5 Making the Grade 6 Looking Back Lidia Malm gathering daydreams Looking Back If you ask East Side seniors what they remember most about their high school years, you will surely hear as many different answers, as there arc different and distinct personalities who attended this school. However, you may discover that many of the replies will sound familiar, almost second guessing your own. Most will look back and think of thoir friends, their classes, and their teachers. Some will remember all the activities and parties they attended: many of that special boyfriend or girlfriend. Others might remember the good times they had doing mischievous things, like cutting school. It doesn't make much difference because these are usual high school memories. What makes them special in this instance is that they were enjoyed and shared at East Side High School. Orlando Acevado and Evelyn Camacho sharing a moment of mutual admiration. Roller Skating Rink in Wayne. N.J. The event began at 9:00 p.m. However. East Side seniors eagerly waited to gain on-trance in the cold night air much earlior. After they entered the rink, many hurriedly rented their skates and strapped them on. The music echoed throughout the place. Who was going to be the first skater? A few kids ventured onto the skating floor which soon became crowded. Facial expressions showod uncertainty but their lively spirits insured a good time. The rest of the night was simply fun. The music intensified. Faster and faster they skated. An occasional fall did not stop these fearless skaters. They rose with dignity, continued skating and never looked back. As the evening came to a close, many were reluctant to leave. It was great. Let’s get Mrs. Salagaj to have another roller skating party soon! said one senior. Forever Young The tables were arranged and the red carpet was laid out. Everyone had been waiting impatiently for this night to arrive. Months and months of planning went into this gala. May 1.1987 would be an evening of enchantment at the Mediterranean Manor. At first, the junior prom was just a fantasy, but now it became a reality. As the limousines, filled with happy faces, approached the entrance of the restaurant, bulbs of cameras flashed from all directions. Everyone knew that would remain in their memories forever. The climax of this spectacular evening occurred when the theme song Forever Young” was played. Everyone danced quietly cheek to cheek. Just as Cinderella returned to the real world at midnight, so did these couples return to being white horses and pumpkins. The fairy tale had ended on a happy note. It was a night of glamour and excitement. The audience grew impatient and the cast became nervous. The curtain was about to ring up. Months and months of preparation had gone into this production. Students under the direction of Mr. Krolin performed as they never had before. There were numerous acts. The audience saw representations of everything from the Supremos to Billy Idol. The students outdid themselves as they modeled the latest fashions of the year. Chic sportswear, daring swimwear and glittering eveningwear were shown. The audience applauded heartily as the show came to a close. An exhausted but exhilarated cast basked in its triumph. Look at me. It was a night for the guys to show their psychedelic shorts and the girls their teeny weeny bikinis. Only Hast Siders would dare to be different by wearing their summer best in the middle of winter. At first, the |unior Splash Party was tinged with awkwardness. Traditional toe-dipping in the water took place. But soon enough the pool was filled with bright smiling faces and the uncanny Hast Side spirit shone through. If you didn't look over your shoulder now and then, you would find yourself taking an unexpected bath. There were activities to suit everyone's taste: relaxing in the sauna, dancing, enjoying the buffet, or joining the conga line in the pool. As the party was ending, it was difficult to convince the pruny people to come out of the water. After all. we needed time to prepare to leave the tropical environment provided by Holiday Inn to bear the 30 weather outside. The Splash Party was our first taste of the privileges of being upperclassmen and certainly one of the most memorable. The crowd that swim together, stay together 18 Making Waves A cold and dreary night lured Hast Side Seniors to the only place where excitement was brewing. The Date — December 4. 1987, The Time — 7:30 p.m.. The Place — Holiday Inn. It's Partytime! The Senior Splash Party was wild from the beginning. Those near the pool unrobed to display outlandish swimwear. Some lounged with their friends, while others dived in the water. All were entertained by the Surfin-Turfin” tunes form the D. |. Booth. The sauna provided a warm atmosphere away from the pool frolics. The Box gave many a chance to relax. (.rumbling stomachs were satisfied by the tempting buffet. Manners were forgotten in the rush to eat quickly and return to the pool. Some daredevils attempted difficult leaps and dives but most played beachball or just splashed around. Under the guidance and leadership of class advisor Mrs. Salagaj and the dedication of our officers and representatives. our senior year was a memorable one. The Student Council is a group of very dedicated individuals. Every year they succeed in giving East Side students a reason to be proud of their school. They have sponsored food drives for the needy. They organized Senior and Junior Recognition Days to rally school spirit. They also operate the popular Trading Post. Advised by Mrs. Matarrazo. the Student Council is a great asset to East Side. The club also competes in the NJ Mathematics League This allows the students to excel in a competitive atmosphere amongst other high schools in the state During the course of the year the students hold fund raisers to provide income to finance their annual trip. Some of the places the club has visited are Washington. DC and Philadelphia. Pa. 25 Volleyball Club Our most innovative and unprecedented club is the volleyball club. It's great fun and a perfect after school sport to engage in. The club is separated into six teams which compete competitively with one another. This allows the students to burn off some steam after a hard day's work of school. Small payments are paid by each player to provide trophies for their accomplishments and perhaps a festive party. Once you are enrolled into the club you may never want to leave it. The Track Club This club is different from any other. It’s goal is sending the crosscountry and track teams on as many out of state meets as possible. The purpose is to expose the teams to different environments of competition. The club supports the love and competing ambition of the team by having fundraisers such as selling calendars, pins, and putting on dances. All this support is worthwhile. as our East Side track team continues to hold a winning record. Mr. Ollie Dickerson — advisor. Ana Cravo — president. Sandra Martins — vice president. The first major fall project was the chapter's participation in the We l.ove Newark poster contest. In December plans were put into effect for a fund-raiser, a candy sale. Through this sale the chapter could then meet several goals; the first of which was a donation to a community project, the Grater Newark Christmas Fund, as well as for the purchase of the National Art Society items. In January a second poster dealing with Brotherhood Week was undertaken by the members and certificates of participation were received by Paul Cerqueira. Lionel Costa and Catarina Dias. March brought a third poster project dealing with the Art of Recycling which was greeted with much enthusiasm by the members. Some additional service activities planned for the remainder of the school year include helping with each month’s bulletin board display in the media center. Maria Bastos and Catarina Dias began this service project in February. Selection and preparation of art work for the Van Buren Branch Library and the school lobby showcase in conjunction with your art month in March continues to keep Paul Cerqueira. Sorting through pictures and selecting their placement in the book can be a rewarding task. Each member contributes his or her talents to special sections of the book. However, organizing a yearbook can also be one big headache: approaching deadlines, early morning meetings and plain hard work. One thing you do learn by the time the year is through is the art of compromise. One person alone does not create a great yearbook. It is the result of many people’s dedication and best effort. When the book is finally complete, our only reward is the satisfaction of a job well done and the hope that all w’ill enjoy it. Making sure Ihey are both satisfied with their layout Anabela Da Silva and Maria Velesttgui give it a final check. Hard working typists Karen Suarez. Mane Barbosa. Sue Cunha and Dawn Blaszak. Our first rate student photographers. Albino Bola and Klmina Soares, provided most of the memorable pictures appearing in the book. 31 East Side Winter Guard East Side is one of only two east coast winterguards that come from inner-city schools. While most high school winterguards receive financial support form their school systems. East Side has been almost totally self-supporting from the start. Winterguard practice starts as soon as school begins in the fall, and continues through the end of May. During that time the guard practices at least 4 days a week, and 2 hours a day. Members are also encouraged to participate in all aspects of school life. Each year several members are elected as class or student council officers, and there is always at least 1 editor on the school newspaper from the guard. The East Side Winterguard provides a special opportunity for its members. It enables them to grow, to succeed, and to interact with young people from across the country. East Side Hockey Team 82 In Memoriam The Class of 1988 respectfully dedicates its yearbook to the memory of Donato ‘'Pete” Del Guercio. Mr. Del Guercio served Hast Side well and long, earning the respect of his colleagues and the love of his students. Mr. Del Guercio began teaching in Newark as an elementary teacher in 1953. His career was interrupted in 1956 when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Mr. Del Guercio resumed his teaching career in 1958. earned a Master's Degree at Seton Hall University, taught physical education and coached football at Malcolm X Shabazz High School before coming to East Side as department chairperson and football coach. Mr. Del Guercio was taken from us suddenly in |une. 1987. We miss him but we shall always remember him. Through the years. East Side has progressed academically and physically, offering her students a greater opportunity to excel in a pleasant environment. Just a few years ago. two new buildings were constructed and attached to the original building. New programs were added to the curriculum. Among these were the A.P. English and E.S.O.P. programs. These additions were brought about in part by the efforts of the present administration, who work industriously to encourage all students to achieve their endeavors. The administration is an integral factor which contributes to continued high standards of performance among East Siders. 64 Guidance Department Youth may be described with one term: confusion. Teenagers are continuously faced with decisions, but are many times unsure of themselves. That’s where the assistance of a guidance counselor is vital. The guidance department aids students in figuring out their schedules, making college choices, inquiring about special student opportunities and even listening to personal problems a student may have. Most importantly, they prepare students for the complex problems of the future. Karen Suarez discusses college with Mrs Rosen. Mr. Peter Lardieri. Primitive man. however crudely, showed his appreciation for the arts. As time has passed we have continued to demonstrate this appreciation for the fine arts. Through the improvement of technique and interpretation of life, art has added to our culture. Creative talents should not go unnoticed, therefore students are encouraged to express their artistic abilities by taking courses in fine or graphic arts, photography or music performance. They are to be commended for their success in these areas. Paula Amaral hold up a painting by Antonio Pereira. 67 Mr Baione instructs guitar. English Department Developing an intellectual mind is a top priority at East Side. Students sample various literary styles and types of writing, broaden vocabulary, write, speak in standard English, and exercise their own creative talents. From William Shakespeare's complex characters to Edgar Allan Poe’s chilling short stories, students learn of the diverse cultural characteristics reflected in their works as well as the differences in thought occurring in each era. With the encouragement of the English Department, our students become adept at attaining those intellectual pursuits. Mrs. Giantimosi reviews homework, Mrs. T. Staples. To prepare students for the many mathematical integrated fields which exist today. East Side offers courses in Algebra. Geometry. Calculus. Trigonometry. and Computer mathematics. Apart from learning formulas and theorems. students may also learn such programming languages as Basic or Pascal. When presented with complex problems in the future, students will be able to formulate logical solutions using the knowledge from these math courses. Mr . Young corrects homework.. Physical Education and Health Developing a healthy mind and body is essential to function properly in today's world. Students are offered the opportunity to relieve their tensions through exercise. They take part in sports such as volleyball, softball, basketball, and soccer. Not only do students exercise their bodies, but also scoring procedures and terms pertaining to these sports. Best of all they learn to share their victories and defeats with their teammales. In health classes, students are taught about the human body and its afflictions, first aid procedures and every teenager's necessity — driver's education.
