£a t Side High School Torch 1986 Volume 127 1911 1986: THEN AND NOW On November T5.1908. a resolution was proposed for the building of East Side High School. The school was organized and opened on the first of February in 1911 for its first term, at the Market Street Annex. The following April the school moved to the new building with an enrollment of about 450 students coming from all parts of the city. Now. 75 years later. East Side has an enrollment of approximately 1600 along with three buildings. Courses of study offered in 1911 were the General or Classical, which prepared the students for college; the Commercial for those students interested in a business career; the Technical, which helped prepare boys for industries and trained girls in the arts and sciences for the purpose of practical home-keeping. Today. East Side has become very diversified in its course offerings. No longer are girls given only cooking courses in order to become better homemakers. Today, every student has a chance to select what courses they wish to study in addition to a required program. Another area which varies greatly with the past is athletics. There was a time when the only physical activities available for girls to participate in was basketball. field hockey, and dance class, while the boys were involved in baseball, football, hockey, basketball. track and tennis. Today, girls are participating and competing in all areas of athletic activities. In the past, evening school was also offered to those who wanted and needed to complete their education. Among the standard subjects of English and Math, carpentry, pattern making, wood turning, sheet metal work, forging, bookkeeping, stenography, typewriting. dressmaking, millinery, housekeeping, and cooking were offered. This aspect of East Side’s 75 year history has not changed drastically. East Side still offers area residents the chance to complete their high school education. Today. English and Math are still available to the new wave of immigrants to the city; however, these courses are now called Adult Education Classes. As time went by, educational ideas and needs began to change and expand - and so did East Side. Today. 75 years later. East Side has developed into a multi-facated and diverse urban high school. It may be bigger, the students may be more ethnically diverse, but the original goal remains intact; a strong desire to offer students the opportunity for the best possible education that began in the mind and hearts of those members of the Newark Board of Education in 1908. when they put forth the resolution to build a high school, to be called East Side, in the city of Newark. We the class of 1986. now take our place as part of the history of that resolution issued so long ago. Just as those who have gone before us. we are now part of a special legacy. As a class, we have shared many memorable events, but perhaps the most special to us is that we graduate during the 75th anniversary of our school. In order to commemorate this auspicious occasion, special pictures have been reproduced for your enjoyment. Then And HI 1911 1986: THE WAY IT WAS Over the years East Side has had some changes. Some were drastic and some were very minor. Of course, some changes were necessary, while others were natural steps in improvement. However, some things have been altered to a point where you would have never known they existed unless they were obvious. One example is the boys' gym. In 1911. gym was held on the third floor in C‘ building. It was. and still is. quite spacious with many windows. Shower baths were locat- ed near one door and ample dressing rooms were also used. Boys’ showers were located above the girls’ bathing facilities. Today, this gym is used mainly for gymnastics. Showers are no longer part of the average gym period. Girls and boys also have their respective gyms, but co-edu-cational classes do exist. One area which has changed is the art program. Students still sit down to draw and paint. Granted, today's techniques and supplies are more varied, but the same basic ideas related to drawing and painting are still in use. Another area which has changed somewhat is the drama department. Productions in the early years of our school were more detailed, whereas today, specific detail does not hold as much importance. There are similarities. such as the drive and dedication that the students have for the production of these dramas. 1911 was the beginning of a destiny, one in which we now find An early drama production performed by talented Modern tv Then And Now Contents Introduction History Student Life....... East Siders are always striving for the top with many hours of hard work and dedication with the hope of attaining that special goal. That is what the class of '86 is about, striving to attain goals, and by doing so adding a bit of sparkle to our surroundings. That spark was ignited 75 years ago. and although times have changed, the basic beliefs and principles for a chance to acquire an education still stand as they did then. It is hard to believe that East Side has weathered so many storms for the past seven and a half decades. We have undergone many changes, but our goals are not so different from that very first graduating class so long ago. Four years ago we came to this school and were called fresh- 3 Theme DIAMONDS men.” We were nor very sure of ourselves because everything was so new and different. We were able to overcome many difficulties and challenges, so that four years later, we are the graduates of 86. East Side will always hold a special place in our memories as we continue to pursue our goals and careers. We surely will come to realize, with special thanks, those teachers who pushed us that extra mile.” and we will have special thoughts for those who believed in us and helped us develop our unique and sparkling personalities. A very important part of our lives has been spent at East Side and we value the time and opportunity. We salute its endurance and traditions over the years and hope for 75 more in the wish that it will continue to enhance and fulfill the lives of all who will follow us and keep on sparkling like a diamond. It took many weeks of preparation to make it an enjoyable evening for everyone. Surely, the girls will never forget their aching feet as they hit shopping mall after shop-ping mall searching for that perfect dress and the guys will surely remember trying to build up enough nerve to ask that special someone . The weeks flew by and prom night finally arrived. At about seven o'clock the empty seats at the Mediterranean Manor began to fill. Everything looked beautiful. The white tablecloths, red napkins and flower centerpieces added that special touch, but that was nothing compared to the appearance of the students. Everyone looked stunning and seemed not to mind giving up leans and sneakers for the night. As the lights dimmed, the theme song Just One Touch was played and the couples headed for the dance floor. After that, things really started rolling. Dinner was served while D. J. Freddy Freak played. Crazy For You. After dinner. the dance floor was the main attraction where everyone was having fun doing their own special steps. The band consisted of sailers who travel to perform in different sections of the country for special occasions, assemblies and benefits. They entertained us with various selections from some of the most popular hits on the charts such as. I Can't bight This Eeeling. Lover Boy. Careless Whispers, and Desert Moon. The stage was crowded with wires, equipment, colored lights, and instruments, all needed for those special effects . As soon as the band struck the first chords and sang the opening words, the auditorium was filled with cheers and whistles. Juniors and Seniors alike clapped, sang and swayed to the overwhelming beats given out by the band which was invited to perform by our class advisor. Mrs. Glover. The program was a gigantic success filled with an hour of tunes in which each song sung had a different singer. This program was very entertaining. and the group was definitely terrific. They were given a standing ovation and applause to match. What a way to begin a school day, we really should have more live entertainment at East Side High. We will someday look back on all those hours spent hovering over a typewriter working on those dreaded term papers as well as nights spent cramming for finals and realize that it was all worth it. The sparkling diversity of subjects offered at East Side enables us to develop such outstanding qualities, as hard work, self-discipline and perseverence, that epitomize the very essence and spirit of our school. East Side’s academic diversity has grown throughout the years and there are many events which have helped make our years memorable; such as Mr. Molinaro’s famous tee-shirt with the quadratic formula printed on it, which will leave its mark in our memory bank. Or those times in foods class with Mrs. Johnson, when fifteen minutes could be spent trying to remove lumps from the pancake batter only to realize that they were part of the batter. At East Side, we value highly the various opportunities presented to us through our academic program. We look forward to the challenges ahead in the hope that our future will only be endowed with sparkling promises. 75th ANNIVERSARY Academics 17 18 Academics That Fabulous Night This year, the music depart ment. along with the winter-guard. presented a spring concert. The music department offers East Siders a chance to develop both their interests and abilities by offering choices of bands, such as rock or jazz, in which to play. During intermission. Mr. Sutura and Mr. Cleveland were presented with awards of appreciation from the students. They were more than pleased to accept their awards, but they said. Credit for the music performed belongs to the students . They acknowledged and applauded the students for their performance. Finally, the jazz band played the last song and everyone proceeded to the gym for an interesting performance by the win-terguard. As far as everyone was concerned, the winterguard's performance was a perfect ending to a spectacular evening. Academics 19 English Takes A New Step As the new year started, the English department added one more class to the twelfth grade curriculum. The English Advanced Placement class, or English AP as it is commonly referred to. was established for a select group of seniors: those who had demonstrated their abilities in their three previous years of English. Unlike the other honor classes. this class was established to present a more college - like atmosphere. Students are being geared towards a collegiate way of learning, with more lectures and more reading. Mr. DiFran-cesco was chosen to teach this class and underwent a series of classes at Manhattan College in order to become more acquainted with this new material. Mr. DiFrancesco’s ideas were quickly put into motion as his class began to read more and more novels. Writing is also a vital part of this class and Mr. DiFrancesco soon dictated countless essay topics. This program was set up in order to help East Side seniors adjust to the rigorous and sometimes overwhelming freshman year of English at college. The class is not very large, however, with Mr. DiFrancesco's help and encouragement along with the tenacity and dedication of the students, this pioneer program will definitely encase itself within the regular English classes that a graduating senior may become a part of. High Tech At the end of Junior year. East Side acquired three new machines. These machines, called Lanier Word Processors, were bought to teach word processing in the Secretarial and Office Practice classes. The acquisition of these new machines was made possible by the state, through the funding of this new project. These machines are used in double period classes. Mrs. Ruggori’s classes are now using the machines in order to expand their knowledge of business skills. However, with only three machines the students must take Mrs. Ruggeri's business class gets ready to begin the days assignments turns using the equipment, but the Business department is expecting ten additional IBM PC's in order to ease the demand. The machines are very versatile and can be used to teach additional subjects such as accounting and other business related topics. Mrs. Rugger! hopes to see word processing taught as a separate class in the near future. The new machines resemble computers, but they are much easier to use. Like a computer, disks are used, but these disks show how to use the computers and give exams as well. Manuals come along with the new equipment and many new and different ideas can be put onto the screen. The Business Department is expanding the field of business technology for all business students and with the help of the newest'' technology, the students are well equipped for the future. The Basic Skills program, which is federal and state funded, was formed in order to assist students who needed extra help in reading and mathematical skills. This program is geared toward all students who need help, regardless of their grade, and is based Mr. Scardeli. who launched the basic skills program at East Side, smiles proudly as the program continues its success. on CTBS and MBS scores. Mr. Scardeli, who launched this program, is very positive about the program's succes. He thinks if the student really wants to learn, this program will be a definite help. These classes are geared to help the individual and enable the students to work at their own pace, with the student slowly building up their own skills. The students are tested frequently and are aided with audio visual materials. As the year concludes, a student may be released from this program if they achieve a certain score above the cut-off rate. With all the dedication and hard work put into this program, it will definitely succeed. As Mr. Scardeli says. “If you think, you will survive.” Explaining the assignment. Mrs. Young tries to imvolve everyone in the classroom lesson. 24 Academics SPORTS Sports at East Side are a very important part of our school life, and we are very competitive in a variety of athletic events. Our soccer team opened the sports season and showed how proficient they were when it came to winning one title after another. The football team also proved themselves winners this year and champs to be reckoned with. East Side’s track team has won a variety of local as well as national titles and competitions such as the Penn State Relays, several meets in Washington, D.C., and a special track event in San Antonio, Texas. In the winter months, our ice hockey team, along with the boys' and girls’ basketball teams also showed a fighting “spirit.” As Spring arrived, our golf and tennis teams practiced long and hard for action on both the course and court. The baseball team once again took another City League Championship after competing against all the other teams in the district. Our well conditioned athletes are really the biggest reason that our teams have developed such winning ways. Regardless of the season, when our athletes competed for various district, state, and national titles, we began to get caught up in the grip of East Side’s “Sports Fever.” 75th ANNIVERSARY Sport 27 Victory Again! Team Proves Their Worth The baseball team went Into the 1985 season thinking that this would be a rebuilding year. Due to the faci that many players were Seniors who graduated. Coach Bias! had thoughts of platooning the new members of the team In order for them to gain experience. But to the surprise of many, the players came through with hard work and determination, plus a winning attitude. This enabled the team to come away with the City League Championship under their belts while posting an outstanding 11-1 record. Coach Blasi said, “that the key to many of the victories and eventually the winning of the championship was the attitude of the players. The players outlook for each game was. Let's go out there and get them, and that’s just what they did.” The most outstanding players on the team were Carlos Cruz, whose 7-3 record led the team, and Angelo Sanchez, who had a 6-5 record. Between these two athletes. they carried the team by pitching twenty-one out of twenty-five games that were played. Offensively. Angelo Sanchez and Jose Alvarado tied for the tetm lead with .410 batting averages and Carlos Cruz had a good year at the plate finishing at .374 The highlight of the year came at the end of the season when. Carlos Cruz, Angelo Sanchez and Jose Alvarado were elected to the All-City first team, and Carlos Cruz was elected to the All-County team, honors which are only given to truly outstanding athletes. Coach Blasi is looking forward to the return of starters Herlander Amorin and Jose Alvarado. Along with them, there will be many players competing to make the starting team. ‘‘If these new starters play with the same attitude as the old starters. This Incredible team has battled back from last place in the City League, because of earnest concentration and extreme dedication. This team of hard working athletes, coached by Ms. Werner, tied with Weequahic High in the final City League game of the season. They settled for third place at 9-4-1 behind Barringer High and Vailsburgh High, who tied for first place and the championship. When asked about the team. Coach Werner replied. I attribute the success of this year’s team to two major factors: The players from last year who gained experience in their losses of a year ago and to the addition of new players with talent”. Coach Werner seemed to be ecstatic about the drive and determination that her team has shown in putting that losing season behind them and giving East Side a softball team to be proud of. East Side had to settle for third place this year. However, there are a few extra special highlights of the 1985 season. Senior Aileen Molina was voted to the “All-City team for her outstanding performance at third base and senior Adrianna Vasquez was elected to the All-City and All-County teams for her spectacular display of talent in the outfield. Kyro Inman and Victor Cruz shared the duties at the quarterback and running back positions. Their sparkling passing and running techniques helped to lead East Side to one victory after another. Other players who contributed to the attack were; Paul Alves, who played the linebacker position on defense and the tight end position on offense; Herlander Amorin. who also played linebacker, doubled as the team's punter; Doug Odom was sparkling at linebacker and at guard. Fernando Linhares was an all-around player at center, guard, and defensive end. Jose Cunha played outside linebacker. Renaldo Hernandez played defensive tackle. William Powell played tackle. Leon Phillips played cornerback and Joseph Bezak played on special teams. The defense proved to be very agile while cutting down plays before they even had a chance to get started. The offense was constantly finding new ways to out-maneuver the opponents defense and go in for the score. The team deserves congratulations on a job well done. Although losing the City Championship game to Vailsburg High, our athletes showed great form and a fighting spirit. In the game with Vailsburg, East Side kept control of the ball for just about the entire contest but failed to score on numerous opportunities that were created. East Side has played some very experienced teams this year, which made it very difficult to come out on top as the team has so often done before. Players who have shown outstanding abilities were co-captains Richard Agostinho and Manny Silva. Also, goalkeeper Miguel Pin-ho was always ready to make those saves. These individuals gave the team that needed “spark to win on many occasions. They held the players together and helped show what teamwork was all about. Previously, they had won a major division championship. but they have turned that streak for the better by winning two championships in the last two years. This sport was introduced Into our extra-curricular activities in 1970. Since then, the team has built itself up and has become stronger and stronger every year. One result of this is the winning of the 1983-84 C Division Championship and the 1984-85 Handchen Cup. an award that is given to the Champion of the American Conference play-offs. The most outstanding player on this exciting team must be Ronnie Blozen. His amazing play at Center and his phenomenal scoring ability has led East Side to many victories. Ronnie was the captain of the team and was also elected to ths All-State second team at the center position Another outstanding player is Todd Blozen. His great 2.49 goals-against average has held many teams to very few scores and helped lead the team to victory. In my opinion, one other player should be mentioned. His name is Carlos Rodriguez. Although he had not started off every game, his outstanding play on the ice, whenever called on, was among the best on the team. He should be commended for his play and his leadership as co-captain of the team. It was called the “Orient”, and the main force behind the activity was the school’s principal, Mr. Kennedy. Other clubs soon followed such as, the Arts and Crafts Club, which was formed for those students who wanted to extend their education in manual work. A girls' Glee club and boys’ Glee club were also formed to give students the opportunity to show their music ingenuity. Through the years, clubs and activities have changed because of the various interests of the student body. Whether it is student government, Higher Math or Civics, East Siders have a variety of clubs that they may participate in. Some clubs allow members to be of service in their school, their community or their peers. Students are always encouraged to join a club as long as such activities do not interfere with schoolwork. Experiencing this aspect of school life adds another dimension to a student’s personal growth, as well as interest and sparkle to our years at East Side. 75th ANNIVERSARY Clubs Activities 49 Let The Fun Begin Senior class member enjoying a game of water football in the Olympic size pool at the Holiday Inn. Mayl e the sun and sand are missing, but a Splash Party is the next best replacement and with Footluill season action so close, who could resist going to watch the East Side team bring home a victory. As the Seniors await graduation. we manage to fill our time with zany excitement and unexpected surprises. Our Splash Party provided the perfect excuse to go a little wild before June. As we drove to the Holiday Inn on Route 1 9. we anxiously awaited the time when we would Ik together, splashing around in the Olympic size swimming pool. The heated pool and wonderful buffet made the evening worthwhile. While in the pool, we were able to brush up on our swimming skills as well as the proper way to splash each other. An exciting game of water football was formed, and it was quite challenging trying to tackle people in a pool. Relay races were also a part of the fun. as we desper- ately struggled to reach the other end of the pool. As the evening came to a close, we all went into our saunas to change, a hint of sadness was in the air; we were sad about leaving, but soon our eyes sparkled as we learned about plans for another party. For those who prefer outdoor activity. East Side football games provide just the right kind of excitement. We look forward to attending the games so that we can cheer the team on. While at a football game, one can not help but notice an Indian running around the stands and near the field. Could this be Tonto? No. this is East Side’s very-own Indian mascot. Actually, it is just a costume worn by Clifford Williams. Our little Indian gets the spectators to join him in cheering the team on. With his unique moves and actions, Clifford entertains the crowd as well as boosts school spirit. As the East Side Colorguard and Marching Band wave that East Side Banner, you can be sure that East Side’s Mascot will be there leading the way. Red itnd whit worn with pride at same time. The Servettes Club is an organization in which members help at various school functions. Seminars are held to improve leadership skills and workshops are given in order to enhance the students abilities for various jobs. Members give assistance wherever they are needed. If library assistance is what you need, you can always depend on the members of the Library Club. These students volunteer to help the librarians check books in and out and shelve them during their lunch hour. When a librarian is unavailable, members help students look for materials such as books, films, and magazines. The Library Club is a perfect example of “students helping students” at East Side. The Civics Club offers students the opportunity to develop pride for themselves, school and community. This club is credited with various fund-raisers such as the Christmas Dance and the Battle of the D J.’s Dance. Money is donated to deserving school organizations who may need financial assistance. An end of the year dinner is sponsored and special awards are given to outstanding members of the club. 64 Club Service The responsibility for the representation of students falls on the shoulders of the Student Council. The students must strike that delicate balance between the want of students and what the school administration believes are their needs. As spokes persons for the entire student body, the Student Council offers their ideas and suggestions from the student point of view. The Council does its best to help our school run more efficiently and effectively. The newspaper staff is cred-ted with the writing of the school newspaper. This year The Announcer had a new look with a change of printes. The members report school events to keep the students informed about current events. The Announcer covers a wide variety of topics such as dances, sports, seniors and their very own comic section. Members of the staff work hard to produce an interesting paper. To develop the mastery of the Portuguese languge on a writing level, the Portuguese Literary magazine offers you the opportunity to write in Portuguese. For example, many students take the typing course because it is a skill that is very useful in many business situations as well as for personal use. The Business Department this year, has introduced the use of word processors in the secretarial classes. The secretarial classes consist of double periods so that students may take turns practicing on the “Lanier word processors. Thus far. there are three I-anier word processors, but the Business Department is expecting ten more IBM PCs in the near future. This will enable many other students to have exposure to the newest technology. Mrs. Rugger! said. In the future, we hope to teach word processing as a separate class. In this way, students will have more time to master the skills needed to operate the processors, and have a better opportunity for jobs in the business world. It was founded in the 1600's by people seeking religious freedom. Today, Newark continues to have thriving ethnic areas, as well as art, culture, and entertainment. At the top of any agenda for a vistor is the area known as the “Ironbound . During any given week day, the commercial area, located on either side of Ferry St., teems with shoppers. Here one can find fresh vegetables and fruit stores with outdoor stands along with bakeries and seafood stores. Although most of the area is Portuguese and Hispanic, a bazaar-of-all nations atmosphere is spiced with other ethnic specialties. For many visitors, the Ironbound is known for its restaurants, which offer a variety of Portuguese cuisine. Along with the variety of commercial enterprise, East Side High School also stands out as a major portion of this close-knit community. East Siders are very active in their community. Whether it is tutoring children at the Ironbound Educational and Cultural Center, or helping to organize the annual senior citizens luncheon given by the Student Council, East Siders have shown their concern and involvement in their community. The devotion and assistance to the community given by East Siders proves their willingness to interact and grow with other influences outside of high school. By becoming involved in the Ironbound, East Siders have shown that the two different worlds can be brought together into one sparkling environment. 75th ANNIVERSARY Community 141 Friends Share Memories Sunday. But the year also produced moments, so singularly its own that they will always define $6 in the corridors of our memories: the earthquake in Mexico that killed 20.000 people and that fight against Apartheid m South Africa. In America, it was the year for heroism and the revival of patriotism as Rocky IV and Rambo hit the movie theatres. Abroad. President Ferdinand Marcos was ousted from the Phillipines. volcanic erruptions buried a town of 25.000 in Columbia, there was continued famine in Ethiopia and the hijacking of the AchiHe Lauro’'. an Italian cruise liner in which one American was killed. But in welcome relief from a world of bruising turmoil, there was a summit between President Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachov to discuss world peace. In this article, we would like to hold up the Kaleidoscope that was 1986 so you can look back and remember. Terrorism made a definite impact in 1986 with several hiiackings. The TWA flight that was taken to Beirut had a happy ending with the release of all hostages, but not until one U.S. sailor. Robert Dean Stethem. was killed. The Italian cruise liner. Achielle Lauro '. also fell into the hands of terrorists, as the ship was captured and one American. Leon Kling hoffer. was murdered and thrown overboard. Terrorism continued as Shi-ite hqackers destroyed a Jordanian airliner after releasing all 71 passengers on board. Nature also made a statement in 1986 as disasters in Mexico and Columbia killed many people. The killer quake in Mexico city left 20.000 dead and a volcanic erruption buried a town of 25.000 people in Columbia. Political upheavals continued in 1986 with the removal of Phillipines President Ferdinand Marcos. In South Africa, vio lence erupted as the war against Apartheid waged on. The fight against the famine in Ethiopia continued as Bob Geldof helped to organize the historic Live Aid concerts, one in London and one in Philadelphia, that were broadcasted to one billion plus TV viewers around the world. The concerts featured artist such as Tina Turner. Mick Jagger. Bob Dylan. David Bowie, and Elton John, just to name a few. 1986 was also a year of farewell as we bid good bye to Rock Hugson. Yul Brynner. who starred for many years in The king and I”. Orson Wells, who would sell no wine before its time and Samantha Smith, the thirteen year old whose letter to the Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, catulpulled her into an emmisary for peace. With all the serious political debtes and upheavals in 1986. it was almost a relief as the new coke battled it out with the old coke for consumer popularity. President Reagan had successful cancer surgery and Bill Cosby became a one-man multi media phenomena. It was a year for sports records as Pete Rose broke Ty Cobbs' record of 4.191 hits, the Chicago Bears won Superbowl XX with the heaviest running back. Refrigera tor Perry, and Boris Becker shocked the world by winning the Wimbeldon tennis championship. Scientific advances also took place in 1986 as Halleys Comet visited the earth s atmosphere. Scientists hope Halleys Comet will provide the answers to many questions about the formation of the earth, all those years ago. Most of all. 1986 was a year of great triumph as well as tragedy. The summit in Geneva between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachov was the first step in the direction of world peace while the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger left millions of people around the world in shock and disbelief. 1986 will always be remembered not simply because it was our Senior year, but it will also be remembered because of the various world events which helped to make 1986 a very special year. The hittor ural Live-Aid Concert conducted in Philadelphia raised a tremendous amount ol money lor the needy m ilhio P President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorba chov meet in Geneva for a Summit discussing world peace. 166 Flashback FLASHBACKS We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith. Pick Scobee. Judith Resnik. Ronald McNair. Ellison Onizuka. Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe. They had that special grace, that special spirit that says gjVe mc 3 challenge and I'll meet it with joy. We will never forget them or the last time we saw them ... as they waved goodbye and slipped the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God. We looked up to those students who had almost completed high school, those that had first perference whether it was distribution of lockers or assigned seats in assembly. Well, as those Seniors graduated and others took their place, we become involved in many activities and formed many new friendships. Soon, we were too busy to envy and admire those Seniors who would graduate in June, but the thought of becoming Seniors was always in our minds, buried deep underneath the homework assignments and book reports. As we continued through high school, we created many new memories and friendships that would make our years at East Side so very worthwhile. As Senior year finally became our year, we realized that there was hardly a difference from being a Junior or a Senior. When we look back on our Senior year, we will remember the exciting and fun-filled times that we spent together. The times spent at our lockers, making us late for class, the times in the cafeteria when we relaxed and shared moments with laughter. As we graduate, we will be entering a new world. The world of college campuses' and lecture halls as well as offices and boardrooms. We will become part of a new life, sadly leaving our old one behind. However, the four years spent at East Side, the new friends and different experiences, will always be a part of our lives and as we emerge into our new world, we will always remember our four spark- 1 ling years spent at East Side.
