That Fabulous Night This year, the music depart ment. along with the winter-guard. presented a spring concert. It was held on June 12th. 1985. both in the auditorium and the gym. The students were seated on the stage, and the orchestra began the show with the playing of the national anthem. As the concert progressed, the band, directed by Mr. Sutura and Mr. Cleveland, delighted the audience with such songs as. Through The Years. Time After Time. Holding Out For A Hero and Flash Dance. In order to put together such Keeping to the beat. Michael Dellkat enlivens the presentation. super entertainment requires many hours of practice and hard work on the part of both music teachers and band members. The music department offers East Siders a chance to develop both their interests and abilities by offering choices of bands, such as rock or jazz, in which to play. During intermission. Mr. Sutura and Mr. Cleveland were presented with awards of appreciation from the students. They were more than pleased to accept their awards, but they said. Credit for the music performed belongs to the students . They acknowledged and applauded the students for their performance. Finally, the jazz band played the last song and everyone proceeded to the gym for an interesting performance by the win-terguard. As far as everyone was concerned, the winterguard's performance was a perfect ending to a spectacular evening. Academics 19

English Takes A New Step As the new year started, the English department added one more class to the twelfth grade curriculum. The English Advanced Placement class, or English AP as it is commonly referred to. was established for a select group of seniors: those who had demonstrated their abilities in their three previous years of English. Unlike the other honor classes. this class was established to present a more college - like atmosphere. Students are being geared towards a collegiate way of learning, with more lectures and more reading. Mr. DiFran-cesco was chosen to teach this class and underwent a series of classes at Manhattan College in order to become more acquainted with this new material. Mr. DiFrancesco’s ideas were quickly put into motion as his class began to read more and more novels. Writing is also a vital part of this class and Mr. DiFrancesco soon dictated countless essay topics. This program was set up in order to help East Side seniors adjust to the rigorous and sometimes overwhelming freshman year of English at college. The class is not very large, however, with Mr. DiFrancesco's help and encouragement along with the tenacity and dedication of the students, this pioneer program will definitely encase itself within the regular English classes that a graduating senior may become a part of.
