The math department with its friendly and very competent teachers make any type of math class more than just mere lines and angles. These courses trigger our interest and knowledge of numbers and their importance in our ever changing world. We learn how digits can come together to solve questions and help formulate new ideas. Whether math majors or not. we can not forget Mrs. Salagaj's Algebra classes and her ability in making numbers come alive or the interesting discussions on angles in Mr. Trimarco's Geometry class and the sleepless nights doing homework for Mrs. DiPiazza's period 3 CalculuSi these will always stand out in our minds as interesting and challenging experiences. For those who wish to mix chemicals and experiment with different formulas the physics and chemistry labs offer much opportunity. Remember the day we had to disect the frog in Ms. Gonnelli's Biology class, one true scientist” would do the operation while friends held their noses and squirmed? In physics lab we share the work and carefully boil the water to the correct temperature to complete experiment 36. Mr. King's favorite, and we listen with interest as Mr. Andraous lectures on Newton's laws and the nature of acceleration. In our math and science classes we are given the chance to become a mad scientist, research assistant, chemical engineer, and computer analyst even if it is only for a short 45 minutes each day. There are certain times in our lives when we wish to develop our talents and we begin to explore the available options which will enable us to do so. For those of us who are artistically talented, we find enjoyment in the various art classes. There, we are able, with the help of our teachers, to express our unique skills and develop our abilities. We may enter our drawings and paintings in contests, such as the Newark Brotherhood Poster Contest. Newark Project Pride, and Newark Teen Arts. In our English classes, we are given the opportunity to explore a different world • that of literature and creative writing. Through reading books by such famous authors as John Steinbeck. Arthur Miller. Ernest Hemingway, and William Shakespeare, we are able to broaden our views and ideas on different sublets. In addition, our English classes help us to improve our writing skills. This becomes useful when we decide to express our thoughts and opinions by participating in essay contests like the V.F.W.'s Voice of Democracy, the Newark Brotherhood writing competl tion. and the Optimist Oratorical Contest. It is without a doubt that these classes play an important part in our high school life. Note , note and more note M - Academic Art tngli«h Ac d«mic Art English — 2J Wednesday Is ... The boys will most likely go outside to the park to run. so we can have the use of the entire gym. The class will split into four teams. Our team will serve first today. We are going to have a test on chapter eight of the Driver's Manual. We will have to take our notes home to study. Everyone is anxious to obtain their driver's license, so they study hard to pass the test in health class. As the final exam, we will be given the standard driver's test consisting of 50 questions. We have to pass this test in order to receive our permit. After this, we will be able to take our driving test to get our license. To prepare ourselves, we are reviewing the specific areas that will appear on the exam. Rosangela Costa and Dina Furfaro have already received their license, but most of us are waiting ... patiently. The gym classes provide us a time for recreation as well as for physical fitness. Maybe that is why the classes always seem to go by quickly. The driver's education classes, on the other hand have been a great help for everyone hoping to obtain a license. Besides providing us with the knowledge needed to get our license, we are able to receive a lower rate of insurance by taking this course. Well, here we are at the gym. The football team with all its spirit and determination ended their season with a record of 3-6. An accomplishment that took much hard work and practice. Our defense performed exceptionally well and our offensive line proved to be stronger than ever. Throughout the season, our team almost tasted victory. As in the case of the Vailsburg game when we lost 0-2 on a safety. Who can forget the thrilling Jamesburg game when we came so close to defeating them. The score was 15-20. Jamesburg led. It 's the second down and the ball is on the one yard line. Suddenly the time ran out and East Side faced a loss. They never gave up. The next week they came out more determined than ever: ready to bring victory to East Side as they defeated West Side, for the second consecutive year, with a score of 24-8. Two weeks later, they grasped another victory. This time against Barringer whom East Side had not beaten in eleven years. Who are these athletes who exemplify so much dedication, enthusiasm, desire and hard work? The team was headed by several seniors such as Michael Lalley who's skill has led to the success of this season. Chester Williams, a four year veteran, played better than ever while John Marques proved a tough obstacle to the opposing team. This season was extraordinary; old boundaries were broken and new recorders were set. Under the watchful eye of Coach Dickerson, the team strived for constant improvement and consequently obtained it. Their season consisted of 22 meets during which they won numerous events and titles. Their times for the boys and girls mile relays, distance medleys, and two-mile relays were the best Cast Side has experienced during the previous ten years. Senior Jose Barros experienced a thrilling year as he captured the Group IV 800 meter State Champ Title. Mis time of 1:55 placed him in the top performers list of 1985. Jose, who has been a member of the Track-Team, for four years, says that running is his love and it is worth all the pain and hard work. Another outstanding achievement was made when the Boys Mile Relay placed 3rd in the Group IV Championship as well. The glory of victory does not only belong with the boys teams. Rosa Domigues made sure of this as she captured the group IV two-mile State Champ title with her time of 11:17, a new Cast Side record. The success does not end there as the Girls Two Mile Relay, consisting of Rosa Domingues, Lina Bcirao. Ana Cravo and anchor person Annie Resende, ranked 3rd in Mew Jersey. This boys and girls team is made up of one victory after another. Cvery individual however has endured much pain, hard work and frustration to achieve such a tremendous season. The glory is theirs for they have earned it. As Coach Dickerson often tells his teams. Not only are they the administrators of our school but they are also our friends, who are always there when we need their assistance and guidance. By being responsive to our needs, they have continuously worked with us for an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Mrs. Cardiellos our Principal for two and a half years has been promoted to Assistant Executive Superintendent in charge of Instructional Services. She is a dedicated educator and we wish her continued success. The Senior class congratulates Mr. Robert Wujciak, former Drug Coordinator and Vice-Principal at bast Side, who has now become Acting-Principal. We wish him luck and know he will continue to work with faculty, class officers, student council and community members in order to continue improvements and make East Side a better place for all. In this endeavor he is often assisted bv the Vice-Principals who play a very important role in helping to establish school rules and regulations. Mr. Martin one of our Vice-Principals has developed an effective fire drill procedure and has also worked with the students to organize the first Senior Citizen Luncheon so that we can enjoy and share the company of older members in our community. Department Chairpersons in our school have kept all of the academic departments well organized. This has helped each student have access to a fine learning environment. We, the class of 1985, have relied on the A-team for good judgement, guidance and direction and because of this we all have prospered and become one of the best schools in the district. We welcome at this time the following new members of the A-team, Mrs. Outor, Mr. Machado, and Mr. Moselle. We wish them well and know they will do their very best at East Side. We have found that in attending art class, we have been given the opportunity to develop our ideas into creative expressions. We have worked on still life drawings, watercolor paintings, pastel portraits, taken photographs of our community, made photograms and developed a photo-essay all under the direction of our dedicated art teachers. In our music department the chorus and Choir J perform under the direction of Mrs. Glover. Their various concerts at Christmas and other times during the year always give pleasure. Our band, under musical director Mr. Cleveland, participates with pride and enthusiasm at football games, pep rallies, parades and various community activities. In the music foundations classes, we have learned to read music symbols as well as develop an appreciation for various types of music. In addition, students with both interest and ability have been given the chance to develop skills with string instruments, through the instruction of Mr. Sutera. This guidance, direction and exposure has all contributed in developing the great sounds that make up the East Side spirit. Many students at East Side come from various foreign countries and therefore have difficulty in adjusting to high school life because of a language barrier. The Bilingual teachers realize how troublesome ordinary homework assignments can be for these students when there is not a complete understanding of the language. Therefore, teachers like Mr. Barroqueiro assist these students by providing an enjoyable learning environment which makes them eager to participate in the various classroom activities. Mrs. Altaribba believes that with time and patience the students can quickly learn the English language. With this in mind, she allows them to work at an easy, comfortable pace. With the help of the Bilingual teachers, the students find little difficulty in learning English. As they gradually begin to master the language, the students discover that through hard work and with the proper guidance, learning English can be fun. One of the classes offered is typing, where we are given the use of either manual or electric typewriters. This posed a minor problem for students like Roberta Arcoleo, who had to cut her long, pretty nails in order to use the typewriter properly. Under the direction of our teachers we are taught how to become touch typists, a term which simply means that we are able to type without using our eyes as guides to the keyboard. Ms. Weeks stresses the importance of touch tvping in completing our work quickly and efficiently by reprimanding us with a gentle tap of a ruler on our fingers if we are caught sneaking a glance at the keyboard. In our steno classes, we are taught to form small, simple notes out of long, complicated sentences by using symbols in plat e of letters and words. To those who do not understand it, steno appears to be a foreign language, students like Norma Ribeiro may often be seen doing some important steno homework which an unknowing individual may interpret as a mixture of abstract symbols. Another class which benefits us greatly if we wish to become a part of the business world is bookkeeping, in which we are taught how to record the accounts and transactions of a business. In these classes we learn the importance of valid and accurate records in maintaining a good business. Our Business teachers never fail to teach us that through hard work, many new and challenging skills can gradually be acquired. With their help, we may enter the business world with skill and confidence. M . Taffet: M.A., Busmen M . The English teachers have helped us to better understand and appreciate our unique language. Under their guidance, we have witnessed our vocabulary steadily increase, and we have learned how to properly apply the more difficult new words into our writings in order to create clear, well-expressed reports and essays. We have entered some of our writings in the various essay contests such as the V.F.W. Voice of Democracy, the Newark Brotherhood Essay, and the Optimist Club Oratorical. The authors of the winning essays were awarded money, plaques, and trophies. We are also given the opportunity to express our ideas and talents, as well as our creativity in designing costumes and sets at the Medieval Festival, which is given annually by Mrs. Matarazzo's English IV Honors and College Preparatory classes. The festival allows us to become acquainted with Medieval customs and lifestyles, and most importantly, with the literature of that period in time. By reading Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, students gain an awareness and understanding of life in the Middle Ages. Our English teachers have made learning enjoyable by comparing and discussing, in detail, the many ideas in the writings of literary greats such as William Shakespeare, John Steinbeck, and George Orwell. Their interpretations of many of the classics written by these prominent authors have given us a deep appreciation of both English and American literature. In addition to teaching us the importance of such valuable works of literature, our English teachers have guided us in strengthening our skills in vocabulary, analogies, and antonyms, three areas where we are tested in the Scholastic Aptitude Test, which all Seniors who plan to attend college must take. Hopefully, with the assistance of our English teachers, we are now prepared to face the outside world with lucid expression, dignity, and confidence. Mr. Burnt: B.A., English Mt. Nothing can compare to the advice and assistance that they arc always ready to give. They have helped us to grow and become responsible adults able to meet any challenges that we may face. With their help we have gained a deeper awareness of ourselves and others. It is a combination of both hard work and caring that describes our counselors at East Side. They never fail to help us in filling out college and financial aid applications, in addition to giving us much useful information needed in selecting the right college. Our counselors organized trips to colleges such as Essex County and Rutgers, where we were given the opportunity to examine the educational programs offered at these schools. We wish to thank Miss Seawell and Mr. Sambur, our Senior Class counselors, who have given us advice in selecting the classes best suited to our career interests, and who have assisted us in preparing our plans for the future. They have taught us to achieve and to follow our dreams. In addition to the advice and guidance given by our counselors we are given the chance to develop new horizons through the Foreign Languages offered at East Side. The correct manner in which to speak and pronounce the words of another language is what we are taught in our Foreign Language classes. We are also taught how to think and express our feelings and ideas in this new language that is so different from our own. Teachers in this department take special care to make sure that we understand the language, as well as the interesting history behind it. Our Foreign Language classes also offer us the opportunity to experience the unique cultures of various countries by allowing us to participate in East Side's International Night, which is organized by the members of our Foreign Language Department. At this enjoyable and interesting event, we are encouraged to bring an array of International Dishes for everyone to sample, and we may choreograph dance routines from different countries. This way, we not only learn a foreign language, but also the ideas and cultures of the people who speak the language in that particular country. Mr . Cavanagh: M.A., Guidance Mr . We may also take Electronics I and II, which gives us the necessary materials and information needed for future study. In the Auto and Wood Shops, we learn the techniques of fixing cars and how to work with various woods in the production of such objects as tables, chairs, shelves and cabinets. Another area which offers much useful as well as practical information and experiences is Home Economics. Getting involved with these classes has provided a valuable experience in the preparation of foods from the simplest dish to the most advanced. Dulce DaSilva a senior, can still recall those burnt chocolate chip cookies. For those of us who enjoy sewing, classes are given in how to select materials and make our own clothes. Stella Ho, also a senior, can recall with some laughter the making of a sport outfit, and what a challenge it was to cut and sew the pattern. To lesson the stress after classes, boost our energy, and keep us physically fit, our physical education teachers allow us to participate in a broad range kof athletic sports and activities, such as weightlifting, softball, tsketball, and running. In addition to keeping us physically fit, these livities teach us the importance of team participation. Throughout the fall and winter seasons, sports must be played indoors, in the gymnasiums. However, once the weather permits, we are led outdoors to Independence Park, where we may soak up sunshine and fresh air while participating in a sport or activity. In the park, teachers like Ms. Brown, Mr. Blasi, and Mr. Banais test our speed in such areas as the 50 yard dash and long-distance running. In our health classes, we are taught the basic functions of the human body and how smoking and alcohol can endanger our lives. Our health teachers guide us in learning C.P.R. and first aid so that in the event of an accident, we will know how to care for our lives or the life of another. Although the driver education classes at East Side offer no practical driving experience, they give us the written theory, which has proven extremely important to those of us who have received our licenses and are now drivers. With the assistance of our driver education teachers such as Ms. Werner and Mr. W'atson, we were taught the importance of traffic signals, weather conditions when driving, and the dangerous effects that alcohol and drugs can have on a driver. Our Science Department consists ot teachers who do their best to help us understand the complicated formulas and laws which constitute the basic foundations of science In biology we arc taught about the complicated structures of various creatures, both terrestrial and aquatic Through the efforts of Ms. Connelli, some of the Scieru e classes are able to study those life forms by taking field trips to Sandy Hook, New Jersey. While walking along the shore, we pit k up various shells and sea life for examination and discussion. We also examine horseshoe crabs, and are taught that they are non-poisonous. Our student photographer. Pedro Sousa, captures and records the various activities and special moments experienced on these trips. Such trips, along with experiments and lab work help us to understand the importance of Science in our daily lives. In addition to being able to study Science our social studies teachers have kept us abreast with current events, as well as fascinated us with stories of the past. With the help of our teachers we learn how civilizations develop and how many individuals shaped entire nations We discover how much can be accomplished when people unite, and how wars have affected the progress of society. In Christian O'Neill's history classes we are given the opportunity to experience presidential debates and campaigns through role playing, in which wc act out the parts of important historical figures. Mr. Chill's classes always become more challenging when he allows us to try our hand at various brain leasers. These puzzles, which promote thought and careful deduction, often leave us perplexed, but eager to discover a solution. In addition to helping us understand people and events from the past, our teachers have also given us the opportunity to learn about ourselves and the society in which we live especially through our psychology and sociology classes, taught by Mr. Chill and Mr. Zenga. With their help we have gained an understanding of certain aspects of our personalities and wc have learned about various significant roles our society upholds. We have also discovered the problems that face our society such as crime, poverty, pollution and drugs, and what we, as a united group, can do to help eliminate these problems in order to make today and tomorrow a better place. We know that whether we are working on a special book report or doing extensive research on term paper our librarians, Mrs. Gipson, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Rosenbaum are always there to help us. Our special education teachers work with each student on an individual basis in order to develop their strong points. These teachers have given many students extra assistance and help. This year our special education department welcomes the addition of two new faculty members, Mr. D’Andrea and Ms. Mouzon. We know they will only serve to enhance this special department. Dr. Lindgren and Mr. Mascatiello our Chapter I coordinators, give special help on an individual basis to students in the subject areas of reading and math. This help is most welcomed by all the students involved. In the area of speech pathology we find Mr. Grant, our speech therapist, who helps students develop their speech in a clear and correct manner, through the use of various exercise methods in sounds. Problems, problems, problems, can always be discussed with Ms. Rodriguez, social worker who helps counsel students whenever needed. Mr. Jack and Mr. McCormack our two attendance counselors work together for the continued improvement of attendance at East Side. They can always be found checking records and making important calls. A lot of good people, working together. If ever the term )ack of-all tradcs applies, it applies to our secretaries. They are the key people to whom everyone comes for information. Students ask them everything. Parents phone constantly. Teachers ask about all kinds of rules and records. Our secretaries are very reliable and supportive. The custodians keep the school running. In many ways, the school, with all its different parts, is like a big machine, and the custodians must know everything about running it. Operating the boilers that keep the school warm requires special training and a special state license. Who cleans up after all those messy lunch periods? Who picks up fallen posters? Who fixes a broken window? The custodial staff. Mr. Roberts, our chef, believes in service with a smile. He, along with his staff always try to satisfy both student and faculty. They make sure everyone gets a balanced and nutritious meal. The security guards offer protection, direction, and assistance. They reduce vandalism, remove the threat of violence, or sometimes simply ease occasional anxiety. They are always a welcome sight. An enthusiastic group of spectators looked on as the volleyball swayed back and forth over the net. The faculty was well represented by the following teachers: Mr. Molinaro, Ms. Scvidis, Ms. Rodriguez, Mrs. Pellerito and Ms. Werner, however their expertise was not to be compared to that of the students. Although the faculty tried hard to defeat their opponents, top notch players such as John Krug, Charlie De Almeida, Sergio Dos Santos, Diane Lemos, Elizabeth Gomes and Alex Franco were always one step ahead. The final turn-out proved that the students were undefeated three games straight. The winning team was presented with a trophy by Mr. Martin and the afternoon came to a close as teachers and students both exited smiling and sharing a friendship known to all East Siders. % Faculty Game Faculty Game 97 An Olympic moment foe Fait Side. Various trips were taken to such places as New York City where they enjoyed the United Nations and immigration offices along with Chinatown which always has an interesting mix of cultures. One of the more important aspects of this program was to give these scholars the experience of college life . They were given independence and freedom long associated with college, along with various responsibilities. The Governor's School left many pleasurable memories in the minds of these seniors. Under the steady guidance of Coach Dicker-son, these seniors have won several titles. Both Jose and Frank have been City Champions and County Champions three times. State Sectional Champions twice, and State Group Four Champions in the VS mile meet. Lina has earned the titles of City Champion, County Champion, State Sectional and State Group Four Champion as well. The running careers that these talented athletes have developed at East Side will not end after graduation. Frank, Lina and Jose plan to continue keeping stride at Montclair Stale, Glassboro State and Georgetown University. This is certainly not the case with Jorge Fernandez and Terri Ortiz. These seniors have shown their capabilities time and time again by joining the various essay contests and by receiving recognition for doing so. Terri submitted her writings to the V.F.W. contest and in her senior year placed third in the contest. The subject of her essay was My Pledge to America where she spoke about the responsibilities and obligations of her and her peers toward America and its future. Jorge proved his ability to write first in his sophomore year by entering the Optimist contest and placing third. The essay's topic was Youth, America's Strength ; he told how we, the younger generation, will inherit the world's many responsibilities and that we must begin preparing for this now. Then, in his junior year, he entered the Optimist contest again and came in second place, the topic Serve With Pride . Me spoke about the various things in which one can be proud of, for instance, serving your country by joining the armed forces. Both Jorge and Terri write as a hobby and enjoy the feeling of being creative. By voicing their opinions through the various essay contests, they have definitely proved that the pen is mightier than the sword. Along with those positions she is also secretary for the National Honor Society. After school, Fernanda has also held a part-time job in a local food store. Of all her activities however, Fernanda finds her participation in the Annual Medieval Festival one of her favorites. Participants In Government On December 5th and 6th, in Trenton, New lersey, four seniors became active participants in government. Nilda Dominguez, Diane lemos, Mario Santos, and lee Brown took part in New Jersey Close Up”. The purpose of this program is to stimulate the interests of high school students to learn more about state government on a first hand basis. During these days, seminars were held in which these seniors expressed their views on many controversial issues. Among the topics for discussion were abortion, ERA, and the rights of non-smokers. Various opinions were presented and several arguments were heard; many were given the opportunity to speak out for or against these topics. Also, on the agenda was a tour of the government buildings. They visited the State House, where they sat in the Assembly Chambers and observed the legislature in action; they journeyed to the Justice Complex and met with several judges who explained the complex judicial process and answered questions. They then went on to visit the State House Annex where they listened to the Public Advocate speak about various laws affecting all citizens. Nilda, Diane, Mario, and Lee felt that they indeed had learned about the inner workings of state government from this exciting experience. When asked if the program was informative for them, Diane Lemos said, It was an experience well worth our time and effort . 110 Senior MARIA DE OllVEIRA Purple Rain; you're my Everythin Hello, friend H 0 torOUY M LISA DE VINO Grrmlim. Skating To Victory One of the most successful sports at East Side is the hockey team. There are several seniors on the team this year but all the players have had a hand in making the team one which we can all be very proud of. The seniors are Eddie Borger, captain. Anthony Tonzola, Michael Lalley, Peter Wilczek, Alex Franco, Chris Ihlings, and Eddie De Carmo. Borger and Tonzola have participated in the hockey program since their freshman year and Lalley and Wilczek since their sophomore year. Two of these seniors are among the top ten leading scorers in the state; Tonzola is in seventh place and Lalley is in fifth. The team's record for this year was 11-2-2. One of the highlights of the season was the championship game against their biggest rival - St. Peters, which by winning four to two gained them the title of American Conference Division Champions. Overall, the team had an exceptional year because of the talented players along with a lot of hard work and cooperation from everyone involved with this popular sport. Letters of Importance ll is my pleasure to inform you that you have been granted admission to our college beginning with the Fall 1985 term .. With these words comes a wonderful feeling of relief as well as importance. Those seniors, who received this letter can now make additional plans for the future. Many East Siders send out applications at the beginning of senior year, and hope for a reply in the Spring. Some students however, refuse to be put through a long wait so they apply in junior year for early admission, hoping to be informed during first term of Senior year. Michael Marra, is one such East Sider who applied under the early admissions program to Boston University and was informed of his acceptance by December. Other students who have taken advantage of this opportunity are Maria Gucrreiro, accepted to Johnson and Wales, Patricia Luna, Hood College, Tony Moreira, DeVry Institute and Natalie Ruela, Rutgers University. This sense of relief, which is brought about through early admission was best summed up by Patricia Luna when she said, I feel that I have achieved something important, and I can now direct my attention and energies towards other goals. The bathroom party ! friend Senior 115 Repairs, Repairs, Repairs A! the beginning of our senior year, we received the news that our auditorium would be closed to us in order to undergo construction, due to safety hazards which were discovered when parts of the ceiling began to fall. At once, the auditorium was proclaimed off-limits, and a construction crew was brought in to repair the dangerous ceiling. The construction process took several months and throughout this time, workers could be seen carrying such materials as wood and metal planks in and out of this area. Soon, it became a busy place, crowded with people trying to accomplish an important task quickly and efficiently. Assemblies could no longer be held there, so the cafeteria was put to use for that particular purpose. Many of us agreed that it was not as comfortable as the more spacious auditorium. After a few assemblies in the cafeteria, an important question came to many of the seniors' minds: could graduation be held in the auditorium? The answer to that question depended upon whether the work could be finished in time for June graduation. Fortunately, in January, work was completed and the auditorium was once again open to assemblies and meetings. If all goes as expected, the East Side auditorium will once again serve as the place for graduation ceremonies. GLORIA GOMEZ MAVRA GOMEZ FERNANDO GOV Porky' I and II; Glamorou He. Breaku.. A Torture. In addition, she keeps busy after school with her job as a receptionist in a travel agency. After graduation, Celina plans to attend college and obtain a degree in psychology, a goal which she will easily attain due to her scholastic ability and determination. Coming in at number seven is Jose Cardoso, a student who holds an active interest in mathematics. He has shown both interest and ability by helping to establish class rankings as a Computer Club member. Jose keeps active in our school government through his position as Senior Class Representative. Like many students, he maintains a job at his father's auto body shop after school. Particular classrooms may stand out in our minds because of good learning experiences, but our special memories will be those where we met most often with our friends and experience the best times of the day. These areas of the school are referred to with affection as hangouts”. They are the designated areas where day after day a group of students can be seen standing, talking, joking and laughing. The site of a particular hangout depends upon the students using it. Some prefer a certain stairway in building B, others would rather hang out on the third floor in building A, and still others prefer certain bathrooms in A, B, and C buildings. The most frequently occupied hangouts however, are the lockers, where the majority of East Siders usually meet with friends. Although many factors constitute memorable aspects of high school life, for many of us none can compare to the minutes spent at our favorite area. For us, one of the hardest aspects about leaving East Side will be losing the security and friendship of our special hangouts. CRISCEL MALDONADO TAMMY MARCIANO The Wall. Sweet I Ml. Pimm . Senior 123 Different Aspects of Government Toward the end of junior year, four top students received the privilege of attending a special program at Rider College, entitled New Jersey Boys State . Tony Rodrigues, Ted Silva, Tony Caetano, and John Caamano spent an enjoyable week at the college, during which time they attended various classes and meetings to learn about the different aspects of state government. These East Siders were given the opportunity to meet students from other high schools throughout the state, and to attend pep rallies and such sporting events as football, tennis, and volleyball. They also visaed various sections of the college grounds, and were surprised to find a large, peaceful lake directly on campus. Although they enjoyed these various forms of recreation, much of their time was spent in the classroom, studying how government operates, mass transit systems, and civil service procedures. They attended meetings in which they listened to speeches given by several candidates whom they were to elect as officers. These meetings, or caucuses made the students aware of the voting procedures in state government. In addition, this experience provided the opportunity to divide into two parties, the Nationalists and Federalists, whose purpose was the election of a Governor for Boys State. Although they were required to study and w'ork hard throughout the week, when asked, about this opportunity, Tony Rodrigues replied, It was great fun. We got the chance to meet people and learn many interesting aspects about government. Those big, red and blue compartments in Buildings A and B, which we received individually in our junior year, are so unlike the more narrow ones in Building C which we had to share during our first two years at East Side. Upon receiving the larger lockers, many of us realized that it was more fun to share this new space than to use it alone. So, instead of one coat or jacket, many contain two or three, and instead of one particular type of decor, various kinds are blended together to form a unique style. As anyone can tell by walking down the hallways between classes, no two are exactly alike. Our lockers are the one place at East Side where we may fully express our personalities without anyone telling us to remove or add a thing. In addition, they sometimes serve as an excuse for being late to class. What teacher hasn't heard the worn-out line, I was at my locker”. In order to appear more convincing, we go on to explain that we were getting necessary material for that particular class. We will remember our lockers as the places where we met with friends, stored secrets, and exchanged ideas. As we prepare to leave East Side in June, we will not only take those mirrors, pictures and posters from our lockers, but many happy memories as well. friend Dynamic Duo Since freshman year, both Diane lemos and Natalie Ruela have strived to develop their scholastic ability, and now in senior year, they have been rewarded by receiving the distinction of being named salutatorian and valedictorian. Such honors are well deserved, for much of Dtane's and Natalie's time throughout their years at East Side, have been devoted to their studies. However, that is not to say, that all their time has been spent on school work. Natalie has shown an interest in various extra curricular activities such as the Dungeons and Dragons club. East Side's softball team, as well as finding time to be typing editor of the 1985 Torch, and Treasurer of the National Honor Society. Diane on the other hand has participated in the French club. National Honor Society, Colorguards, school newspaper and is coeditor of the Senior Section of the '85 Yearbook. Both Natalie and Diane, plan to attend college and pursue careers in Bio-Cheinistry and Pharmacy. East Side has been fortunate to have Michael Lalley who has excelled in three sports. Michael has been a member of the baseball team, where he earned a letter with his gold game performance as first baseman, and where he demonstrated his expertise in the batter's box. While on the football field, Mike divided his time by playing both middle linebacker and fullback. He helped the team achieve its first success in recent years. Michael's third sport is hockey. As a member of the hockey team, Mike has skated to a C-Division Championship and this year in A-Division, a Hamdchen Cup Championship. He expects to continue his athletic endeavors at Montclair State, where he plans to concentrate on football and perfect his skills as a middle linebacker. For someone who has already proven exceptional athletic abilities, we are confident that Michael will continue to achieve his future goals with style and ease. Improving SAT Skills The SAT as most seniors know, is extremely difficult and requires a great deal of preparation for success. Before a class was offered at East Side, students had to take the class at Rutgers or Seton Hall Universities. But in 1984, East Side instituted a special SAT skills class for interested students, to help prepare them for this rigorous and challenging test. The class offers as a major objective the familiarization of various math and English concepts found on the test. As Casper Cerqueira said, I feel it helps me get to know the material better . Apparently this approach has had success. Mrs. Di Piazza who teaches the math portion and Mr. D'Errico who handles verbal skills, have both cited an increase in the test results. Hopefully this course will continue and help provide other East Siders with the much needed preparation required for good test scores. The cafeteria is the place where it is held. In years past, the cafeteria served a quick lunch, but it now serves as the ideal spot to read, do homework, relax or blow off steam . Books clutter the tables as seniors busily complete their Trig, or Chem. assignments. This special area provides us with an atmosphere that makes us feel more at home. However, most seniors find that the most important purpose of the cafeteria is that it offers a chance to be with friends. Roseangela Costa says, the cafeteria is great. It is where everyone catches up on the latest news.” As freshman and sophomores we had open lunch, which enabled us to leave the building and make individual lunch plans. Junior year brought a change in our routine when closed lunch was put into effect. However by Senior year the cafeteria took on new and delightful experiences. Although it is the object of many jokes, our cafeteria and period 7 lunch especially, fulfills our many and varied needs. Bachelor Yell. This aspiring young student photographer is senior, Pedro Sousa. Pedro has been the yearbook and newspaper photographer lor two years and has also been employed by the Lorstan Photo Studio, where work has been fun and exciting. Photography, however is only one of the many interests Pedro is involved with. At East Side, he has been a member of both Varsity Track and Cross Country teams. He has run in such events as City, County, and State Sectional Championships and because of his over all performance he has been encouraged to continue this sport in college. At present, his career interests lie in the realm of fashion photography and he hopes to pursue this study at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. After a period of freelancing, he plans to have his own photo studio. With determination, hardwork and his ability, it will not be long before Pedro's goals are realized. Both Celso and Fernando have part time jobs, after school and both enjoy sports. Fernando is an avid skier, and member of East Side's Ski Club. Also represented was the United States with performances by the Rock Band playing the latest musical favorites as well as accompaning Danny Jackson who gave his rendition of Lionel Richie's Hello and Billy Idol's ' White Wedding. When we began our freshman year at East side, we immediately started admiring the seniors - those students who had almost completed four full years of high school. All we could do was dream of the time - when we too would take their place. Well, those four years magically became years filled with fun. laughter and merriment. In that period of time, we learned a great deal, got involved in school activities and formed special friendships as well as tried to become more mature and confident young adults. Now we are seniors, and when we look back on our high school days many of us will recall East Side with happy thoughts, because we were beginning the best four years of our lives. Senior year will also be remembered as the year m which we shared new, exciting and fun filled times. experiences and events. Every Doo-Da still rings clear as we recall everyone cheering in the stands at the Hockey games Wno can forget the time spent at the Watchung Reservation and Echo Lake Park where we played football and Daroeques and went canoeing; or the days in May and June when we raided the shores of New Jersey. Nov;, we have before us unlimited opportunities. We are now faced with decisions concerning our lives, career choices and which college will accept us. As we prepare to leave East Side, we will leave behind many important events in our lives — but we will be taking more with us - memories full of laughter — friendships made — moments shared. We depart knowing that whatever life has in store — our four years spent at East Side, have helped prepare and influence how we will deal with those events. AND ANTICIPATION Our President.
